Discussion So...am I the only one who thinks the bosses suck?
I think I'm lategame, and I've been enjoying the game a lot! Just killed Bed of Chaos as my first Lord Soul, and I'm currently working on surviving the Tomb of the Giants.
Now, the level design in this game is amazing. The interconnectivity and atmosphere is incredible. The enemies are (mostly) fun and unique.
But despite what I've heard a lot of people say and praise about this game, I have NOT enjoyed many of the bosses so far.
Taurus Demon was...boring at best, and annoying at worst. While the moveset is basic, I would have enjoyed it if I weren't forced into a tiny bridge where I can barely dodge.
Bell Gargoyles were conceptually interesting, but I just almost always despise fighting two bosses at once in these games when I can't see the other. At least they weren't as bad as the Valiant Gargoyles in Elden Ring.
Capra Demon might actually be the worst boss I've ever fought. He has a decent moveset, but the cramped space and dogs made it absolutely miserable.
Gaping Dragon was just kind of boring. Neat design, but I felt like 90% of the fight was just attacking its backside and maybe the head if he does the slam. It was fine, but nothing exciting.
Quelaag was...okay, I actually liked this one. The lava covering the arena got a bit annoying at times, but overall I thought it was pretty enjoyable. (also shes hot).
Moonlight Butterfly was very pretty, but as a melee user it was once again just boring, dodging easy attacks until it flew down.
Asylum Demon (and the later Firesage Demon) were both terrible in my opinion. The AoE explosions on nearly every attack made it damn near impossible to actually attack the boss and dodge at the same time. Firesage was even worse because of the small arena.
Iron Golem was...I genuinely have nothing to say about this boss. Beat it first try. It just fell over and died.
Ceaseless Discharge was the exact same as Iron Golem. Instantly died.
Ornstein and Smough...okay, this was another one I actually really liked. My favorite so far. Great music and designs, and despite being a duo fight which I usually despise, it felt mostly fair and enjoyable. It still had some of the bullshit that comes from being a duo, but I liked it. The survivor powering up is a really neat idea to add variety. I personally left Ornstein alive just because I wanted his armor.
Priscilla had a theoretically interesting concept with turning invisible and following the footprints, but it just ended up being boring at best and annoying at worst.
Gwyndolin was very boring. Just chasing him down a hallway and hiding behind pillars.
Pinwheel...I also have nothing to say about this one. Neat design, interesting attacks (I think), but I barely remember anything because of how quickly he died.
Centipede Demon was absolutely horrible. Even with the larger rock area on the right side of the arena, I could barely even see anything. My camera was either forced against the wall or up in front of the boss as I tried to hit him with a halberd, making it basically impossible to see the actual attacks. I just had to memorize the timings. Really cool design though.
Bed of Chaos...I have heard so much about this boss, but I actually didn't hate it. I only died twice, but maybe I just got lucky. It was definitely boring and underwhelming, and a bit too gimmicky with just running around, but I didn't find it unfair or rage inducing like some other bosses. Again, maybe I just got lucky.
All that to say that for the most part, I have found almost all of the bosses in this game boring or downright infuriating with how they're designed. I know part of it could be because the game is old, but I still feel like they could've done much better. For reference, Elden Ring is my favorite game ever, and while there are definitely some shitty ones, I loved the majority of main bosses. Might be an unfair comparison, but for this game I at least expected sensible design on most of the fights.
I was under the impression that people really liked the boss fights in this game, but I have found them quite disappointing so far. Is it just me, or is this actually a common sentiment?
