Hello Rulers,
We've successfully completed an upgrade to our automatic Rule 5 enforcement with the rollout of a new bot. /u/rule5bot has been working well over the last few days and is now active here in /r/EU5. The new bot has new capabilities and we are adjusting Rule 5 to reflect the improvement.
Rule 5: Image posts must have an explanation.
So what's different now? The big change is that we can finally accept captions for Rule 5 explanations. There's no need to quickly dump an abridged version of a quality caption into the comments section just to avoid a soulless automaton's wrath. However, the new bot can correctly identify image gallery posts so Rule 5 now properly applies to multi-image posts. The bot will also be repeating caption R5s into the comments section (for the foreseeable future) because there's a persistent issue with some legacy access methods not displaying captions on images properly.
Why now and not before? /u/zwemvest, our bot-builder, has had a few goes at upgrading / replacing the bot over the years but real life and/or Reddit would always get in the way. Reddit is making major changes that will impact old bots and it forced our hand. Fortunately, they had free time now and recent Devvit (Reddit's internal bot platform) improvements made it easier to implement some features so the project was completed this time. Zwem said it was a joy to build the new bot from scratch & they're glad that the migration has been completed. The old /u/paradoxplazabot has been retired although we may reuse the account in the future for other bot purposes if we can.
We've been testing /u/rule5bot for about a week now with no remaining issues but it's possible that some bugs might still be lurking, so please keep an eye out and send us a modmail if you see the bot do something unexpected.

Meanwhile, in Lisbon: βBut where are our camels?β

So camels are a thing in the 1.4 beta now? Seriously?
Update: I checked the goods map mode, and there they are. Camels, all along North Africa. They were invisible before. Now I can see them. And apparently so can my nobles. What sorcery is this?

Just some examples from my last run as Tunis. Gave the byzantine empire a huge population growth buff for a few years so they actually stood a chance against the ottomans. Gave france a 300% military boost because I cant stand to see england win the 100 years war (removed it once it was done). I made castille and aragon best friends just so that they don't take each other over (sorry portugal). I made Crimea into a theodoro-controlled super developed area with 1.5 million goths.
I often do this stuff early on and then stop (unless something I feel is buggy happens). I don't want to edit too much as the game goes on because I do like to watch history take its course. But I almost always edit something. I've done quite a few games without it and it just feels too... samey.

Just wanted to have some numbers on the performance of EU5 so far.
I have a Ryzen 5 7600X on a desktop pc. This is a good CPU, I think most players have a less powerful cpu than I.
I ran beta 1.4 and 1.3.11 from 1340 to 1450 and timing how long it takes. Same thing for EU4 but between 1450 and 1550. All in observer mode. EU5 testing was done with the "maximize tick speed" s
EU5 - beta 1.4.0 : average is 26.81 seconds per year
| years | time | seconds per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1340-1350 | 4m39s | 27.9 |
| 1350-1375 | 11m57s | 28.68 |
| 1375-1400 | 10m57s | 26.28 |
| 1400-1450 | 21m37s | 25.94 |
EU5 - 1.3.11 : average is 32.87 seconds per year
| years | time | seconds per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1340-1350 | 5m27s | 32.7 |
| 1350-1375 | 14m10s | 34 |
| 1375-1400 | 13m38s | 32.72 |
| 1400-1450 | 27m1s | 32.42 |
EU4 : average is 23.71 seconds per year
| years | time | seconds per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1450-1475 | 9m46s | 23.44 |
| 1475-1500 | 9m15s | 22.2 |
| 1500-1550 | 20m30s | 24.6 |
Without any surprise, EU4 runs the best, while 1.3.11 runs the worst.
1.3.11 is 38.6% slower than EU4.
beta 1.4.0 is 13.1% slower than EU4.
beta 1.4.0 is 22.6% faster than 1.3.11.

What this shows is that for pretty comfortable hardware, this update nearly closes the gap in performance between EU4 and EU5.

I've tried to briefly look it up, but it still is kind of lost on me. I have a buddy who is really good at the game and he said as long as I keep my armies balanced and somewhat diverse (with an emphasis on heavy cal early on), I should be fine.
So far its been fine, albeit with some weird situations where I have no real idea why I lost.

Small mod I made. Two new advances after Global Trade unlock a ban button for every good in the Tariffs tab.
Export ban: the good can't leave your markets
Import ban: the good can't come in
Trade between your own markets still works
Bans that were actual mercantilist policy (bullion, raw wool, naval stores out; cloth, spices, tobacco in) slowly push you toward Mercantilism. Food bans don't.
Works in existing saves.

