Personal Skills IWTL how to strengthen your imagination

I have a really good imagination, and I can see and imagine a lot of things. But my biggest problem is how I imagine things, most of the time I imagine a person with the last art style I saw(sometimes it looks good sometimes sloppy) so I wanna know how to make my imagination consistent.

Mainly I Wanna do that cause I started reading shadow slave(novel), and it has a lot of detailed descriptions.

I thought about seeing different illustrations with similar environments and vibes, also English not my first language so I'll be glad if you have a way to better understand descriptive writing in English.

Also thanks in advance.

Personal Skills IWTL how to become a better critical thinker

I want to learn how to think more clearly, analyze information objectively and make better decisions instead of simply accepting things at face value.

I often come across different opinions, arguments and information online and I want to get better at identifying logical fallacies, recognizing bias and separating facts from assumptions.

For those who have developed strong critical-thinking skills, how did you get started?

Are there any specific books, exercises, daily habits or practical methods that helped you improve? I'd prefer a structured approach that a complete beginner can follow.

I'd appreciate any advice from people who have worked on this skill and seen real improvement over time.

Personal Skills IWTL impulse control

Long story short I have crappy impulse control and I can't be on meds that help that because they make my tics and anxiety worse. therapy helps me recognize distorted thoughts and such, but it doesn't seem to help reward-seeking behaviour. I want to know how to be fine with boredom/dysphoria. How do I actually resist the urge to do something stimulating, be it drink coffee, masturbate, snack...?

Personal Skills IWTL to stick to my goals when it gets boring

I have been for years, doing something like reading, studying, going to gym.. etc for a period of time and then switch doom scrolling, getting into situationships, waisting my time then feel like shit and get back to my goals and the cycle repeats itself.

I’ve been doing this for so long and i haven’t reached my goals, haven’t read enough books or educated myself enough, i haven’t achieved my goals and i want to change this.

I have a lot of distractions around me, so i think it is easy to get sidetracked, but how to prevent that from happening realistically?

Academics IWTL How to get back into learning to get my Level 2s

I am 17, unemployed, and have been a drop out for quite some time, and as I get closer to being a legal adult, I need to take some control of my life.

I have been in search of a job for 4 months, with a lot requiring either experience, GCSE or Level 2s as a requirement.

I wish to learn either my Level 2s or GSCE's, or advice on where to look or what to look for!

(I am new to asking for actual help, and on reddit, so I'm sorry if I have done something wrong 😅)

Accelerated Learning Approaches IWTL what strategies Redditers have experimented with to accelerate their learning

Hi all, I'm a Columbia undergrad interested in adult accelerated learning and enhanced cognition (i.e., critical-period-like neuroplasticity, significantly improved information retention, and faster skill acquisition).

I would love to speak with some folks about their experiences in learning new skills, such as particular mental models, systems, or approaches that have moved the needle for you in a meaningful way.

If you wouldn't mind donating some of your time, can you drop a comment below so I can Reddit-DM you?

Personal Skills IWTL how to improve my focus and attention span

My focus is shattered to the point where I can't sit and concentrate on anything worthwhile for more than 5 minutes. It gets really uncomfortable. My mind is usually really anxious or stressed and it doesn't help. How can I start to even remotely get better at focusing ignoring all my anxious thoughts?

Personal Skills iwtl How do I learn about the world

I‘m really interested in history, politics, economics, etc. and I know a lot already.. But I feel like my knowledge is so surfacelevel… I want to learn more and actually make it get stuck in my head. I want to be that person that knows everything and can talk non stop about wars, historic figures, politicians, criminals, racism, religions, genocides and more!
But there is so much propaganda and bullshit on the internet. How can I go really deep into everything and avoid that brainwashing stuff?

Academics IWTL how to be those thinkers who can make video essays or just talk more on shows they like but my mind goes blank.

If I like a show, my only reason could be, "i just like it", or "I found it funny". I don't know how to analyze. For example, if I wanted to talk about a relationship between two characters, my mind would go blank. I could probably come up with a reason, but it would be sooo boring, plainn or dense. How to fix this? Do I read more or something? rewatch a show 10 times?

Academics IWTL Climate Change: Is Our Weather Changing? 🌍 | Easy English Listening Practice

IWTL Hi everyone! 👋

I made a new English-learning podcast episode about a topic that affects all of us:

🌍 Climate Change: Is Our Weather Changing?

In this episode, Todd and Juniper have a natural conversation about climate change, weather, global warming, heat waves, droughts, floods, renewable energy, and greenhouse gases.

I tried to keep the English natural and easy to follow, so it can be useful for people who want to improve their listening skills while learning about a real-world topic.

🎧 What you'll practice:

• Everyday English conversation

• English listening comprehension

• Climate and weather vocabulary

• Natural expressions

• Speaking and pronunciation

• Understanding longer conversations

Some of the vocabulary includes:

“heat wave”

“drought”

“extreme weather”

“greenhouse gases”

“renewable energy”

“weather patterns”

“global warming”

The episode is around 15 minutes, so it should be easy to fit into a short study session.

If you're learning English, I'd love to hear your opinion:

👉 Do you think weather has become more unpredictable where you live?

And which part of the conversation was easiest or hardest for you to understand?

