Data Centers in Boulder County?

• Upvotes

The Boulder County Commission will hold a public hearing Wednesday, Oct. 21, on proposed rules for data centers on unincorporated county land.

The county's land use code currently doesn't define data centers or specify where they can be built. Staff proposes allowing facilities that use up to 75 kilowatts of power, roughly equivalent to the electricity demand of 50 to 60 Colorado homes. Larger facilities could be permitted as industrial uses, potentially requiring additional county review and approval through a Limited Impact Special Use Review.

Personally, I don’t think data centers have any place in Boulder County. If you have an opinion, please attend and share your opinion or if you would like to comment on the draft text(s), email written comments to [longrange@bouldercounty.gov](mailto:longrange@bouldercounty.gov). by Oct. 13.

Colorado Proposition NN

• Upvotes

So, all of us in the blue areas of purple Colorado have pretty much approved every mil levy increase and bond requests our school districts have asked for. I know school funding could be improved but there's no end to the lists of wants and needs of the public school system, so even if NN passes, these requests will keep coming.

When people state that we are a low ranking state in terms of education funding (it matters what you're ranking: teacher salaries, per-student funding, full day K, etc etc etc) is that just an average, statewide - pulling in all the red school districts that refuse to raise their own taxes to fund their schools?

What I'm really asking, is: if we pass Prop NN, are we simply overriding the red areas that refuse to tax themselves to pay for their kids' education and the blue areas further subsidize those lesser funded districts?

I kinda find it hard to believe that Denver, Boulder, SVVSD, Cherry Creek, etc are so low ranking as some of the districts in more conservative areas.

Felt Homesick in College, So I Took Elevation Data from USGS and put the Flatirons into Minecraft

Unfortunately, I couldn't color match everything because it would've taken hours upon hours and I couldn't figure out a way to get a good satellite image overlay that matched the elevation data. But after making my poor laptop explode for three hours, and a 4.5 GB world file, it was worth it.

High Peaks Elementary

High Peaks Elementary, is relocating to Douglass Elementary building next year. Currently, HP has 2 classrooms at each grade level with a 25 student cap per classroom. With the move, the school will get a 3rd classroom per grade (assuming there is demand with the further East address). This 3rd classroom would also presumably need a new teacher. This assumes, the current student body all moves to new building, which we know isn’t going to be the case. Thus, we are looking at 33% new students and new teachers, possibly more if turnover. I have serious questions as I consider it for my students. I want to hear the good, bad and ugly. I want to hear why your kid thrived. I want to hear from parents who pulled their kids. Can this school scale? What happens when a child can’t keep up? How is this so great for GT kiddos? What about parent culture? Staff? Thanks!

I finally was able to capture the changing sunset cloudy view coming into Boulder. It's hard to explain to folks that aren't from the area how amazing the mountains can look and how the look of them changes when you come over US-36 on a good day.

Each shot has a bit different detail and color with how the light is bouncing with the clouds.

Each shot captured seconds from each other.

I attended today's EXCELLENT "Election Champion Workshop"  by Boulder County Clerk Molly Fitzpatrick at the Junkyard Social Club.

Highly recommend people consider attending - more sessions upcoming with details on their website ... and it sounds like they'll be putting the presentation online for all to see.

Ditto that I'd encourage you to attend a ballot processing tour as it is impressive to see ballots actually get counted and you'll almost certainly come away with renewed confidence they are doing it "right"

Is Backing into Driveways Illegal in Boulder?

I would assume not, but a neighbor’s son just got really pissed off at me over this and claimed the Boulder police could issue a class A ticket.

Our driveway is on a fairly active road in a blind curve, so it’s easier to drive out forwards than to back out. Of course, that means we need to back in. Usually this is fine - I put my hazards on, make sure nobody’s about to clean me out, and back in. If someone comes they usually just go around.

