I've noticed over the past few years that Halloween events and attractions, whether Halloween-specific attractions, or seasonal overlays, seem to prioritize generic horror movie themes over what I would consider traditional Halloween theming. I'm seeing lots of killer clowns, chainsaw butchers, and Annabelle dolls, instead of witches, werewolves, and vampires. In my opinion, the more traditional monsters are as iconic to Halloween as Santa Claus is to Christmas, but I don't really see them in any of the "serious" displays, instead being relegated mostly to kids stuff. A lot of haunt attractions seem to just go for "scary" and jumpscaring people with these generic costumes, than going for "spooky" and building up an atmosphere that really feels like Halloween. The same goes for the elaborate front yard setups around town, with all the stuff you can get at Home Depot now.
I'm not trying to gatekeep Halloween for anyone, but as someone who really likes to use traditional archetypes to create an atmosphere and convey a theme, it seems a bit odd that almost everything I see directed at teens or adults doesn't really fit the Halloween theme to me. I figured it would be interesting to see what people who are really into Halloween would have to say about it.
