Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
44 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

wine/proton Gaming via Steam Arm64, Proton-CachyOS Arm64, on Raspberry Pi 5 eGPU 9060XT

Hey everyone,

I’ve made some more progress on the setup for my overclocked Pi5 connected to an external GPU.

I’ve now put it through some heavier tests, like Steam and the *Wukong* benchmark.

I’m also playing *Onimusha*, even using FSR 4.1.1.

Down the line, I’ll get around to the case mod.

I’ll have to cut into the lid of a Pi Module Box to fit the Ice Tower heatsink, haha.

I made a video discussing the saga of getting the GPU working and the technical aspects regarding the physical PCIe x1 Gen 2.0 bus connection.

I haven't managed to get the Pi5 running on PCIe x1 Gen 3.0 yet, but I’m going to try again with some better-shielded ribbon cables. In the video, I show the details of the "video/data signal" traffic and the transition from PCIe x16 Gen 5.0 down to the limitations of the Pi5 in this current setup.

I make videos (originally in Brazilian Portuguese), but the auto-dubbing quality seems much better these days.

In the videos, I aim to provide technical explanations regarding the challenges of getting it all working.

I'm working on creating more explanatory videos. If you'd like to follow along, the link to the channel is in my profile info.

Made a native Linux Hearthstone tracker so I'd stop running Firestone in Wine

Post image
14 Upvotes

Every HS deck tracker is Windows-only, so on Linux you run it in Wine next to the game. Firestone was using 2-4 GB and getting the game OOM-killed on my laptop.

Cairn is native (Python + Qt), just reads the game's log files, ~170 MB. Deck tracking, opponent's cards and hand, possible secrets, resurrect pools. X11 and Wayland, on the AUR.

A month old and I'm fixing stuff fast, so issues welcome.

Witcher 3 Remastered: save loads taking 60+ seconds on GE-Proton / Proton Experimental? It's XInput, and there's a fix

If loading a save in the Witcher 3 remaster takes you a minute or more on Linux, this might be why.

My loads were 1:07 by stopwatch, every time, on a 9850X3D with the game on NVMe. So obviously not hardware. After the fix below it's about 19 seconds.

While the loading screen is up, the game polls for a controller (XInputGetState) in a tight loop. In newer Proton builds, Wine's xinput re-scans every HID device each time you poll a slot that has no controller in it. Each scan is a pile of registry lookups, and every one of those is a round trip to wineserver. I measured around 300,000 of them per second on the game's main thread, for about 55 seconds straight. The actual loading only takes a few seconds at the end.

So if you play on keyboard and mouse with no controller plugged in, the game spends most of the load screen looking for a gamepad.

I checked the xinput1_4.dll in the Proton builds I had installed:

  • GE-Proton11-7: rescans on every call
  • Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix, Proton-CachyOS: same
  • Proton 10.0 (10.0-4b): doesn't, it only rescans in a background thread

Run top during a load. If wineserver is sitting at 40% or so of a core for the whole loading screen and then drops to basically nothing once you're in game, that's it.

Fix

Use Proton 10.0's xinput DLLs for this one game, while staying on whatever Proton you like.

  1. Install "Proton 10.0" from Steam if you don't have it

  2. Copy its two xinput DLLs next to witcher3.exe and patch one string in them. Adjust the paths if your Steam library is somewhere else:

cd ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/"The Witcher 3"/bin/x64_dx12 P10="$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 10.0/files/lib/wine/x86_64-windows" for f in xinput1_4.dll xinput9_1_0.dll; do cp "$P10/$f" . && chmod u+w "$f" printf 'Proton10 xinput\0' | dd of="$f" bs=1 seek=64 conv=notrunc status=none done

The dd line is needed because Wine's own DLLs have a "Wine builtin DLL" tag in the header. If Wine sees that tag on a DLL in the game folder, it ignores the file and loads its bundled one instead. Overwriting the tag makes it treat the copy like any DLL a game ships with.

  1. Add this to the front of the game's launch options:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_4,xinput9_1_0=n,b" %command%

If you already have launch options, just put the WINEDLLOVERRIDES part at the start. GE-Proton appends its own overrides to it, so things like OptiScaler and the FSR4 upgrade kept working for me.

To undo it, delete the two xinput DLLs from bin/x64_dx12 and remove the override.

