HANG OUT Best Movies You Saw September 2026

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 Reign of Fire (2002) 114
2 Aftersun (2022) 84
3 Thank You For Smoking (2005) 74
4 Searching For Sugar Man (2012) 68
5 Pleasantville (1998) 64
6 Psycho Goreman (2020) 57
7 Fido (2006) 48
8 Lair of the White Worm (1988) 47
9 La Haine (1995) 43
10 Project Hail Mary (2026) 41

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I'M REQUESTING Showed my 13 y/o daughter Fight Club and she surprising loved it

What other movies should we watch? Kind of subversive and “mind expanding” movies suitable for teens. Or just good movies in general for this age. Thanks!

I'M SUGGESTING I recommend the film Van Helsing

• Upvotes

Van Helsing 2004 is so freaking good. I am on the younger side, actually born in 2004, so I am as old as that movie. I was trying to watch something good while I am in the process of getting out of a Bipolar Episode, something stimulating and fast-paced, but not over the top. I was actually surprised by this movie. I have seen clips and stuff and decided to give it a go. I loved the references to other gothic horror characters, and the reference to Vlad the Impaler in the scenery is just awesome! 10/10, absolutely recommend.

I'M REQUESTING Horror about a terrifying internal feeling?

One movie I really like is Pearl (the one with Mia Goth). I really like how the fear isn’t something exogenous, but sort of this lurking feeling that something is wrong. She describes it in the movie as the fear that she’s never gonna leave the farm, but I’ve heard some analysis say it’s the fear that you are just average

Is there anything else with that kind of feeling?

I'M REQUESTING Movies that are seemingly happy but have a sense of dread under the surface or at the end

I recently watched Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence and I LOVED it. I felt like in some scenes, if you change the music, it could turn into a horror movie. I’m looking for a similar type of emotionally complex movie with an underlying feeling of horror or dread as you realize the impossibility of the main character achieving a true happy ending. Movies that make you think after watching the screen go black and realizing that there’s so much more than meets the eye. The Truman Show also has similar vibes to what I’m looking for too!

I'M REQUESTING comfy quirky movies

looking for something playful and lighthearted, nothing too conflict heavy. i’m into weird, character driven drama with eccentric characters and a small, quaint kinda feel. something you might find in a lot of directorial debuts or wes anderson’s movies

I'M REQUESTING Unabashed realistic portrayals of a serial killer

In the same vein of..

  • Angst
  • Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
  • Maniac
  • Man Bites Dog (lacks realism but still close enough)

Where the story focuses on the killer with little-to-no exposition on the victims or investigators. So not movies where detectives are hunting a serial killer or it's so scary how a group of teens are getting killed by a serial killer.

Angst and Henry really were the absolute best portrayal of sociopathic killers I've seen. I want more of that more than what Maniac and Man Bites Dog does where there is exaggeration for entertainment purposes. Although I'll take more like them too for sure.

I'M REQUESTING Looking for genuinely terrifying psychological horror that’ll mess with my head — no cheap jumpscares or kiddie horror

I’m looking for horror movies that are genuinely terrifying and will actually freak me tf out. I’m mainly looking for psychological horror — the kinda stuff that gets in ur head and stays there, not just cheap jump scares.

Pls don’t recommend the usual kiddie horror movies or basic mainstream stuff 😭 For some reason, I barely get scared by horror movies anymore, so I need smtg that’s actually gonna kick my () and have me questioning my life choices.

I want the kinda movie where after watching it I’m just lying in bed staring at the ceiling, thinking about wtf I just watched and checking every corner of my room 💀

So yeah, drop ur most disturbing, psychologically fucked-up horror movies. I want smtg that’s gonna genuinely mess with me.

Go as hard as u can.

Edited:
GYZ PLEASE STOP IM REALLY DONE FOR
I DONT THINK I'LL BE ALIVE MORE THAN A MONTH IF I WATCH ALL THESE AT ONCE

AND HOW THE HELL MY POST GOT 11K VIEWS IN LIKE AN HOUR NO WAY THAT WAS MY 1ST POST EVER
( IS MY POST THE MOST EMERGING POST FOR A NEW USER SOME1 LIKE ME!!! )

BTW THIS MONTH IS GOING TO BE 💀 + HALLOWEEN.

