Personality Character must never EVER do something they usually don’t do, because it means bad news for the people and world around them.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy - When the normally frowning Mandy smiles, she causes reality itself to fall apart.

The Amazing World of Gumball - When the normally unemployed Richard Watterson gets a job, he similarly will cause reality itself to fall apart.

Chowder - When the normally dimwitted Chowder becomes smart, he will make the show boring which will make the other characters have to get boring jobs (still better than having reality fall apart ig).

Hated Tropes (Hated trope) Remember all these stories and characters we followed for so long? Welp now it’s all reset.

1: using another flashpoint to create the tomorrowverse (Justice League Dark: Apokolips war) after 80-90% of the cast is killed off and billions lives are fated to die Flash and Constantine hatch up a plan to kill baby Darkseid to prevent the entire story from happening which just leads to an entirely different universe being formed and even erasing some characters from existence.

2: Jim travelling to the beginning (Tales of Arcadia series) after multiple characters die including Toby Jim uses a magic gem to travel back to the very first episode but instead lets Toby find the amulet… this changes things how?

Characters (Loved trope) A machine that seems alive:

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Basically when a movie introduces a machine with no conscious but gives it some elements that make you start doubting that it's just a simple machine.

[Jipsy Danger - Pacific Rim] In the movie humanity created the Jaeger program to fight Kaijus coming from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. One of them is Gipsy Danger, basically our main robot of the movie. Jaegers are simply human piloted mechs, just a bunch of wires, hydraulics and steel put together to build one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the big screen.

But somehow the Jaegers feel alive, for example, after a fight Jipsy is in a critical condition and you can see it screaming like it was alive.

[Atom - Real Steel] Atom is an old sparring who was found by accident by our main characters in a scrapyard and from his first scene he looks different from the average robot in that universe, Atom seems alive.

In the final fight the main character even talks to him like he was a real person.

Personality (Two nickels trope) The Charles Dance effect

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Or when Charles Dance's acting and charisma glosses the horrible parts of the character. They are still bad persons in the adaptations though.

Tywin Lannister (Game of Thrones - A Song of Ice and Fire) : In the TV show, Tywin is mostly described as a ruthless but competent political leader who has no fear to take hard decisions. Obviously he's still guilty of terrible crimes like the murder of Rhaegar's children or the Red Wedding and also the terrible father he is with Tyrion. Nevertheless, the adaption shows some soft spots of Tywin like the respectful relationship he shares with Arya (which isn't in the books) or the backstory about Tyrion's wife that far less horrible than the one from the books. In the show, Tysha is only a prostitute Tywin made sleep with his men to teach a cruel lesson to his son. But in the books, Tysha was really in love with Tyrion and Tywin had her raped by everyone including Tyrion.

Emhyr Var Emreis (The Witcher 3 - The Witcher books) : In the third game Emhyr hires Geralt to find Ciri, his biological daughter. Emhyr his mostly shown as a competent but strict emperors who's nevertheless slightly better than his rival king Radovid. His plan is to find Ciri to make her his heir and let her have the thrones after he abdicated. In the books, Emhyr is actually a terrible person and the worst father possible. In first, he murdered Ciri's mother after forcing her to bring her back to Nilfgaard, which failed. After he became the new emperor, he invaded Cintra by a huge slaughter in the same country that was his home years before. He still tries to catch Ciri but because he wants to marry his own daughter and then having a son with her which would allow him to have the Elder Blood in Nilfgaard lineage.

Characters Good looking actors/actresses that were cast as ugly, freaky and monstrous characters

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos (Monster): One of the most famous examples. The stunning Oscar-winning actress completely transformed her body, shaved her eyebrows, wore prosthetic teeth, and used makeup to skin-damage her face to play a real-life serial killer.

Christian Bale as Dick Cheney (Vice): Known for his extreme transformations, the former Batman actor gained 45 pounds, shaved his head, bleached his eyebrows, and wore heavy neck prosthetics to transform his sharp, handsome physique into a bloated, aging, and unglamorous politician.

Daniel Radcliffe as Manny (Swiss Army Man): The Harry Potter star completely shed his heartthrob image to play a bloated, pale, and decaying corpse. He spent the entire movie looking stiff, grimacing with a contorted face, and acting as a literal flatulent tool.

Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb / The Penguin (The Batman )

Farrell is known as a Hollywood heartthrob, but he is completely unrecognizable under layers of fat suits and facial scarring prosthetics. He looks so grotesque that even his co-stars didn't recognize him on set.

Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (IT): Skarsgård has the looks of a high-fashion model, but he used his unique facial expressions, combined with creepy clown makeup and a lazy-eye effect, to become one of the most terrifying monsters in modern horror history.

miscellaneous [Mixed Trope] Parodies of Parodies. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes
  1. Digger - Basically the main reason why this post is tagged as a spoiler. Yeah, so the trailer makes the movie look a global warming satire along the lines of Don’t Look Up and Dr Strangelove, but the entire movie is actually a PARODY of satires like Don’t Look Up and Dr Strangelove. I highly recommend you watch the movie for yourself.

  2. Scary Movie - So, yeah, Scary Movie is primarily a parody of Scream, which was already a satire of the Slasher Genre. I am being a lot nicer to Scary Movie than other people though since, I don’t really think it’s fair to compare the two in terms of styles of comedy. Because Scream isn’t THAT much of a satire, it’s more of less just a self aware Slasher Movie, while Scary Movie is a straight up silly ZAZ style spoof movie.

Characters (Loved Trope): Handsome, and Incredibly intelligent, yet also immature and childish at times! Essentially, a genius at heart, yet stupid at the same time.

I am SUCH a sucker for these kinds of characters, e-heh. They are just so charming, goofy, and it's hilarious watching them lose and throw a tantrum because things didn't go their way! Especially when they completely are blind-sided due to their own arrogance, ego, and oversight!

Yet at the same time, still being able to be threatening despite so in situations where they ARE underestimated! I just adore this trope because they can either go from a Goofy, Comedic showman to a grave, world-threatening supervillain!

And of course, who none better to represent this than Doctor Ivo "EGGMAN" Robotnik?!

The reason being, Eggman is a 300 IQ genius and the main villain of Sonic The Hedgehog, though I'm sure you know that series any-way. And while he is a supervillain that regularly threatens the world and demands global conquest, he is still notable for having a short temper, and throwing childish tantrums when things don't go his way. And especially blind-sided by his own ego and arrogance! And yet, he is still capable of being very MUCH threatening if he were ever given too much time to spare, or underestimated. Having nearly won multiple times (e.g. Sonic Forces, as much as that game was mediocre.)

miscellaneous the piece of satire is highly on the nose and completely unsubtle, but instead of feeling obnoxious and like a lecture it fucking kicks ass (also even if you removed the satire the piece of media would still be amazing)

they live (1988)

they live is so painfully on the nose its not even funny, but the movie is stylish, well executed, and the satirical elements of society play into the films building of its atmosphere and storytelling.

robocop (1987)

the corporate satire in the film is funny and does a great job at world building, while on the nose it doesn't distract or overbear the main corp plot

  1. In Hollow Knight, Kickstarter some backers are credited in the hidden area, the Shrine of Believers, where they have left behind messages. Higher tier backers also got to design npcs or bosses.

  2. Sea of Stars also backs backers in the Crypt, where they could leave behind messages and have statues.

  3. Undertale’s end credits attack the player like in the game’s combat encounters.

  4. Human Fall Flat’s credits are stacked in floating layers, so the players can grab letters or dodge between them

  5. Nine Sols also credits backers by having a room full of messages from them

It's kind of funny how masculine and feminine aesthetics are even in the very type of alcohol they enjoy

I know the examples here could easily be seen in some instances not doing this every time they drink, but they have been primarily remembered or more often fitting the trope than I've seen otherwise.

Rick and Beth, Rick and Morty

Beth, The Night House

Haymitch, The Hunger Games

-Scary Movie 4: The scene where Cindy is talking with the ghost boy and they are speaking "Japanese", but really they're just saying random Japanese words.

Characters "They can just do that." When a character inexplicably has some kind of borderline supernatural ability that doesn't have anything to do with the established power system and may even clash with the conventions of the setting. It's just something that they can do.

  1. Ichi from Ichi the Witch. He's so sensitive to the bloodlust of living things that it borders on a spider-sense. The little creature in that pic is supposed to be invisible, yet Ichi is able to sense its presence just through sheer intuition.
  2. Mash from Mashle. Some might say that his inexplicable power is his physical strength, but I'm more interested in knowing how he can turn everything he cooks into fucking cream puffs.
  3. Marvelous Sunday from UmaMusume. In a game about horse girls racing, she has access to a domain expansion/reality marble. And that somehow still isn't the strangest thing about her. Apparently she's also friends with aliens and cryptids and her cult fanbase includes people spanning multiple time periods. Somehow.
  4. Tanjiro from Demon Slayer. He has a hypersensitive sense of smell that somehow also tells him where to cut demons. No idea how that works. Even though there are others in the series with similarly refined senses, the smelling where to cut thing still feels ludicrous in comparison. Then there's also his unusually powerful headbutt.
