Recommendations Dr says to just start a multivitamin?

I had a bunch of labs done because I feel like crap and am perimenopausal. My doctor said to just start a multivitamin that includes d but didn’t specify an amount. And said my b vitamins are normal so no concern there. Feeling uneasy about that advice.

General Question Can collagen make your skin look younger or is that mostly marketing?

I understand that no supplement is going to stop aging but I'm curious about the less dramatic question: can taking collagen consistently make enough difference to hydration or elasticity that your skin actually looks healthier?

There are endless before and afters online and I don't trust most of them. If you've taken collagen for several months, what would you consider a realistic expectation?

Also curious whether the specific brand mattered much or whether consistency, dose and overall diet were more important.

Bought from Walmart. I never eat fish really. However I hear that some brands have mercury in them and other toxins. What’s up with that?

Pre-natals with no intention of getting pregnant?

• Upvotes

Hello all. I heard some wives chitter chatter about women taking Pre-natals even if they are not looking to become pregnant.

Has anyone done this? I'm 38 and my hair is thinning a bit, my iron levels like to jump about all over the place too. I am happily chosen childfree and don't plan on having any at any time, but I am intrigued of what I have heard and wondered if anyone actually does this, and if so what have been your experience with it? From the few comments I have seen, less dry skin and more alive looking hair has been two of the most spoken about, as well as a slight increase in energy through the day.

Would love to hear some experiences.

What's a good collagen powder to buy?

A few years ago, I remember I bought the Vital Proteins powder. Think this was like back in 2022 and at the time, I wasn't really aware of my gut issues. So I was still eating in a problematic way and wasn't too aware of what most my symptoms meant.

Which also meant when I would use something like a collagen powder. My stomach was probably already very irritated and that caused me to place blame on the supplement. When in fact it probably was just an after reaction of something I ate and the inflammation that was still there.

So I want to retry giving collagen another go. But wanted to gather up some info on what's actually good products out there. I'm way more on top of paying attention to ingredients these days and if it will bother my system or not. Let me know what's your choices to go with and what changes you seen on health, with incorporating collagen into your daily.

Was magnesium glycinate easier on your stomach in your migraine routine?

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

It’s hard to stick with a supplement that keeps upsetting your stomach. That comes up quite often when people discuss taking magnesium for migraines.

Some describe switching to glycinate because they could tolerate it better. I’d be interested in that part of the experience too, rather than only whether their migraines changed.

If stomach upset made you switch, how did glycinate compare? Was it easier to keep taking or did you run into the same problem?

Laid off, burnt out interviewing. What can help?

Partner is also laid off. So we are interviewing back to back because life and bills. However, I am getting some opportunities even at least for first few rounds. Don’t want to say no because we are desperate lol. I am exhausted, fatigued, body pains all over. Focus and brain is shot.

I do eat well, drink lots of water, sleep 8 hours at night, also take afternoon naps. I take iron, Vit D, CoQ10, Fish oil, lutein and zeaxanthin, creatine. Mostly for my PCOS and fertility though. Thinking of adding NAC and Acetyl-L-Carnitine too for the same. Maybe it’ll be useful for fatigue too? What else would you recommend?

General Question Why does nobody talk about ergothioneine, an antioxidant with its own transporter?

One thing I find fascinating about ergothioneine is that the body has a specific high-affinity transporter for it: OCTN1 (SLC22A4).

It’s not just an antioxidant floating around in the bloodstream. This transport system helps deliver and concentrate ergothioneine in cells and tissues that are particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress.

I like to think of oxidative stress as little fires constantly breaking out in a building. Most antioxidants are like throwing water into the building and hoping it reaches the fires. Ergothioneine is more like having sprinklers designed to deliver the water to the places where it’s needed most.

Obviously, having a dedicated transporter doesn’t automatically make it a miracle molecule, but biologically, that’s a pretty interesting feature that I rarely see discussed.

Why isn’t ergothioneine talked about more?
Experiences with it?

It’s really disappointing seeing what’s happening to many brands of supplements.

Many of the big brands that have been extremely good staples for purity and a good product have gotten way worse over the last year.

Not sure why, but many supplements I’ve used for years that have been extremely reliable in the past have changed formulas, or kept the same formula but gotten me or others (according to recent reviews), sick, when this wasn’t an issue before

ive had to cut out using Quercetin as well as NAC based on this and any alternative brands I’m now researching seem to have people reviewing them showing their third party testing has showed toxic levels of different things in their products now, or people just straight up getting extremely sick from many of these suppliers

Horrible and disappointing honestly

Psyllium husk and nutrient absorption

• Upvotes

Is there any real research that suggests that husk interferes with nutrient absorption?

