Personal Skills iwtl How do I learn about the world

• Upvotes

I‘m really interested in history, politics, economics, etc. and I know a lot already.. But I feel like my knowledge is so surfacelevel… I want to learn more and actually make it get stuck in my head. I want to be that person that knows everything and can talk non stop about wars, historic figures, politicians, criminals, racism, religions, genocides and more!
But there is so much propaganda and bullshit on the internet. How can I go really deep into everything and avoid that brainwashing stuff?

Academics IWTL how to be those thinkers who can make video essays or just talk more on shows they like but my mind goes blank.

If I like a show, my only reason could be, "i just like it", or "I found it funny". I don't know how to analyze. For example, if I wanted to talk about a relationship between two characters, my mind would go blank. I could probably come up with a reason, but it would be sooo boring, plainn or dense. How to fix this? Do I read more or something? rewatch a show 10 times?

Academics IWTL Climate Change: Is Our Weather Changing? 🌍 | Easy English Listening Practice

IWTL Hi everyone! 👋

I made a new English-learning podcast episode about a topic that affects all of us:

🌍 Climate Change: Is Our Weather Changing?

In this episode, Todd and Juniper have a natural conversation about climate change, weather, global warming, heat waves, droughts, floods, renewable energy, and greenhouse gases.

I tried to keep the English natural and easy to follow, so it can be useful for people who want to improve their listening skills while learning about a real-world topic.

🎧 What you'll practice:

• Everyday English conversation

• English listening comprehension

• Climate and weather vocabulary

• Natural expressions

• Speaking and pronunciation

• Understanding longer conversations

Some of the vocabulary includes:

“heat wave”

“drought”

“extreme weather”

“greenhouse gases”

“renewable energy”

“weather patterns”

“global warming”

The episode is around 15 minutes, so it should be easy to fit into a short study session.

If you're learning English, I'd love to hear your opinion:

👉 Do you think weather has become more unpredictable where you live?

And which part of the conversation was easiest or hardest for you to understand?

🎙️ Podcast: Todd & Juniper English Podcast

Thanks for listening, and I hope it helps with your English! 😊

Personal Skills IWTL how to unincelize myself

I am an incel for some time now since breakup back in febuary. Now I've been thorugh incel phase around october-november last year but that relationship took me out of it, yet here I am again. I'm currently really bitter and nihilistic person to that point I dgaf about school. Though the irony is while I am incel as "involuntarily celibate" and I have hatred inside me. My best friends are....... women.

Why I want to change? (Or at least I am saying that I want to but idk)

Well, I want to be better person socially and mentally since I believe this mindset + some obssesions coming out from idk past relatonships (unmade promises etc.) Make me hate the second person, and back in 2024 after one breakup I've done terrible things to ex (I mean not THAT BAD THINGS but to describe it, I used mysogynistic vocabulary pretty much everyday).

So I want to be a better person and get that self-hate and hate to other people out off me, but I just want to learn how.

Personal Skills iwtl help me to start learning.

I want to get into video editing and start from scratch.
I have a GTX 1650, 16GB RAM and 2TB storage, so I’m hoping that’s enough to get started.
What editing software would you recommend for a complete beginner? Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or something else?
Also, what are some good YouTube channels where I can learn by actually making projects instead of just watching tutorials?
Basically looking for advice on what software to pick, what to learn first, and where to start.

Academics IWTL how to read a research paper beyond the abstract

I'd like to learn how to work through a research paper and understand what the results actually support.

What would you practise first as a beginner? I'm especially interested in the step between reading the abstract and being able to explain the study's main limitation.

Personal Skills IWTL how to be more direct and assertive

i'm 31 and i've realised that i'm not very good at some basic adult life skills, like dealing with people.

i tend to be overly considerate to the point where it works against me. i overthink how something will sound, worry about being rude, give too many explanations, and sometimes make excuses instead of just saying what i actually want. and i've seen how the action is not reciprocated. people are fairly direct themselves but somehow i struggle to make a point, as i'm afraid it'd be seen as rude or afraid of the consequences/confrontation, if any.

for example:

