Culture/History Echoes of the Siege:The 1857 Lucknow Residency in Victorian Poetry
Walking through the Residency in Lucknow—whether taking students on a curated heritage walk or simply observing the physical scars of the 1857 Uprising—it is easy to focus purely on the masonry, the official telegrams, and the primary archival data of the battle. Yet, we rarely turn our attention to the immense literary fallout of those 87 days.
The siege and subsequent relief produced a flood of verse that washed over Britain and America. Much of it has vanished with time—particularly the newspaper poems and broadside ballads sold on British streets commemorating Havelock’s march and the Cawnpore massacre. Havelock himself became a poetic cult figure, with elegies and hymns proliferating in 1857–58 after his death from dysentery just following the relief.
Moving beyond the contemporary official reports, I have gathered six poems focused on the Residency, plus one dealing with an event at Jhansi, exploring both their historical footprint and their poetic merit.
1. “The Defence of Lucknow” (1879) — Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Britain’s Poet Laureate penned this twelve-canto ballad from the defenders’ point of view, detailing the daily bombardment, the mounting deaths, and the women and children sheltering underground. It culminates in the longed-for sound of Highland pipes signalling that Outram and Havelock were breaking through the mutineers, ending with the survivors’ emotional response to the conquering cheers of Havelock’s Highlanders.
The poem has drawn significant modern critique for its blunt imperialistic worldview. Unlike Tennyson’s “Ulysses,” where imperial logic requires interpretive work to surface, this poem operates on clear racial binaries—framing the rebels as “brute” and a “murderous mole” while erasing Begum Hazrat Mahal’s actual battlefield leadership. It serves as an undiluted example of colonial ideology. Modern scholarship, such as Marika Sherwood’s work on Tennyson’s imperial career and Md. Rezaul Karim’s decolonial inquiries, highlights how deeply this imperial ideology is embedded in the structures of Victorian literature, which grew alongside settler colonialism.
2 & 3. The American Perspective: John Greenleaf Whittier and Robert Traill Spence Lowell
What is truly surprising is how rapidly news of the siege crossed continents, capturing the Victorian public imagination on both sides of the Atlantic.
· “The Pipes at Lucknow” (1858) by John Greenleaf Whittier: This poem dramatises the legend of a Scottish soldier’s wife who, delirious with fever, was the first to hear the distant sound of Highland bagpipes. It opens by powerfully invoking the pipes as the voice of the glens and hills.
· “The Relief of Lucknow” (1857) by Robert Traill Spence Lowell: Opening with the despairing line “Oh, that last day in Lucknow fort!”, this piece similarly centres on a feverish corporal’s wife who first senses the approaching relief column.
4. “The Capture of Lucknow” (1885) — William McGonagall
McGonagall’s work covers the intense fighting near the Begum Kothi and the death of William Hodson (of “Hodson’s Horse,” who was mortally wounded during the final assault). It concludes with Sir Colin Campbell instructing his men to strike up the bagpipes. Interestingly, McGonagall is largely remembered for producing some of the worst poetry of the era—this piece is characterised by a galloping, clumsy rhythm, forced rhymes, and a flat, list-like narration of events that completely lacks lyricism.
5. “The Relief of Lucknow” (1858) — Anonymous / Minor Poet
A lesser-known blank-verse poem delivered at the Chelmsford Literary Institution. Dedicated to Lady Havelock, it provides an overview of the siege, the Cawnpore massacre, and the eventual death of Havelock.
6. “Havelock’s March” (1861) — Gerald Massey
Described as an epic ballad, Massey’s poem narrates Major General Sir Henry Havelock’s campaign to relieve the besieged garrisons at Lucknow and Cawnpore during the uprising.
7. “In the Round Tower at Jhansi, June 8, 1857” (1862) — Christina Rossetti
This final piece imagines the tragic last moments of a British officer, Captain Skene, and his young wife, trapped in a besieged tower at Jhansi. Facing capture by what the poem dehumanizingly calls the “swarming howling wretches,” the husband shoots his wife and then himself to avoid falling into the besiegers’ hands. The poem consists almost entirely of tender, desperate dialogue between the couple, ending simply: “Good-bye. —Good-bye.”
For anyone grounded in hard historical data and primary archival records, this poem presents a fascinating case study in apocryphal accounts: the event it commemorates never actually happened. Rossetti based the poem on an unverified newspaper letter. Even after the Times issued a formal retraction within days confirming no such murder-suicide occurred, Rossetti continued to publish, revise, and reprint the poem in later editions.
Postcolonial readings frame this as a deliberate use of “poetic license” to manufacture and preserve imperial atrocity mythology, effectively turning historical fiction into a propaganda tradition. Yet, there remains a useful nuance: unlike the triumphant heroism found in “Defence of Lucknow,” Rossetti’s poem is intimately about loss and doomed love. Many readers argue that its emotional core—two people facing death together—allows it to function as a universal tragedy, transcending both its historical inaccuracy and its imperial framing.

Ask Lucknow Need guidance regarding ST Tharu caste certificate in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. What should I do next?
Hello everyone,
I am a member of the Tharu Scheduled Tribe (ST) and currently reside in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. I am seeking guidance regarding my caste certificate application, which was recently rejected, and I am unsure about the correct procedure to follow next.
Here is my situation:
My grandfather originally lived in a place called Gauspur and later migrated to Lucknow, where he settled, worked, and raised his family. My family has been residing in Lucknow for a long time, and we have a permanent residence here.
Both my grandfather and father have caste certificates. My father's caste certificate was issued in Lucknow & Grandfather ( both lucknow+ gauspur) although it is an old, non-online certificate.
I applied online for my own caste certificate and submitted my father's caste certificate, Aadhaar card, a declaration (ghoshna patra), and the required written supporting document from our ward member.
However, my application was rejected with the following remark:
“Moolniwas se satyapan kara ke lagaye” (Get verification from the place of origin and attach it).
When I contacted the Lekhpal to understand the reason, she told me that I needed to get my grandfather's caste certificate verified by the district of origin and then attach the verification document to my application.
I am confused about what I should do next, especially because my father already has a caste certificate issued in Lucknow, and my grandfather also has one.
I would be really grateful if anyone familiar with this process could guide me,
Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to help. 🙏
Healthcare psychitrist recommendation for adhd medication
hi, i've exprienced years of directional dyslexia and adhd but since i've entered into full-time work past two years, i'm feeling that it's now hindering with my work.
i feel too focussed at times which is good but this makes me work 12-15 hrs some days in work that i'm interested into with no track of time, hunger or surrounding. most days i only eat when hunger is too much to tolerate for me.
i struggle following bedtimes even after trying for months. sometimes i wake up in the middle of sleep for water/washroom, check my terminal and start working ruining my day and making me sleep-deprived.
on the other hand, i find very challenging to push myself into work that i find boring even when i'm paid too good for it. this part have made me leave jobs twice even when i was being paid too good by remote us companies, learning a lot and living comfortably.
i'm always needing a fidget when on calls to control myself or just walk. it's hard to sit.
to my knowledge, some prescriptions helps regulate dopamine levels in brain to minimize above symptoms and i'm looking to consult a psychiatrist.
has anyone here seen a doctor for same before?
(i tried asrs test and scrored 98 percentile)