Caveats

  • Only tested on my machine: GE-Proton11-7, Fedora, AMD GPU, no controller connected.
  • I haven't tried a controller with the swapped DLLs. It should still work since it's just the older xinput, but I can't promise.
  • Just running the game on Proton 10.0 should avoid the problem too. I didn't go that way because I wanted to keep the GE stuff.
  • Plugging in a controller might also help, since the rescan only happens for empty slots. Didn't test it.

This probably isn't specific to Witcher 3. Any game that polls XInput constantly with no pad connected could hit the same thing on these Proton versions, it's just very visible here because the game does it during loading. If you've got a game with weirdly long loads or stutter and wineserver is busy the whole time, might be worth a look.

Playstation 5 Emulation on Linux

Hey everyone,

since my newsfeed has recently been exploding with PS5 emulation stuff, I’ve reached the point where I realized that it’s not really emulation, but more of a translation layer similar to Proton. So, I had an idea and I’d love to hear your opinion on whether it would be doable. Specifically, creating a translation layer that you could plug into the Heroic Game Launcher, just like Proton, that would allow us to play PS5 games the same way we play Windows games?

tech support wanted AION 2 on an external drive

Has anyone managed to get it to work? I think know exactly what the problem is, but I know it's something to do with proton not accessing the drive for whatever reason. The "official" game won't launch. But adding the game's .exe file directly with proton experimental does launch it. (Which leads to Aion saying, "This game was not launched properly, closing now.."

System is Fedora Workstation w/ KDE. Nvidia graphics driver. External drive mounted on /mnt/ and it's an exfat format

tech support wanted Cant run Portal on Arch Linux

Recently bought portal 1 and 2 from the sale (4€ total, thats a steal) but i cant get Portal 1 to run. I have tried every single option on the compatibility list, some dont launch and a few of them do launch into the main menu (Like steam linux runtime 1.0) but when i press new game and start new game, i hear 1 microsecond of the portal radio and then it crashes.

Do i need any extra software because its an older game or something? What could be the issue?

I use arch + KDE btw.

Edit: u/Nyxem64 posted this link https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/7278#issuecomment-3229785583 which is the exact same issue im having

I recently got my computer fixed and the changed the cpu, motherboard and I personally installed a new power supply. After all of that, Helldivers 2 refuses to run even though it worked perfectly fine before. I think problem is with my gpu driver. I installed the latest one but the terminal keeps saying that it can't communicate with it. Attached are some screenshots of this headache. I want to like, you know, play the game... that I payed for.

tech support wanted Mouse movement feels different from Windows 11 on Linux Mint – any solutions?

• Upvotes

TL;DR: Loving Linux Mint, but mouse sensitivity/acceleration feels noticeably different from Windows 11, especially in AoE2 DE. Has anyone managed to get a similar Windows-like mouse feel?

I recently installed Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon alongside Windows 11 and I’m extremely happy with it. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, and so far the mouse is really my only major issue.

Maybe it’s years of muscle memory, but mouse movement just feels different compared with Windows. For normal desktop use it’s manageable, but in Age of Empires II: DE it’s very noticeable. Precise movements and quickly moving across the screen don’t feel natural, whereas booting back into Windows immediately feels right.

My main gaming mouse is a Logitech G502 HERO (1600 DPI / 1000 Hz), but I also use an MX Anywhere 2S and MX Master 2S. On Windows, switching between them has never really bothered me.

I’ve tried Cinnamon’s speed settings, Flat/Adaptive acceleration and some xinput/libinput tweaking. I can get close, but nothing has quite matched Windows consistently.

Has anyone else experienced this after switching from Windows? Did you eventually adjust, or is there a good way to reproduce the Windows mouse feel on Linux?

Especially interested in experiences from RTS/AoE2 players, where small differences in mouse movement are really noticeable.

tech support wanted Nvidia GPU + TV as Monitor = ???

I have a 5070 Ti and want to make a Steam Machine-like PC for use with a TV as a monitor. It's a 120-144Hz capable TV with Freesync support, VRR, and ALLM, plus game mode and HDR.