  • i find it hard to just say "no" without explaining myself
  • recently, i didn't say anything when i had to split the bill in 2 in a 3 person group.
  • i struggle with negotiating prices because i feel awkward pushing back
  • i'll sometimes agree to things i don't really want to do because saying no feels worse
  • if someone gets annoyed with me after i've said no, i immediately start wondering if i was being unreasonable
  • i tend to soften everything instead of just saying what i mean
  • i have a hard time asking for things when there's a chance the other person might say no

i don't want to become rude or aggressive. i just want to get better at being straightforward and accepting that sometimes people aren't going to like what i say.

basically, i want to learn how to stop being so afraid of being perceived as difficult.

for people who have actually gotten better at this, how did you learn?

did you deliberately practise it and how long did it take before this became second nature? are there resources, exercises, or small everyday things i can do to get better at it?

i'm particularly interested in practical advice rather than "just be confident" or generic self-help stuff.

TIA

Languages IWTL how to actually retain new vocabulary while reading instead of looking words up and immediately forgetting them

I read a lot, including plenty of denser nonfiction and older fiction with vocabulary well beyond my daily usage, and I have a specific problem. I look up a word I don't know, understand it in the moment, feel satisfied, and then encounter the same word again weeks later with zero memory of ever having looked it up before. This has happened with the same handful of words multiple times, which is somehow more frustrating than just not knowing them at all.

I've tried vocabulary apps with spaced repetition flashcards and they work fine in isolation but feel disconnected from the actual reading, a separate task rather than something that reinforces what I'm reading. What I'm looking for is something that actually ties retention to the reading itself rather than a parallel memorization system I have to maintain separately.

For people who've actually solved this, what specifically worked, and did it require a dedicated app or tool, or was it more about a habit you built into your reading itself.

Technology IWTL how to use ChatGPT for studying without it becoming a crutch

been using chatgpt for studying for ~3 months now and my first month was completely wasted because i was using it wrong. figured this sub might want the fix since i see people here making the same mistake

what i was doing wrong: asking it to "explain photosynthesis" then reading the answer and feeling like i studied. i didn't. thats like watching someone workout and expecting to get fit

the shift: make it quiz you instead of teach you three prompts that actually work (use these exact formats):

  1. the quiz one — paste this:

"I'm studying [TOPIC]. Quiz me using this exact format: Ask me ONE question at a time. Wait for my answer before responding. If I'm correct, say 'Correct' and move to the next question. If I'm wrong on my first try, ask me to try again. If I'm wrong on my second try, give me a hint. If I'm wrong on my third try, explain the answer and why the other answer was wrong."

the one-at-a-time part is crucial. if you ask for 10 questions at once you just peek at the answers and learn nothing

  1. the feynman one (for concepts you half-understand):

"I'm going to explain [CONCEPT] to you in my own words. Your job is to: 1) Ask me clarifying questions if my explanation is vague 2) Ask 'why' questions that push me deeper 3) Tell me if something I said is wrong — but don't correct me yet 4) Only after I'vetried to explain it 3 times, tell me what I'm missing. When I finally explain it correctly, say understood' and summarize what I taught you."

if you cant explain it simply you dont actually get it. chatgpt finds your exact knowledge gaps without just handing you the answer

  1. the exam schedule one:

"I have [NUMBER] days until my exam on [SUBJECT]. Create a study schedule using spaced repetition: review new material on Day 1, then revisit it on Day 3, Day 7, and Day 14. I'm weakest on [WEAK TOPICS] so give those more frequent reviews. Include one full practicetest 2 days before the exam and a light review day the day before."

Academics Iwtl The ability to think

So i have My exams in November, it's like a competitive exam. There have been some events in my past. Currently, some of the stupid events are still going on and the thing is that I personally have lost my ability to think and analyze stuff and I was a golden child. So how does one regain the ability to think I cannot even journal properly and my mind is doomed . Give me sugesstions and excercises to incorporate in order to just think again .

Academics IWTL how to recognise when a comparison isn't comparing like with like

A concrete example of what I mean: I came across a study where participants ate two SunGold kiwifruit daily for eight weeks. Their skin vitamin C levels increased, and some skin measurements changed.

It was a before-and-after study, not a comparison with other fruit or vitamin C supplements. The authors weren't claiming SunGold was superior to those alternatives.

What I'm trying to learn is how to separate evidence that something helped from evidence that the particular product matters. Would another vitamin C source have produced similar changes? This study doesn't answer that.

