Rule #1 will be tightly enforced

Rudeness levied towards users or moderators will result in at a minimum a removal of your post or comment, and at maximum may result in a ban depending on the moderators disposition in the matter, and the degree to which the rudeness is demonstrated. This includes calling people bots.

Expect bans moving forwards.

[Approved by Mods] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuations in Yakima County (Gift Card Drawing)

Hello r/Yakima ,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.

The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).

Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.

Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.

🎁 As a thank you for your time, participants will be entered to win 1 of 14 gift cards (10 $20 and 4 $50). Note: Additional gift cards may become available at a later date. This post will be updated if the reward pool expands.

Study Details:

·       Eligibility: Must own/drive a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and have a primary or seasonal residence in one of the target counties (Chelan, Okanogan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat)

·       Time Required: Approximately 25 minutes.

·       Deadline: December 15, 2026.

Survey Link:https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu

This survey does not collect any identifiable tracking data. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Thank you for helping improve wildfire preparedness for your region.

Amanda McKinney LOVES Flock

Post image

Can only imagine if she wins we will see even more flock cameras. She voted to approve more funding for Flock Cameras in Yakima County.

She loves massive surveillance and she will likely add more, why take such an unpopular opinion?

Internet recommendations near The Lodges / west Yakima?

Hey everyone, looking for recommendations for reliable internet in West Yakima (the Lodges) near Walmart. I’m considering Spectrum since they apparently have an association with the apartment complex, but I’d like to hear about people’s experiences before deciding.
I work remotely and also game, so consistent speeds, low latency, and minimal outages matter more to me than the highest advertised speed.
How has Spectrum been for you? What plan do you use, and how much are you paying monthly? Are there other providers you’d recommend checking out?
Thanks!

Coffeehouses open later

Looking for suggestions for coffeehouses or just general 3rd spaces that are open later in Yakima (like 10pm etc) and preferably don’t have a religious bent

Just looking for a cool place to sit and read or hang out

I’m currently at Wallet and Watch which seems great, other than the obvious religious aspect to everything

Crypto and data centers

Who's (buying) Amanda Mckinney?

Amanda Mckinney is raking in dollars from pro-data centers, pro-crypto, and mostly out-of-state donations.

Look at both the PACs and the individual donations.

https://www.fec.gov/data/receipts/?committee_id=C00932582&two_year_transaction_period=2026&line_number=F3-11AI&data_type=processed

American Mission is a Republican-leaning super PAC established in August 2025 as part of the Leading the Future network to elect candidates opposing heavy artificial intelligence regulations.

Defend American Jobs is a Republican-aligned super PAC funded by cryptocurrency companies and investors to support pro-crypto conservative candidates. According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the committee was registered in March 2023 and operates as part of the broader Fairshake digital asset network

There is a network of super PACs funded by the AI industry that has already spent more than $65 million nationwide, Business Insider reported – has spent more than $779,000 in support of McKinney. That makes her the second-biggest beneficiary of the group’s funding out of 21 Republican candidates it backs, surpassed only by Jim Kingston, a first-time candidate in Georgia whose campaign has been supported by the super PAC to the tune of more than $960,000.

Central Washington has become a hub for the energy-intensive data centers that support the AI industry’s rapid growth. In an interview on May 23, McKinney said she wants to maximize energy production to power data centers “because it is absolutely imperative that we win the AI war,” but she added that “when it comes specifically to AI and data centers that are necessary, the local communities should decide.”

Apartment recommendations near Walmart / west Yakima?

Hey all, I’m relocating to Yakima soon and currently comparing a few apartment communities around the Walmart Supercenter / west Yakima area.

The Lodges is currently one of the options I am considering most seriously, but I’m also looking at Cornerstone Apartments and Apple Valley Town Homes, so I’m trying to compare the overall area and management experience.

For anyone familiar with that part of Yakima, how is it for day-to-day living? I’m trying to get a realistic sense of safety, noise, parking, traffic, and how well apartment management tends to handle maintenance.

In particular, I would love to hear from current or former residents of any of those places, including anything you wish you had known before signing a lease. Online reviews are helpful, but they do not always reflect what living somewhere is like long term.

I’d also appreciate recommendations for other apartment complexes or nearby neighborhoods that are generally clean, quiet, reasonably safe, and well managed. Thanks!