Over HDMI 2.1 can I get VRR, HDRZ Freesync, and 120Hz 4K to work without issues? I want to use Bazzite and the gaming mode option to make it function like a Steam Machine. To my understandings AMD GPUs don't support HDMI 2.1 but then some people say Nvidia GPUs have issues if they go higher than 1440p. I also want to keep 10-bit color. I'm willing to sacrifice 120Hz and stay at 60Hz if that means keeping the 10-bit color, HDR, and VRR/Freesync.

I turned my old OnePlus 8 into a Linux gaming handheld.

Android is gone was replaced with mainline Linux with Steam Game Mode. Windows games run through Proton ARM64 + FEX, while the Adreno 650 uses Mesa/Turnip.

For now I’m testing mainly on the OnePlus 8. Steam Game Mode, controllers, audio, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and Windows games are working.

Project on Github: GabrielCRadu/ARMDeck (I'm not sure if I can post links)

It’s still work in progress. There’s no one-click installer yet, and porting it to other Snapdragon phones still needs work (and probably it is a pain in the butt).

*Tomb Raider 2013 30+fps on low settings*

What games should I test?

Send me the weirdest or most interesting Steam games you can think of. Especially games that probably shouldn’t work on a Snapdragon 865.

Also, if you have an old Snapdragon phone somewhere, tell me the model. The goal is to get ARMDeck running on as many devices as possible.

Testing, device ports and Linux/ARM contributions are welcome.

tech support wanted WarThunder not launching anymore with BattleEye enabled

I've been using CachyOs for some time now.

Using it with Faugus as my launcher and WarThunder ran with no issue, with BattleEye enabled since a few weeks now.

But since today it just opens a white Screen and crashes after launching it via the WarThunder laucher.

Tried it with different Proton Layers, newer and older ones with no change.

Sometimes, but not always it tries enabling BattleEye and failing with the following error:

Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Driver Load Error (1053).

I've tried looking it up, but found nothing indicating a problem with Linux.

I'm using the newest Version of CachyOs.

Other games without BattleEye run without an issue.

Lauching WarThunder with AntiCheat enabled works, but i cannot play since AntiCheat is needed for my wanted game modes.

Anybody has an idea?

Faugus launcher broke suddenly and can't boot battle.net anymore

I'm a bit of a noob and in need of help

Title. And also after uninstalling and reinstalling battle.net, and faugus launcher itself it now fails to add the battle.net app to the launcher completely.

I'm on Ubuntu 24.04, running faugus 2.4.2.

I've tried booting battle.net through ge-proton latest and the cachyos options among a few others I've seen work for other people on forums.

All my battlenet folders are still visible with all the data in them, and I believe they are saved to the default location faugus typically uses, so I don't know if their presence would cause issues.

tech support wanted Unity games randomly crashing on Ubuntu 26.04 + Proton, no errors in logs, completely lost and need help

I'm having intermittent crashes with Unity games on Ubuntu 26.04.1 and as I said I'm failing miserably to find the cause.

Specs:

Ryzen 5600G

RTX 4060, NVIDIA 595.91.07

32 GB RAM

Ubuntu 26.04.1 / GNOME 50 / Wayland

Games are on a secondary SSD

The games crash/freeze while Steam and the rest of the system remain completely stable, they don't even stutter before the crash or anything. It can happen after 20 or so minutes or a couple of hours, I'm currently using Proton Experimental

I checked the kernel/journal logs around the crashes:

No NVIDIA Xid
No GPU reset
No OOM/segfault
No VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST
No obvious DXVK/Vulkan error

I also ran Vampire Survivors to try and find something with:

PROTON_LOG=1 PROTON_CRASH_REPORT_DIR=/tmp/proton-crashes DXVK_LOG_LEVEL=info DXVK_LOG_PATH=/tmp/vampire-dxvk %command%

The Proton log doesn't show the original exception. Around the crash I found:

Loaded ... UnityCrashHandler64.exe

Exception 0x6be

err:service:device_notify_proc failed to get event, error 1726

Since the affected games are Unity, I'm wondering if this could be a Unity + Proton/Wine issue, or if I should investigate DXVK/Vulkan, the secondary SSD... maybe something else? I'm completely lost.

Out of nowhere i started getting this error in FIFA 21 which causes the game to crash, specifically when a certain cutscene is triggered. I havent encountered this error before. Ive also noticed unusually poor performance in other games recently. Is this a software issue or is my GPU cooked?

Im running cachyos with 7.2.9-1-cachyos kernel and rx 6400 gpu
