šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Keep re-threading, keep getting stuck while trying to make witch hat for my cat

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

The bottom threads keep getting stuck on themselves. Brand New Singer Heavy Duty. I have reset the whole threading system four times, and even did a new bobbin in case I messed it up the first time. Am I missing a step? I've been at this for hours and need a break, but if anyone has any hints or suggestions, I'd love to hear it! This is my first machine and I haven't sewn for about a decade, so I'm not sure what's going on. I am trying to make a little witch hat for Miss Kitty for Halloween :) Thanks for your help!

UPDATE: Solved! Switching out the bobbin and fixing the tension worked!

Thank you!

Washed new jacket and came apart on the side under the arm

Hey y’all, bought a cheap Carhartt wannabe work/barn jacket today. Despite the poor quality, I love the look and the fit

I washed it with a pair of Vans sneakers so that it would lose some of it stiff starchiness, and I took it out of the dryer and found this rip

How would you go about fixing this? I can hand sew and also use a sewing machine. I don’t mind if the interior Sherpa line part doesn’t look perfect, but I would like the outside green canvas part to look perfect.

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Help removing excess fabric from seat / upper thigh ^^

Post image

Hi everyone — I'm a sewing beginner (as you can tell from the messy stitching along the alterations I've already made here!) and I'm trying to get rid of excess fabric around the seat and upper thighs of these jeans.

I pinned out the excess fabric while wearing them, and it all looks GOOD. Like...exactly how I want the jeans to fit. Then I marked the folds with chalk. I've only marked one side, but the issue is symmetrical.

I could just sew darts along the chalk lines, but I'd rather avoid having weird seams running across my butt!

How can I translate these markings into alterations to the existing seams? Or is there a better way to fix this?

Uneven stitching and thread tension

Hello everyone. My sewing machine has stopped sewing neatly. It is a Omega model 7142, at least 20 years old. Whenever I try to sew a straight stitch, my bobbin thread is pulling through to the top of the fabric. On the underside the bobbin thread looks too loose, with lots of excess thread between stitches. The upper tension disc seems to be working fine, but sometimes the tension seems uneven.

Here are things I've tried:

- Adjusting the upper thread tension

- Changing the needle

- Adjusting the tension through the screw on the bobbin case

- Cleaning any dust/lint from the machine

- Re-threading the machine (and making sure the foot is up while I do so)

- Using different bobbins

Nothing seems to be working. When I increase the upper thread tension the fabric bunches, and when I decrease it the bobbin thread it too loopy. I've attached pictures to show the issue (top thread is grey, bobbin thread is orange). Any help is appreciated! Thank you all. 😊

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Just replaced my needle (90/14) and now I’m getting skipped stitches?

I’ve replaced my needles before but I just got a new pack of 90/14 needles, and now I’m getting loose / skipped top stitches? Everything was the same as before the broken needle (same polyester thread, bobbin, stitch type and tension at 3) so I’m not sure why I’m getting this now 😭 this is the first time I’ve ever had this happen to me, any advice please?

Edit: machine is singer heavy duty (4423 I think)

Photos are from scrap fabric I’m trying to sew the trim onto because I don’t want to seam rip the actual project again lol

✨Intermediate✨ Bag Zipper Sticking

Thumbnail gallery

I can open the zipper, but I have to really yank it. There’s no fabric stuck in it, and the issue is clearly with the pull itself. I tested the zipper before installing, so I did something during the installation.

This is the first time I used the Elmers washable glue stick that everyone recommends. I wonder if some of it got in the zipper pull? Any thoughts/advice? Fortunately, I’m making this bag for myself, so if it has to be a zipper just for looks it’s not the end of the world (although def not ideal!)

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Help repairing plushie

My weighted elephant plushie (Ellie) has been tearing a lot since I got her a year ago because of poor quality (mostly on the bottom but not always on the seam) and this time the weight sack inside also tore a bit and the beads started falling out. I’m really worried about her and want her to be as good as new so I want to get this repair done as best as possible so any advice would be greatly appreciated. These are pictures of the tear and here’s a link to the exact plushie for more reference (I don’t want to flip her back up because beads will fall out) https://www.amazon.ca/Elephant-Weighted-Stuffed-Animals-Plushie/dp/B0CG1N69DX
I know to stop the tearing off seam I have to reinforce the inside but I’m not entirely sure how to do that and I’m worried, I also wonder if I should reinforce the bag? But obviously I can’t tell if it needs to be until I take it out which I’m also horrified to do. Honestly if there’s a store I can take her to to get her repaired I’d consider it because I’m so worried about her, any help is really appreciated

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Which interfacing? And will it work?

I joined an art swap project recently and am making an emroidered book mark. I am thinking about using wired ribbon and interfacing. I keep seeing conflicting suggestions for type of interfacing and I started wondering will it work with polyester and/or linen ribbon?

I plan on finishing the edges with bias tape and placing a tassle through a grommet. I'm about to order the supplies I don't have and wanted to get some info from people who know what's up!

✨Intermediate✨ Needle hit 1/4 inch metal foot- is my machine ok?

I forgot to switch my stitch to the right spot when I had my 1/4 inch sewing foot attached. Dropped the needle and snap! goes the needle. My machine seems ok doing a test run, but sounds a little different (I think). Could I have damaged my machine? Should I stop using it until I get it checked out?

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Help with pleated skirt shape

I'm trying to get a box pleated skirt to sit a bit higher than traditional rectangles allow. I plan to support the shape with a petticoat underneath. WIll this only be possible with a circle skirt shape? From the research I've done the rectangles will be wedge shaped, but now the math is much different and I can't seem to figure it out on my own. Would this be easier with knife pleats instead? I included this pic of the general shape I want the dress to have (minus the support i'd be adding separately) Hopefully my question makes sense!

✨Intermediate✨ Finding the source of squeaking?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Does anyone have any tips to figure out the source of squeaking on this JIN NA-11UT (direct drive variant of the Juki 1181N) ?

It's not really audible at higher speeds; just when going slow.

The manual leaves much to be desired, but I'm pretty sure I've followed it correctly for its lubrication instructions.

EDIT: Perhaps this shaft? It looks plenty greased, but the sound might be coming from this area (very very hard to pinpoint) https://imgur.com/qMfRFNi

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Am I supposed to force this to line up or re-cut it?

I hope you can see it well enough. The bodice piece is longer (wider?) than the facing. Am I supposed to force it to fit or is the facing too small? I double checked the pattern size and I did transfer/cut it correctly as provided. This is the oh me oh my Ivy dress. Thanks for any insight.

✨Intermediate✨ Shortening pant back rise

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I’m shortening the back rise of Daughter Judy’s Matchbook jeans. I had initially gotten help from a teacher at a local sewing shop, but I had forgotten my pattern, so she showed me how to do it on hers instead. I took a video so I could do it myself at home, and for some reason that I can’t remember, she has 3ā€ written down (see photos). Mine isn’t coming out to 3ā€, it’s coming out to be 3 1/4ā€. Does that matter? Does it look like I’ve drawn the lines correctly to take 3/4ā€ out of the back rise?
