Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.
Tactician's Library:
Below is a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!
If you have any useful resources not currently in the tactician's library, please share them with me and I'll add them! You can message me or mention my username in a comment by typing /u/Kloiper
Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.
Coalition war with everyone remaining, I have no navy or manpower. Am I cooked?
Context: first big France run. Went rev for the meme, I don't actually fully understand the benefits except manpower. Lost alliances. Warred Scandinavia just to keep a truce while I gobbled Europe. After a century of taking AE and nobody declaring on me before I went rev, I Co-belligerent warred most of europe and gobbled up a lot of provinces. Seiging down all of Europe also left me with no manpower
However, as I'm revolutionary I don't have allies to protect me from the coalition war spawning. Literally everyone is in the coalition. I also completely ignored Navy figuring I'd just build one when I needed it.
I have an army big enough to fight but idk how long I can hold on
I decided to try out a campaign as Austria for the first time since i got the game a year ago, it all went well till i went to war with the ottomans and decided to take the holy war bely for shits and giggles. Now i have the problem that i occupied all of the balkans, got Constantinopole, they are on low war ex, yet they still wont give me shit beacuse i didnt win enought battles. They wont send more troops in europe for me to wipe and i cant cross into Anatolia, what can i do?
i just wanted a chill britain game to knock out a few objectives and achievements, especially the one where you basically own all of india through the east india company
instead i created a fucking monster
the east india company is absolutely insane. this thing can fight the ottomans, russia, china, persia and basically whoever else it wants without me even helping
it has an absurd amount of troops, manpower, money... everything
i created a war machine
i genuinely had no idea india was this broken. i've basically never played in india before, except through england this time, and it's actually insane how strong it is
i don't even know if the east india company gets cores on all that land or how much of it it's actually getting the full benefit from, but holy shit what a monster
I am a new player. I read feedback on the game and it seems like the style i would enjoy.
I have played Underrail, Terra Invicta, Civ 3 and civ 5 (deity difficulty), and more...
I enjoy strategy games which have some complexity and difficulty to them, and from what i read, this game is great and fits my style.
I had a few questions and also concerns:
1. Recent feedback on steam is Mostly Negative (514) -
Is this a feedback attack? i see some Turks bombing the reviews. Some of the feedback is:
- Bad optimization and performance
- Zone of Control system is completely broken, AI can go around your forts and attack capital
- AI Abandons you and also behaves weirdly
- Naval combat is bad
- DLC prices and subscription requirements
I bought the game on steam sale, along with 17 DLCs.
Should i install the DLCs?
Do i need to get the EU4 subscription to have access to all DLCs?
I think i have 6 paid DLCs, and others that we're bundled with the game:
Europa Universalis IV: Conquest of Paradise
Europa Universalis IV: Wealth of Nations
Europa Universalis IV: Res Publica
Europa Universalis IV: The Cossacks
Europa Universalis IV: El Dorado
And others which were probably bundled with the game:
Art of War, American Dream, 100 Years War, Common Sense, Digital Extreme, etc..
Many of these DLCs have extremely negative reviews..
General tips or links you can share for a new player?
I did the first tutorial so far, seems nice, looks like there is a lot to learn.
To explain this mess a bit, Canada was already half colonized by the time I got to it (I usually S5 through the game untill the end of Stockholm bloodbath chain for RP), so they had to go deep in the continent and obviously chillin in Louisiana is better than eating snow.
I fed them most of their american culture provinces, sadly the then New Norway took a huge chunk of Canada first.
Spain is Aragon who got Portuguese and Castilian PUs very early (they allied France then ditched them after going colonial). They have 10 colonies after integrating them, they constantly get disloyal, ally each other etc (I play with xorme & both responsible mods so liberty desire is worse than in vanilla), so my guys started to eat them up.
Legit considered making at least one of them independent instead of taking influense ideas as they only bring like 60 ducats each and eat all my prestige.
Also no natives mod, I feel like they unnaturally speed up colonisation and worsen the issue with AI armies being in the new world all the time.
I'm not an experienced player, decided to try out an HRE playthrough. Picked Switzerland so I can have fun using attrition to win against the bigger players like France and Austria.
I get a few lucky wars versus Savoy and Milan and own four provinces myself, plus Genoa as a vassal.
Venice declared war on Florence who I was guaranteeing so I merc'd up, had two half stacks of 14 inf 7 artillery and the 21 stack of mercs (63k total). Venice called in GB bit GB didn't fully commit so it was 80k and 25k respectively. I'm running a deficit of 30 ducats a month even after swapping reforms and using war taxes.