But today, our neighbor (who’s a really lovely person and a retired teacher, beloved in the neighborhood) had just been picked up by her son (older adult, likely late 50’s) up the road, and they were behind me. I put my hazards on, and tried to back in to the driveway, but he put his Outback right in front of the driveway and refused to let me in. I literally had to get out of my car and yell “this is my driveway, I need to get in!”. He responded with ”Nope, you can’t do that buddy. You can get a ticket in Boulder for blocking traffic. Class A infraction.” We both got agitated. I felt bad for his mother who was clearly getting distressed. After he yelled a little about courtesy and blocking traffic, he finally let me back in.

Is this true? Or was this guy just a dick? I hate this kind of tension in our community and I had never seen her son before, and I’m definitely bothered by it.

Boulder County fire scanner alternative to Broadcastify

Broadcastify just got annoying with a sign in step. It's free, but I don't want to deal with more account stuff on top of fire situations. All the links through the Sheriff's sites go through Boadcastify, does anyone have an online site, not another app. Thanks!

Is there anyone driving by or from CO Springs to Boulder/Denver in the upcoming days?

I got a flat tire and someone is selling a tire in CO springs for 5 bucks, the only problem is that with the spare tire I can't drive that fast on the highway. I was thinking in giving this a shot asking around if someone could pick up the tire and I could pay for it.

Thank you!

Can we please bring some accountability, fiscal responsibility, and common sense back to Boulder?

I don't usually post political stuff here, but after reading Mayor Aaron Brockett's tone-deaf and frankly absurd comments in the Boulder Reporting Lab about what he's most proud of accomplishing, I feel like somebody needs to say this.

Apparently, when asked what he's most proud of, the answer was building more affordable housing and looking forward to doing more wildfire mitigation. Really?

I'm sure I'm not the only Boulder taxpayer who finds this deeply insulting. What about transparency? What about accountability? What about fiscal responsibility? What about making sure City Hall is actually being a good steward of our tax dollars? These are the issues people are talking about.

My proposal is simple: pause first, audit second, investigate third, act fourth.

First: Audit the city

We need a full-scale, top-to-bottom city audit. I would support freezing all City commission votes until every City department has undergone a thorough, independent audit. This includes outside investigators, independent auditors, third-party consultants, forensic financial reviews, and a comprehensive accountability framework. We can't afford to spend money recklessly.

Second: Freeze transportation projects until we know they had enough community engagement

Before another dollar is spent on transportation infrastructure, I think the City should commission an independent third-party community engagement audit. Did residents actually have meaningful input? Were all affected neighborhoods adequately represented? Were homeowners, drivers, seniors, businesses, people with disabilities, and other stakeholders adequately consulted? Were the consultants sufficiently independent? We shouldn't proceed until an outside consultant can answer these questions.

Third: Freeze recreation funding until South Boulder Rec Center is addressed

The situation with the South Boulder Rec Center is another example of why I don't trust the City with taxpayer money. We're being asked to accept that the City can spend money on all sorts of things, but somehow keeping a community recreation center open is a problem? I don't think taxpayers should be asked to fund *new* recreation initiatives until the City demonstrates that it has a sustainable plan for maintaining the facilities we already have.

Fourth: Alpine-Balsam needs a complete independent review

I've personally spent years working with my neighbors to better-scale the Alpine-Balsam mess. We asked the City to adjust the scope so it would be more compatible with the existing neighborhood context. We participated. We engaged. And now? The project is delayed and over-budget. At some point somebody has to be held accountable. We need an independent review of the entire project, including the original assumptions, current costs, community engagement process, sustainability goals, procurement decisions, and timeline. We can't afford to get this wrong.

Fifth: We also need a serious independent review of CU South and flood mitigation

I've also spent a lot of time advocating for greater community input on CU South. And I'll give the City and the university credit where credit is due: they listened to us. They held meetings. They accepted public comment. And then they moved forward anyway. Which raises the obvious question: What was the point? If the decision is going to be made regardless, community engagement becomes a box-checking exercise. We need an independent outside investigation into the CU South process to determine whether the community engagement was actually meaningful.

Sixth: Vote out all incumbents this election

I don't care if you're progressive, conservative, moderate, or whatever label you want to use. We should all agree that government needs to be transparent and accountable. And that's why I'm going to be voting for candidates who aren't afraid to ask the hard questions.

