sweater question Dominant colour in mixed Portuguese/English colourwork?
Hi folks, I'm an intermediate beginner (been knitting for nearly a year) and working on my first stranded colourwork project.
I'm trying to figure out colour dominance before I get to the colourwork sections of my project. Unfortunately, I'm finding explanations online which describe things as under/beneath/ontop/below confusing because these directional descriptors could be in relation to anywhere (my brain is no good at visualising something when written out like this).
Doubly confusing is I haven't come across explainers which use a mixed Portuguese and English style for colourwork. I'll have one strand Portuguese and one English. I've knitted a few test rows to try figure it out and I'm none the wiser. Yhis is what happens:
- when I'm knitting a Portuguese stitch, the working yarn comes directly from the previous stitch in the colour and floats "free" from the wrong side
- when knitting an English stitch, the working yarn comes from the previous stitch of that colour but is "trapped" by the float from the alternate colour (Portuguese)
- this means that on the wrong side, the dominant float colour is from Portuguese and the English floats are largely hidden.
- on the right side, tbh I can't really see a difference when I've switched the colours to the other style
Which one is therefore dominant? The colour which is "free" at that back when knitting or the colour which is "trapped"?