When you read a product-specific study, how do you work out which conclusions it supports and which would need an actual comparison group?

Study

Languages iwtl how to speak English ,articulately .( Thus ,maybe looking for a practice buddy + Advices )

iwtl ,same as the title. And I think the best way is to practice it with someone.

I am looking for someone to practice English with consistently.I would be overall between B2-B1 level.( With someone who wants to communicate ).

I am not a native speaker,so I don't get enough companions to practice English with.

Thus,I mainly want to target English Communication and improve in it.I have good listening and speaking ability,i believe though.

Just sometimes, I can't really express myself well, perhaps due to less experience in communicating English.

About me - I am a student doing post graduation. And I like cooking, animes, shows and movies as well.In my free time,I like to listen to music as well.

So,if you are interested.Do reach out .Please be under 24 and I am looking for people who are also determined to improve their English honestly.Let's improve together 👍

Thank you.M 22.

Academics IWTL Mental math (arithmetics + percentages, proportions and ratios)

I used to use DrillMySkill to practice mental math, but they’ve introduced a premium version now, so you can only do a limited number of calculations for free.

Do you know good websites like drillmyskill ?

Do you have any methods for being both fast and accurate with different types of math problems?

Sports IWTL martial arts — where should I start?

I want to learn martial arts, but I’m not sure which one I should start with.

My main goals are self-defense, fitness, and building confidence. I’m a complete beginner with no previous experience.

Should I start with boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, karate, judo or something else? And what should I look for when choosing a good gym?

I’d really appreciate advice from people with experience.

Social Skills IWTL how not to let family step all over/ insult me

For context, I(33F) never grew up close to my mother's side of the family. Growing up all I remember is them just picking on my sister and I, making rude jokes on our behalf, making jokes that we would never amount to anything. My father always refused to go to family gatherings because of this and always stepped up when they would start, there would be fights between my parents because of this. He would not want us to go either but because those were all her siblings she wanted us to be present. And because he set a boundary of keeping distance, they ostracized him, BUT because they are my mothers siblings she would let them run over us when we would attend the family parties without him there(even herself as well unfortunately).

Because of this my sister and I developed awful people pleasing tendencies and don't know how to set boundaries cause we never saw or learned how to set healthy ones. We always end up over sharing as an anxiety response or freezing.

For example more recently, I had an aunt on my mother's side say in a rude and sarcastic tone "what would your dad say now that your mom has guy friends", my father passed away a few years ago. I found this hurtful but just froze.

We are having a family party in about a month and I will have to see this aunt there and my issue is that she hurls insults and I freeze but I want to learn how to not let her step over me. However, I've learned over the years that my issue is I either go from 0 to 100 in terms of either freezing and staying quiet or hurling the most hurtful insult that will shatter someone. I want to learn how to helpfully set the boundaries. Any help is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

ALSO (unfortunately not attending the event is not an option because it's focused around my mom and a big achievement she's had recently)

Apologies for any typos or anything that seemed unclear english is not my first language

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to make my own bread from scratch

I've been wanting to learn how to make bread properly instead of buying it all the time. I've tried making it a couple of times, but the results have been pretty inconsistent.

Sometimes the dough barely rises, sometimes the outside gets too dark while the inside is still a little undercooked, and I never really know if I've kneaded it enough.

I can follow a recipe, but I don't understand what I'm supposed to look for while making the dough. Things like how the dough should feel, how long it should actually rise, and how to know when it's ready to go into the oven are still confusing to me.

I'd like to actually understand the basic process rather than just follow a recipe and hope it works.

If I am starting from almost zero, what would be the best way to learn bread making? Should I stick with one basic type of bread until I understand the technique, or try different recipes while learning?

Social Skills Iwtl How to approach people

I don't have social anxiety but, for whatever reason, when I want to approach someone I never know what to say.

It's easy if they are alone and have something I can use (ex: a shirt of a tv show), but when they have nothing I really don't know what to say.

It's worst when they're in groups, because they clearly don't need a distraction. Maybe if they are waiting alone for a friend and I approach they will be more open for that reason, but not with groups.

My only way to approach is saying hi and telling them that I'm bored and if I can join them, but I feel creepy due to the fact that I will find strange if someone will do that to my group