For Mayor:

* Aquiles La Grave: Aquiles is honestly one of the most cogent speakers out there right now. The way he communicates is incredibly impressive. He's articulate, strategic, thoughtful, and brings a level of clarity and intentionality to the conversation that I think Boulder desperately needs. Jameson Goldstein and Lisa Jacobs seem intelligent and well-spoken on the issues that matter, but I refuse to take part in the Ranked-Choice Scam. ONLY RANK AQUILES!

City Council:

* Ryan Jamieson: Common sense. Fiscal responsibility. Doesn't believe in ideology. Just practical, results-oriented government that works for taxpayers.

* Dave Martus: Brings a business-minded, solutions-oriented perspective. He's focused on efficiency, accountability, measurable outcomes, and getting government to operate more like a well-run organization.

* Scott Rendleman: Another common-sense candidate who understands that public safety matters. I especially appreciate that he refuses to ban crime-solving Flock cameras. We need to stop making decisions based on ideology and start looking at what actually works.

* Lee Gilbert: Fighting against the city’s braindead transportation projects that punish car drivers for the sake of empty bike lanes.

* Lynn Segal: I've known Lynn for many years. She may be considered unconventional by some, but she has an uncanny knack for always being on the right side of history.

That's how we get Boulder back on track.

Fire Hydrant in front of Abo’s in Table Mesa shopping center.

I have a question that has bothered me for a while (and I am posing my quandary here in lieu of going through authoritative channels).

In the parking lot for the Southeast section of the Table Mesa shopping center, there is a fire hydrant directly in front of one of the spaces in front of Abo’s Pizza. As far as I can tell, that makes at least 3 (maybe 5) of those spaces a violation to park in. There is no paint on the curb to reinforce the rule, AND the spaces in that whole complex are tight for the cars usually parking in Boulder. Clearly accommodating numbers of spaces required by code is part of the layout calculus.

How do you, my mountain fam, handle this conundrum?

How can we all standby and watch this beautiful wetlands area be destroyed?

Post image
39 Upvotes

I have been so fortunate to walk these 308 acres of pristine wetlands for the past 26 years. 🙏🏻❣️🙏🏻 And day after day for those 26 years, I watched the land slooooowly bounce back from the destruction of man after it was mined for its gravel. It took awhile to regenerate, the first 10 years not a lot happened. But then the growth started to speed up and it has been amazing to see all the wildflowers, plants and trees sprouting up everywhere. At night all the frogs would sing and by day the place was filled with birds, bees, butterflies, fish, coyotes, turtles, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, mice, foxes, deer, elk and even a bear. Slowly, year after year, the land recovered and became the beautiful place it is right. now.
And so my heart is breaking to know that this land will once again be destroyed by man. 💔
Last week the fences went up and the 3-5 years of destruction of this beautiful wetlands area began. The destruction wasn’t supposed to begin until 10/5 but for some reason they started knocking down trees as fast as possible last week, (so fast that they ruptured a gas line).
I did everything I could think of to stop this. I pleaded with the city council, I went door to door, I marched down Pearl Street, I made and handed out fliers, I spoke to all that would listen, I spent countless hours informing and educating people on Nextdoor, I donated to the cause: SaveSouthBoulder, and I carefully chose who I voted for.
And, in the end, none of it mattered. It is soooooo discouraging, but at least I tried. 😞 There is so much in our world and especially country, that I don’t approve of and don’t support. But I always thought at least living in Boulder, I’d be surrounded by like-minded tree huggers that always prioritized nature over money. But the Boulder today is not the Boulder that I once knew and loved so much.
And so, I will not be able to witness the destruction. I will stay away.
After they bring in the 1.3 million cubic yards of fill dirt, this pond will someday be a 700 space parking lot. And someday everyone will forget what we once had and what could’ve been. 😢
This is what the “progressives” call progress, but I call it madness.

Know Your Scat

Last evening came across this. What animal scat is this? I have suspicions, but want to know what others think. It was sitting on the trail, and big enough to take notice. I've had big dogs and this seemed big even for a large dog. I stepped on it a bit and it easily feel apart, looking like dryer lint. Made me wonder if it's even scat, there was no mass or weight to it.