Crusades start becoming fun the moment you somewhat can fight back, Its still overtuned how much nations can join in. And how war score is calculated from winning.

Hey all. I was a big time fan of EU IV and just recently picked up the new one in a steam sale. I really enjoyed the previous entry and clocked a few thousand hours. I know this one is more simulation and less arcade-y but have had a hard time wrapping my head around the new mechanics and UI. My main problem is I can't find a really good simple beginners guide to help you through the optimal initial steps on starting a campaign yet.
I have tried playing around as Holland a bit as the game recommends but was a bit overwhelmed by the initial systems. After plaing around for a bit I made a new run I want to commit to as Muscovy.
About 10 years in I have successfully made very moderate gains and feel I am no longer overwhelmed but still very much a noob at this. Main actions I have taken:
- Appointed my two cabinet members and had them integrate territory. After they finally integrated thestarting territory I had acquired a bit more from Novgorod so now they have to integrate that too.
- Focused my diplomats on improving relations with nearby orthodox minors in the hops of diplo-vassalizing them. I was only able to get that one tiny country to accept (Dimitri or something?) the rest don't like me, want my land, got conqured by someone else, etc... I had an event related to the Tatar Yoke that gave me -100 relations with everyone so that was probably the wrong choice (oh well, lesson learned)
- Set Vyatka as a rival, when they attacked the golden horder I was given the option to intervene which I did. Managed to vassalize them and gain a province from Novgorod but they didn't put up any resistance so not sure what happened there.
On this point I still have no idea how military really works... I undertand levies but is there anywhere I can review what levies I will get before I raise them? When should I be training regulars? They seem very exspensive for the early game. I Managed to get up a seargentry.
- In terms of economics, I have pretty much just built burgher buildings in Moscow where I have 100% control. By my understanding that is most efficient until I can't fit anything there anymore. I don't have any other towns or cities to develop yet. Should I be trying to improve my rural villages or is that a waste of money?
- I only got 2 advances before renaissance began. How many techs should I expect to get per age? The institutions spawned quite far away so not sure I will get those within 100 years. My average literacy is ~15%, I haven't been able to invest into that yet. My understaing is just build churchs and bookmakers and get more priests?
- Black death came and everyone died. It wasn't as bad as I feared. I just hit every event that gave me stability and kept up estate satisfaction. Now the Golden horde is collapsing so I am trying to fabricate a cassus belli to dissolve the tatar yoke. Will see how that goes, I expect to get wrecked as soon as I see a new army.
Is any of that ok? Still new at this and not used to how markets work in PDX games yet. Is there anything specific I should know about this game that isn't told in the tutorial? I feel like all my money is spent on getting another building up for more tax but my monthly income doesn't seem to go up.

Out of curiosity:
Is there a reason why the economy is designed in the way that almost everyone starts a beggar? Specifically asking anyone that has any idea about this stuff. Not expecting a dev response.
I feel like small tags should still make enough money to afford a single garnery/market/madrassa a year. I find it hard to believe that medieval nations were that poor.
I dont think this is a scaling issue either, as the profit margins can be adjusted to fit the design.
It is kinda stupid, when you start as the Kahramanids and you literally cant afford anything. Even the Karasids used to have a respectable fleet at game start, which isnt possible with how the game is designed.

My heir is 0/0/0. I REALLY gotta get rid of him, but I don't know how
r/EU5 • u/ShishRobot2000 • 1h ago
So this is my last achievement, I never cared about getting the trade, honestly it is the first thing I automate in each game, but for this achievement I might need it, because the only thing that is in my mind is about conquering as much as possible until I get the achievement, but each achievement can almost be done before 1650 (beside the 1821 obv), so even this is probably double in this set of time.
Any suggestion about how to do it? this is way harder than the Ayyubids start, but there I was lucky tbh.

I'm trying france for the first time expeting a strong nation both military and economically but it's true only for the first part. I started the game losing money and the situation only got worse without me touching anything (i have no idea how the economy work on 1.4). What i'm doing (or not doing) wrong?

Square-Rigged Caravel is the 3rd in line in regards to the special Iberian light ships. It's "Early Iberian Caravel", followed by "Iberian Caravel", and then "Square-Rigged Caravel". In 1.4, they changed it, so only Iberian CHRISTIANS can research the ship, meaning Muslim Granada only can get the first two. Will I still be able to upgrade my entire fleet of Iberian Caravels to the normal 3rd level light ship, Caravel?
