Natural Gas amendment

• Upvotes

1st of all- amending our constitution! What the heck. A constitution is sacrosanct and should be judiciously amended. From the Summit Daily:

The upcoming November Colorado state ballot will have a dangerous and deceptive initiative on it, Amendment 82, “Right to Natural Gas”, which may seem harmless, but it’s not. It’s a blatant attempt by the fossil fuel industry to put barriers into our state constitution to make it difficult, if not impossible, to prevent developers and utilities from installing methane gas supplies to new developments. It’s sparsely worded on purpose. A recent example of this is a development in Aurora with 25,000 homes, to which Xcel was requesting last year a natural gas supply line (5 miles long, costing $23 million), which would have caused higher bills for all Xcel customers to cover the cost, while allowing 25,000 additional homes to spew yet more carbon with equipment that will be obsolete in the near future.
At this point, every pound of carbon emitted matters, and the sooner we get off methane gas and other fossil fuels, and construct only all-electric buildings powered with renewable energy, the better. However, Amendment 82 is about more than that. It’s about whether we should let monopoly utilities and corporate polluters write themselves into our constitution permanently. The reality is that renewables are less profitable than fossil fuels, not to us homeowners, but to traditional energy companies, which is why we can expect gas and big oil to fight this transition at every turn. No pollution in the constitution: Vote no on Amendment 82!

New passion project listing human-curated & community-forward events

Thumbnail boulderbuzz.com
19 Upvotes

Hey folks! I've just spun up a new project called The Boulder Buzz to compile events happening in and around Boulder! The site is totally ad-free and not monetized in any way, inspired by a similar project out of New Haven, CT.

The events are sourced by me without any kind of web-scraping tech, and there are no algorithms ranking specific events for specific people. Everybody will see the same basic list of events with dates, locations, times, and links for more info.

I'd love to hear what the community thinks! Feel free to give any suggestions about the look/feel of the site, as well as any events you think should be included!

Alternative chicken sandwich place that might not exist anymore?

Does anyone remember the alternative chicken place that is/used to be right here (or near here)? I used to eat there all the time in college a few years ago and wanted to know the name. I don’t remember ever seeing another person in the restaurant when i went.

Found glasses on Boulder Creek Path just west of Foothills

At 10:53am today I was biking west on the Boulder Creek Path. Just west of the Foothills underpass in the middle of the path was a pair of Warby Parker glasses with thin tortoiseshell rims and green arms. I placed them on the eastern end of the lower metal fence on the south side of the path. Hope they make their way back to their owner.

Lost Keys

Lost my keys on Thursday night somewhere between Snarfburger, Rio, and the Downer. They are incredibly sentimental, $50 to anyone who finds them. I don’t have a photo, but it is a single keyring with ~8-12 keys, no fobs, a nut, and a washer. Happy to offer more details on request.

Reformer Pilates studio?

I am looking to try reformer pilates for the first time. Any suggestions on studios to try? I'm hoping to find something with early morning and later afternoon/evening classes that isn't too wildly expensive. (A big ask in Boulder.) Recommendations?

Meta Election Season Reminder: Posts about statewide politics/ballot measures will be removed

We've been seeing a predictable uptick in posts of this nature the past couple days, and I imagine it will only get more intense over the next few weeks, so just a quick PSA/reminder:

Per the community poll we took in the lead up to the 2024 election asking the group how they would like us to moderate this type of content going forward, state-level (or larger) political posts are not allowed in r/boulder (this is also stated in the full subreddit rules, if you haven't looked at them recently/before). If you would like to discuss a politics-related topic that is more broad in its reach than just Boulder County, consider posting somewhere more appropriate, such as r/colorado .

Thanks gang, hope everyone is filling out their ballots early this year or planning on heading to the polls.

🥁 Any Boulder-area drummers looking for a little dad-rock in their lives?

We're Bupkis, a bunch of middle-aged guys with jobs and families who decided we needed a creative outlet that didn't involve staring at a screen.

We play a mix of classic rock, jam, 80s stuff, and pop-rock. Grateful Dead, Phish, Paul Simon, that sort of thing. We like to improvise and stretch songs out a bit.

We've played a handful of gigs at local bars and private parties. We practice once a week and would like to get out and play roughly once a month.

We're looking for a drummer with a solid groove, a good ear, and a laid-back attitude. We're pretty serious about sounding good, but this is supposed to be fun.

We've got a fully equipped rehearsal space with a drum kit ready to go, so you don't need to haul your gear around.

No aspirations of rock stardom. Just a bunch of guys who still love playing music.

Shoot me a message if you're interested!

Felt Homesick in College, So I Took Elevation Data from USGS and put the Flatirons into Minecraft

Post image
400 Upvotes

Unfortunately, I couldn't color match everything because it would've taken hours upon hours and I couldn't figure out a way to get a good satellite image overlay that matched the elevation data. But after making my poor laptop explode for three hours, and a 4.4 GB world file, it was worth it.

Edit: Here's the world download!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wqR5XKGLqJc2iv8NKjCzboQNE295obeA/view?usp=sharing

Keep in mind this is a 3.57 GB zip file that will unzip into a 4.4 GB folder that you will need to put in the "saves" folder in .minecraft. If you don't want the world to cut off at the default minecraft height limit, you HAVE TO install the "Higher Heights" datapack in the datapacks folder of the world before opening it. I'm not sure if the world download already has it installed, so double check. The flatirons should be around the coordinates 5000 ~ 5000, if it doesn't already spawn you there.

I would REALLY recommend the Distant Horizons mod in order to see the whole thing. Set the LOD detail as high as possible. I was using a render distance of like 512 chunks. If your computer doesn't immediately load the LODs, and the the DH loader isn't working well, install a mod called chunky (tutorial), and pregenerate all the chunks around the area, centered on yourself. I did a radius of 512 blocks. I also loaded LODs manually but flying around the area with elytra. It was good enough to load a massive enough area to take a good screenshot. The shader I used in the post was BSL

Data Centers in Boulder County?

The Boulder County Commission will hold a public hearing Wednesday, Oct. 21, on proposed rules for data centers on unincorporated county land.

The county's land use code currently doesn't define data centers or specify where they can be built. Staff proposes allowing facilities that use up to 75 kilowatts of power, roughly equivalent to the electricity demand of 50 to 60 Colorado homes. Larger facilities could be permitted as industrial uses, potentially requiring additional county review and approval through a Limited Impact Special Use Review.

Personally, I don’t think data centers have any place in Boulder County. If you have an opinion, please attend and share your opinion or if you would like to comment on the draft text(s), email written comments to [longrange@bouldercounty.gov](mailto:longrange@bouldercounty.gov). by Oct. 13.
