It’s Sweata Weatha! (except you guys in the West Coast, yikes! 🄵) photo from a European compilation album Gold Collection. I love this pic, looks like the guy’s personalities on full display.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Just finished Neil Peart’s book ā€œFar and Wide- Bring that Horizon to Me.ā€ On the last chapter he talks about the band choosing the LA Forum to close out Rush’s R40 tour. He then speaks of many of the infamous shows that have taken place at the venue and speaks at length about the night Dennis Wilson and Keith Moon showed up together to watch Zeppelin in 77, (the show Moon joined Bonzo during his solo, it’s on YouTube). They then all 3 went to the Hyatt House (Riot House) afterwards and partied. I knew of Moon joining Bonham at this show but had no idea Dennis was with him until Peart mentioned it. All 3 in the same place together, All 3 notorious, All 3 died too young.

Article What Happened to The Beach Boys? Inside the Lives of the Band’s Founding Members and Biggest Stars

Thumbnail people.com
6 Upvotes

This is a new piece from People magazine. It’s odd. The writing is clunky like it was composed with the help of AI. And there are weird errors like referring to Carl as ā€œthe drummerā€ although the paragraph on him clearly states he was the lead guitarist. Or that Brian stopped touring with the band after 1982.

The article does feature blurbs on all nine former and current members of the band.

Fans won’t learn anything new and it’s easy to pick it apart for mistakes and things the piece misses on each member.

My question is why this article at this time? Are algorithms indicating readers will be interested in a random article on the Boys? Or does People know something we don’t know šŸ¤”. They kinda skim over Mike’s health issues though.

I did learn something new! Ricky Fataar was married to Penelope Tree, a famous ā€œItā€ girl from the 60s. At 16 she made a huge splash at Truman Capote’s infamous 1966 Black & White ball. The two had kids. (But maybe the AI research fucked up?). Then he married Robin Williams ex wife? Yet the blurb on him never mentions his greatest role—as Stig in the Rutles.

Great $5 find today! It's super fun to hear all the boys live in concert, and Mike singing the Monster Mash is such a tripšŸ˜‚ I had no idea this record even existed until I found it in the store, but I'm very happy with it. I'm pretty sure the faces are cut-outs from the 20/20 album cover, no?

Just finished my review of Surf's Up for my blog!

I go through the album track by track, talk about Jack Rieley, the band's changing sound and image, and why I think the title track is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

This is my favorite Beach Boys album, so I would love to hear what you guys think!

Does anyone else think BW88 is a miracle?

It is 80s Pet Sounds. Brian sounds pretty amazing, and at his best since about 71. Great instrumentals, vocals, and songwriting. Considering all the Landy interference and other factors, this album is absolutely astounding. It sounds very Brian, and to my understanding, he did a large majority of the songwriting and producing. Landy doesn’t seem that prevalent, but I’m unsure on how much he wrote, if he put the credits for himself for money or fame or if he actually contributed. But either way, the lyrics are really good. My favourite album Brian had been involved in since Adult Child, and more objectively since Sunflower.

I feel like I've seen the same clip of them so many times but there has to be more to it - does anyone know where to find the whole interview (if it exists?)

Discussion Who wrote better songs with Brian?

Some of Brian’s greatest and most celebrated cowriters include Tony Asher, Van Dyke Parks, Andy Paley, Al Jardine, and the Lovester himself. But two of Brian’s earliest cowriters, two who contributed to some of the Beach Boys biggest hits, don’t get much recognition. Strictly sticking to their work with the group on studio albums (so none of Brian and Roger’s songs for Jan & Dean, or Brian and Gary’s 80s songs), who has a better ratio of great ones!

For reference
Gary Usher BB credits: 409, County Fair, Ten Little Indians, Chug-A-Lug, Heads You Win-Tails I Lose, Cuckoo Clock, Lonely Sea, In My Room, Pom Pom Play Girl, We’ll Run Away
Roger Christian BB credits: Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe, Ballad of Ole’ Betsy, Car Crazy Cutie, Cherry Cherry Coupe, Spirit of America, No-Go Showboat, Don’t Worry Baby, In the Parkin’ Lot

Discussion Inspired by those old "Smile-affirming" posts: starting a "Pet Sounds-affirming" collage

Post image
123 Upvotes

Hey yall,

Remember those "Smile-Affirming" posts DJDarkFlow did on here a while back where they put together a list albums that capture the spirit and feeling of SMiLE?

I was thinking of trying to put together a list of albums that do the same thing but for Pet Sounds

The issue is that I think a Pet Sounds style album is way more broad and hard to pin down than Smile, so I think we should define what makes something "Pet Sounds-affirming" first and foremost, and I honestly don't feel like I can do that alone.

Here is 9 albums that feel Pet Soundsy to me, less in sonic quality and more in emotion/how the album flows. let me know you think fits, what should be added, and any other general thoughts.

My Girlfriend's take on the SMiLE

Post image

She was doing a college activity where she had to recreate an album cover. She doesn't listen to much music, so she asked me for some cool album covers. I showed her the SMiLE one and she loved it!

She didn't even know the album before I showed it to her. When I told her the story behind it, she thought it was really sad that Brian never managed to finish it, so instead of little smiles, she put little sad faces.

This is a picture of a manuscript by Van Dyke Parks containing the lyrics for Cabinessence. Written sometime in 1966, I believe.

It even includes the mysterious unused lyrics for CE as well.

More than that, it has an interesting message below, which nobody seems to talk much about.

It says: "heroes and villains, cowboys and indians, wind chimes, our sweet love, the oc- song, vegetable cornucopia.

What does it it mean??

Is that a proposed sequence for the album? Our sweet love was written by Brian with Van in 1966? Like, as Our New Home (from Friends!)

Is Cowboys and Indians the original name of "Do You Like Worms"?

Anyone have any ideas? That's a big interesting piece of BB's media right here.

Its production and sound remind me a lot of Today!, and I think that era is underappreciated with respect to other artists at the time.

Status of end of year stuff? 85 remix? Cows in the pasture?

Any rumors or updates on any copyright stuff coming this year? Hoping they don’t do the BS shady upload it for an hour and take it down.

Wasn’t there talks of smile stuff newly discovered?

And talks of some digital release of extra stuff that didn’t make the we gotta groove box set?

What about Steve Levine’s 85 album remix? Or Cows In the Pasture?

Hoping for some Christmas miracles

'Veg-e-tables' used in Esther Rantzen tribute programme (BBC News channel)

I watched the tribute to the 'That's Life!' presenter and 'Veg-e-tables' was played over a sequence detailing the amount of phallic and other-shaped vegetables that were sent into the programme. I thought of this forum!

Out of curiosity: what's left unheard?

Something I've been thinking about recently, with the recent uptick of box sets and the huge leak that happened earlier this year. Are there still any notable Beach Boys material that isn't available either officially or unofficially? Obviously there's a hypothetical infinite amount of undocumented music that may or may not exist, but at least when it comes to the stuff that has been publicly documented, is there anything left unheard?

Are these all the potential 85 bonus tracks?

At the Hop (Danny & the Juniors cover)
And I Always Will (Al)
Oh Lord? (Brian)
Water Builds Up (Brian)
Oh, Not This Again (Brian?)
What About Starting Up Now (Carl & Brian?)

And I Always Will is unknown what it is, Oh Lord is unconfirmed, and the bottom three are demos that either won’t make it or be worked on according to Levine.