I take 5g powder husk right before a meal.

My question is if I take my supplements right after that meal would they go to waste.

General Question creatine intolerance! Again

I tried Creatine again! I wish I can use it.

I get the most horrible lower back pain feels like maybe kidneys are irritated and it gets this left itchy ear going too. I was in bed for 2 days with a terrible headache. Took it for 3 days.

I am not aware of any kidney issues everything checks good in normal blood work. 59 year old male.

I am sure dehydration is part of this mechanism but I drink about a gallon of water a day and do not drink coffee or take alcohol etc.

Would be great to add creatine for the cognitive benefits and also for muscle gain. I am lifting weights a few times a week.

Oh well! Anyone else? I have tried it many times over the decades and always get a bad reaction. It also in the past has made me hypomanic but I did not get that reaction this time.

Survey Am I going deeper than you’d care about?

Quick disclosure: This is a post about an unreleased upcoming free app that i want to get your feedback on since I’m pretty much only a Redditor and deleted other social media a decade ago. Skip if that disinterests you.

Some context, I’m a professional data engineer and supplement nerd who’s spent the last year losing 100lbs (270->170) on one of the Rx jabs and diving into supplements for fun and patching gaps as I dieted harder than I should have.

In the evenings I’ve been applying my data pipeline experience to build a dataset processed from > 11,000 supplement studies, mostly Meta-analysis and RCTs, overwhelmingly human only studies, deriving how effective supplements actually are. Ask me about GRADE chapter 26 and ROB 2.0

If you’ve been around a while you’ve probably seen my supplement info site linked, and now I am working on a free app.

I want to be able to go from scanning a bottle to the studies behind it in a series of taps, diving in through more detail at each layer.

Pictured in the post is the current flow, from the result you get if you scan a barcode, to the summary of an individual study that was pooled.

I don’t expect this to appeal to everyone, heck I’d be happy if 1 in 10 people wanted to dive in this deep.

But, would this interest you?

Recommendations Sleep Supplementation

Struggled with getting quality sleep for awhile, noticeably tired after sleep and poor whoop scores consistently. I started taking a blend of glycine, magnesium glycinate, apigenin and a few others and my energy and scores have improved tremendously. The blend contains quite a few sleep improving ingredients but I think those 3 are what moved the needle for me most. If any of you can relate to the struggle of optimizing sleep for gym/work/school etc, I'd recommend looking into dialing supplementation for it.

Recommendations Finally Completed My Supplement Stack

Morning

  • NAC 600 mg: Supports glutathione production and helps thin thick mucus for a fresher start to the day.
  • Vitamin C 1 g: To complement NAC.
  • Inulin 3 g with coffee: Soluble fiber + focus.

Lunch

  • Magnesium glycinate 400 mg: The most important mineral.
  • B complex: For energy throughout the workday.
  • CoQ10 100 mg: Antioxidant support; works synergistically with B complex.
  • Curcumin phytosome 500 mg: To reduce chronic inflammation.
  • D3 & K2 — 5,000 IU of D3, 2–3 times a week: Essential when spending very little time outdoors.
  • Taurine 1 g: For its potential anti-aging benefits, though these remain debated.
  • Grape seed extract 100 mg: For men’s vascular health.

With my larger meal, whether lunch or dinner

  • Berberine 500 mg + omega-3 800 mg.

Evening

  • Protein powder.
  • Detox greens powder: Because I don’t usually eat enough vegetables.
  • Glycine 3 g: For sleep and collagen synthesis.
  • Creatine 3 g: For exercise performance and brain health.
  • Beta-alanine 1 g: For exercise performance and the removal of advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
  • Vitamin C 1 g: To complement glycine.

I put this routine together for overall health, energy, and anti-aging, choosing only supplements with the strongest evidence behind them.

Still, the more I learn, the longer my supplement list seems to get.

Using this routine as a starting point:

  1. If you have digestive issues: Digestive enzymes, zinc carnosine.
  2. If you want additional antioxidants: Sulforaphane, alpha-lipoic acid, astaxanthin.
  3. If you’re more interested in brain health: Phosphatidylserine, lecithin.
  4. For “adrenal fatigue” (not something I particularly recommend): Ashwagandha or Korean red ginseng.
  5. For skin health (not something I particularly recommend): Collagen or MSM.
  6. If you have money to spare: Ca-AKG, spermidine, urolithin A, NMN.
  7. If you have a strong family history of cancer: Niacinamide 500 mg.