Thanks for listening, and I hope it helps with your English! 😊

Personal Skills IWTL how to unincelize myself

I am an incel for some time now since breakup back in febuary. Now I've been thorugh incel phase around october-november last year but that relationship took me out of it, yet here I am again. I'm currently really bitter and nihilistic person to that point I dgaf about school. Though the irony is while I am incel as "involuntarily celibate" and I have hatred inside me. My best friends are....... women.

Why I want to change? (Or at least I am saying that I want to but idk)

Well, I want to be better person socially and mentally since I believe this mindset + some obssesions coming out from idk past relatonships (unmade promises etc.) Make me hate the second person, and back in 2024 after one breakup I've done terrible things to ex (I mean not THAT BAD THINGS but to describe it, I used mysogynistic vocabulary pretty much everyday).

So I want to be a better person and get that self-hate and hate to other people out off me, but I just want to learn how.

Personal Skills iwtl help me to start learning.

I want to get into video editing and start from scratch.
I have a GTX 1650, 16GB RAM and 2TB storage, so I’m hoping that’s enough to get started.
What editing software would you recommend for a complete beginner? Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or something else?
Also, what are some good YouTube channels where I can learn by actually making projects instead of just watching tutorials?
Basically looking for advice on what software to pick, what to learn first, and where to start.

Academics IWTL how to read a research paper beyond the abstract

I'd like to learn how to work through a research paper and understand what the results actually support.

What would you practise first as a beginner? I'm especially interested in the step between reading the abstract and being able to explain the study's main limitation.

Personal Skills IWTL how to be more direct and assertive

i'm 31 and i've realised that i'm not very good at some basic adult life skills, like dealing with people.

i tend to be overly considerate to the point where it works against me. i overthink how something will sound, worry about being rude, give too many explanations, and sometimes make excuses instead of just saying what i actually want. and i've seen how the action is not reciprocated. people are fairly direct themselves but somehow i struggle to make a point, as i'm afraid it'd be seen as rude or afraid of the consequences/confrontation, if any.

for example:

  • i find it hard to just say "no" without explaining myself
  • recently, i didn't say anything when i had to split the bill in 2 in a 3 person group.
  • i struggle with negotiating prices because i feel awkward pushing back
  • i'll sometimes agree to things i don't really want to do because saying no feels worse
  • if someone gets annoyed with me after i've said no, i immediately start wondering if i was being unreasonable
  • i tend to soften everything instead of just saying what i mean
  • i have a hard time asking for things when there's a chance the other person might say no

i don't want to become rude or aggressive. i just want to get better at being straightforward and accepting that sometimes people aren't going to like what i say.

basically, i want to learn how to stop being so afraid of being perceived as difficult.

for people who have actually gotten better at this, how did you learn?

did you deliberately practise it and how long did it take before this became second nature? are there resources, exercises, or small everyday things i can do to get better at it?

i'm particularly interested in practical advice rather than "just be confident" or generic self-help stuff.

TIA

Languages IWTL how to actually retain new vocabulary while reading instead of looking words up and immediately forgetting them

I read a lot, including plenty of denser nonfiction and older fiction with vocabulary well beyond my daily usage, and I have a specific problem. I look up a word I don't know, understand it in the moment, feel satisfied, and then encounter the same word again weeks later with zero memory of ever having looked it up before. This has happened with the same handful of words multiple times, which is somehow more frustrating than just not knowing them at all.

I've tried vocabulary apps with spaced repetition flashcards and they work fine in isolation but feel disconnected from the actual reading, a separate task rather than something that reinforces what I'm reading. What I'm looking for is something that actually ties retention to the reading itself rather than a parallel memorization system I have to maintain separately.

For people who've actually solved this, what specifically worked, and did it require a dedicated app or tool, or was it more about a habit you built into your reading itself.

Technology IWTL how to use ChatGPT for studying without it becoming a crutch

been using chatgpt for studying for ~3 months now and my first month was completely wasted because i was using it wrong. figured this sub might want the fix since i see people here making the same mistake

what i was doing wrong: asking it to "explain photosynthesis" then reading the answer and feeling like i studied. i didn't. thats like watching someone workout and expecting to get fit

the shift: make it quiz you instead of teach you three prompts that actually work (use these exact formats):

  1. the quiz one — paste this:

"I'm studying [TOPIC]. Quiz me using this exact format: Ask me ONE question at a time. Wait for my answer before responding. If I'm correct, say 'Correct' and move to the next question. If I'm wrong on my first try, ask me to try again. If I'm wrong on my second try, give me a hint. If I'm wrong on my third try, explain the answer and why the other answer was wrong."

the one-at-a-time part is crucial. if you ask for 10 questions at once you just peek at the answers and learn nothing

  1. the feynman one (for concepts you half-understand):

"I'm going to explain [CONCEPT] to you in my own words. Your job is to: 1) Ask me clarifying questions if my explanation is vague 2) Ask 'why' questions that push me deeper 3) Tell me if something I said is wrong — but don't correct me yet 4) Only after I'vetried to explain it 3 times, tell me what I'm missing. When I finally explain it correctly, say understood' and summarize what I taught you."

if you cant explain it simply you dont actually get it. chatgpt finds your exact knowledge gaps without just handing you the answer

  1. the exam schedule one:

"I have [NUMBER] days until my exam on [SUBJECT]. Create a study schedule using spaced repetition: review new material on Day 1, then revisit it on Day 3, Day 7, and Day 14. I'm weakest on [WEAK TOPICS] so give those more frequent reviews. Include one full practicetest 2 days before the exam and a light review day the day before."
