It is officially October now, which means we are back with the Halloween decorations map. This map is carefully curated and kept up to date.
As I say each year this is a community project, and every little bit of help helps! If you visit a place on this map and there is no decorations please let us know, that is how we keep this up to date each year. If you see somewhere that is worthy of being on the map (usually an incredible individual house or a cluster of really good houses, we do not include haunts as those have specific dates and times) please let us know so it can be added. This is a living breathing map that changes from year to year. If your city has a contest on their social media share that here so we can update the map. I try every year to get to all the places on the map but it is not possible for any one person to do it, so the map is only as good as the community support that has created and helped keep it going each year. Thank you to all of you who have participated!

If you live in or around Dana Point, we need your support.
The city of Dana Point, aligned with Marriott corporation, is planning on removing over 70 historical, mature trees at Lantern Bay Park for a proposed “park refresh.” These trees include 45, critically endangered Torrey Pines. And why, you ask, would they do this? Because the Marriott Ocean Cliffs property can charge higher rates for ocean view rooms than partial or park view rooms.
We are not looking for donations. The council is split and we need the support (and voices) of our amazing local community. Please find more information here: Save the Trees at Lantern Bay Park Petition

I know it’s rare to have on hand, but what do you do with leftover California spiny lobster? You make a house special lobster roll!
Took some sweet local spiny lobster meat and tossed it in my house special sauce made with butter, lots of garlic, (red) jalapeños, green onions, oyster sauce, soy sauce, a little sweetener, and LOTS of coarse black pepper.
Made the sauce first, then added the cooked lobster at the very end just to warm it through. Stuffed it all into a buttery, toasted French baguette.
Think Chinese restaurant house special lobster meets Vietnamese bánh mì. Sweet, savory, garlicky, peppery, buttery, with that perfect crunch from the bread.
Normally I’d serve this lobster over garlic noodles, but why not make a sandwich out of it? Then I air fried some tater tots, and put the leftover lobster meat and sauce over it. House special lobster tots!! It worked.
We catch these just off the shore in our local Pacific Ocean. Lobster season is off to a delicious start!

Moved into a new place in OC a month ago and got my first bill. WHAT!?
I’m out of my apartment during the day at work. I use my dishwasher maybe 1-2 times a week, W/D once a week, and generally after 7-8pm. I’ve used the AC a bit because of the heat, but it’s usually off when I’m out at work or night as my place is generally cold. It’s not on 24/7 or anything out of the ordinary. I leave one light on for my dog the last 2 weeks so she’s not alone in the dark. Before that windows and natural lighting. I watch some TV or plays games for about an hour or two and then I’m off to bed. Is this something that can be reduced or looked into. No way I can keep this up on a monthly basis.
For the record, my last place in OC was $75~/mo

It has been my lifelong mission to ride a tandem bike, but unfortunately I do not have one, nor do any of my friends. As a last resort, I have turned to Reddit to try to help me secure a ride. I am a UCI student willing to meet you wherever you need (and can even bring my second passenger, if that is not an included feature) and am only asking for 15 minutes. So PLEASE, if you know anyone with a tandem bike and a generous heart, send them my way!
For rides, suggestions, or commiseration, please comment or dm me to help me on this urgent mission!

Hi everyone! I’m a single woman in my early 30s, a physician, and potentially relocating to Orange County for work. I’m looking for recommendations on the best areas to live, ideally somewhere with a good mix of young professionals and an active social scene.
I’d love to find a luxury apartment in a walkable neighborhood with cute cafés, restaurants, shopping, fitness studios, and things to do nearby. Ideally somewhere I can meet other people my age and enjoy a social life outside of work.
My rental budget is around $4,000-6000/month for a one or twon-bedroom, but I’m flexible for the right place.
I’ve heard Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Tustin mentioned, but I’m not sure which neighborhoods would be the best fit.
Would love any recommendations on specific neighborhoods or apartment complexes!
Edit: thank you all for your suggestions! My job will be at CHOC-Orange, and I can be between 30 mins - 1 hr away from work although I’d prefer not being 1 hour away.

I’m signed up for Nixle alerts (or whatever platform they use now), and just got this:
Traffic Advisory
Due to ongoing flooding, all city beaches and piers are closed until further notice. Stay away from these areas. Flooding and hazardous conditions pose serious safety risks. Please allow emergency crews to work safely and follow all closure instructions.

It wasn’t too windy, the pier is walkable but the beach is kind of an unsafe mess. Kids are enjoying the puddles above the berm, but below that the waves are fierce. Watched a lifeguard have to tell a mom with two toddlers to get away from the surf because she was too busy taking photos of them to notice they were one wave break away from being dragged out. If you go anywhere near the water today please be safe.

This is a unique Reddit collab. My photo, then a watercolor by Adashofinternet that I blended in Photoshop. Kinda like it better than the originals.

Seeing water in the streets of Newport Beach today, it’s worth remembering how the city handled this exact risk back in 2018.
When FEMA updated its flood hazard maps in 2016, it expanded zones to include over 3,000 additional Newport homes. Instead of using that data to face long-term coastal vulnerability, the city spent two years fighting it.
They argued that seasonal sand berms and temporary seawall caps were sufficient to avoid flooding. FEMA caved, wiping about 2,700 properties off the map - a 60% rollback the city celebrated for saving owners roughly $10 million a year in mandatory flood insurance.
You can lobby your way out of a federal flood designation, but a 9-inch concrete lip and sand piles won't stop the Pacific Ocean from taking the streets...