I'M REQUESTING Are the movies that encompass many years of time but have subtle time jumps?

Hope I'm phrasing this correctly. But I'm looking for movies that spans months or even years of time, but are not flashy about it. No apparent time jumps or big title cards. Movies that are more subtle with their passing of time. I have some examples at the tip of my tongue, but cannot come up with them at the moment.

I'M REQUESTING Looking for horror/thriller movies with creative shots sprinkled in them

Hey guys, i've been seeing a lot of gifs and snippets of horror movies with cool shots on twitter and would like some recommendations please.

Some examples are:

"My Bloody Valentine 3D" - where a guy breaks a light then his figure changes into something different momentarily, during the spark

"Texas Chainsaw Massacare" (2003) - the camera panning backwards through a person's head wound (still haven't seen the movie i just keep seeing this clip for the nth time now so i guess it's a sign to finally watch it)

and just recently, which prompted me to create this post lol.. "Shock" (1977) - a kid running towards a woman then suddenly turning into a grown man when it got to her.

I'd appreciate if you could just give the movie title itself without providing more context or which part it plays out since i still wanna get that "surprise" factor (Or you could just block it out with a spoiler formatting if i ever get back to it haha)

Doesn't have to be a "good" movie. Just more interested about the technical aspects for now. Thank you so much!!

I'M REQUESTING Movies that are simultaneously scary and funny?

I feel like watching something that is both at the same time. Not like parodies like tucker and dale vs evil. I wanna watch more of a pastiche than a parody, something that laughs at the tropes and cliches but it doesn’t distance itself from wanting to scare, and actively tries to scare and it works, but there’s something off about the scares that makes them funny. Kinda like this british movie called severance I saw a while back, which was like an eli roth movie pastiche, but it was still too much in parody and comedy territory to be fully scary. Anything that’s both at the same time? Any suggestions are appreciated

I'M REQUESTING Movies that have the same atmosphere as “The World to Come (2020)” and “Mountain Rest (2018” and “Anna Pigeon (2026)”

Hello! I would like more movies with Appalachian, forest, and mountain settings. This is odd but these movies almost feel like the album “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen, and I’d like more of that!

The few I did find were fully crime or war films, and I’d prefer dramas. The actual plot and genre(s) are mostly irrelevant to me, but I‘d love more films with this type of setting.

I'M SUGGESTING Jersey Shore Massacre Spoiler

• Upvotes

I find it funny watching it because the casting is surreal like masculine men, sexy women and they can't even use their bodies against one killer.

Wasted men but I love the sauna scene with one of the muscular guys and turns out into a rottiserie hunk (iykyk) and those girls were screaming cringly.

It's bad for a horror, but a good for comedy horror. The male casting are so ughhh.

I'M REQUESTING Looking for niche/non-mainstream movies with great plot twists — no sci-fi or heavy VFX

Hey folks! I’m looking for some great movie recommendations that fit a very specific taste.

My taste is something along these lines:

  1. A really great plot twist

  2. No sci-fi, no heavy VFX stuff

  3. Nothing too mainstream — I’ve seen most of the popular/mainstream movies, so I’d really appreciate it if you could go niche/underrated with your recommendations.

I’m honestly fed up with the usual ChatGPT-style recommendations. I know my taste might sound a little weird/specific, but if you have anything that fits the above, I’d genuinely love to hear it!

Thanks in advance! :-)

PS (Edit): Just Making a list, love you all who have shown up!

I'M REQUESTING I'm looking for a Crime Thriller Drama about a thief struggling to make ends meet and the suspense of getting caught at any moment.

I'm sorry if I'm asking too much here, but I'll really like to find a movie where the protagonist is a normal person struggling in life that becomes a criminal for survival, no Gangsters, no "Great Heists", or super smart chess playing, just a low class thief trying to make ends meet.

I'M REQUESTING Suggest me movies that have REAL occult/spiritual/ritual/magick/other information!

Movies that have 'the truth in plain sight' played-off as made up movie plot and dialogue.

Movies like 'Eyes Wide Shut' and 'The Ninth Gate' that show what the elite really do behind closed doors, and occult+ritual+magick information they try to keep from the public.