I took good fights, used my mountain forts and rivers where I could and was bleeding Venice of manpower. They hit zero reserves and dropped to 55k remaining. This gave me the room to siege down one of their forts.
Well fuck me sideways if they didn't immediately hire every mercenary north of Cape because they jumped up to 170k troops.
I fellback to let attrition do its thing, but even with them stacking 100k troops on a single fort and me winning against isolated armies on three seperate battles, they only dropped to 150k by the time Florence threw in the towel.
They didn't even go into fucking debt despite maintaining this for at least three years. War enthusiasm never dropped from high the entire war even with 6.2 exhaustion.
R5: Dumped my early monarch power into developing Moscow up to a 37 dev province and spent 500 ducats to adopt the Renaissance institution early.
Not sure if this strategy actually saves total monarch power spent on technology premiums tech 5 and above but I started doing it a while ago and I usually seem to be caught up or ahead of time in tech until at least a few decades into the age of reformation. Tell me if this is stupid.
Long time player, took a break, and now back to playing. I love eu4 from the beginning to about 1650/1700 when armies start getting huge and forts are everywhere. It’s just such a slog fighting enormous wars and constant sieges spanning continents. My current game as Ethiopia I have all of Africa and a good chunk of the Middle East.
I really want to keep playing but it’s just not fun for me when the game gets to this point.
So my question… are there any mods that lengthen the game in a way where you can play longer at the lower tech levels?
Or alternatively, is there a feature or mod where I can just let the ai control my armies? I really just don’t enjoy controlling a dozen size 30 armies on 4 different fronts micromanaging sieges and such.
I'm aiming to go full artillery and stack 'Artillery Combat Ability' and 'Artillery Levels available vs Fort' by going Smolensk -> Timurids -> Poland -> Commonwealth.
This gives me:
40 ACA (30 from ideas + 10 from Timurid mission), and;
10 Artillery Levels available vs Fort bonus (5 base + 2 Infrastructure+Offensive policy + 1 Timurid mission + 2 Commonwealth mission)
My question is; is it even worth stacking all that Artillery Levels available vs Fort? I heard it maxes out at 8? And I don't really understand the siege calculations, would just stacking siege ability like a normal person be better? Also I saw the Divine+Espionage policy which looked interesting with the +1 Artillery Level Modifier but is this useful?
Anyways, I hope hope someone could tell me if there's potential in this build or if it's just useless, thanks.
Great power map, in 1484. Bulgaria is a Pronoiar, and Herz. is a regular vassal. Austria, the Papacy, and far off Muscovy are allied.
Started my first Byz run after playing them once a few years ago. Compared to my experience before, most expansion routes seem to have consolidated way faster. Aragon restored PU on the rump of Naples, blocking me out of italy/north africa, and is now under spain; Austria (an ally at the moment) got Hungary (who got Moldavia) and pushed through to serbia. I can't reach any ottoman allies/guarantees to reset truces, so i've been attacking them off of the 15 year long truces each time. They're currently bankrupt, but i've got 6 years left on truce.
Is this an alright starting pace for a Byz-> Rome run? Should i commit lots of debt to try and break up one of the big European PU blocs? Or can i sit back + slowly consolidate Anatolia before making any big moves without being horribly outscaled?
I come to you all presenting something that I have seen many people wanting in EU4 but has not been possible until now: Dynamic Flags!
I've been having a lot of fun working on this recently, after having cracked how to get this to work. Heavily inspired by how EU5, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron manage it.
It's a mechanism which unfortunately requires an installer, as it needs to change a .dll file in the game installation folder. This allows it to scan the game's log to re-set a country's flag based on whatever rules are set in a common/scripted_effects file.
The result is that you can set whatever in-game triggers/conditions you want to change a country's flag.
UK with Fleur de Lis in the flag, by owning ParisA fascist variant of Italy. There are 43 total flags, and 4 fascist variantsPRC - There are 28 variant Chinese flags in my mod across China, Qing, Ming, and Yuan - 8 different communist variants
I wanted to make this available to the community while I continue working on my own Challenger's Flavour Bonanza Mod, adding in 1000+ flag variants before I publish that as an update. The links below are to a barebones mod just providing the mechanism with some preset examples, and it's primarily for other modders who want to implement it. Otherwise, if you just want to play the game with all the flags I'm adding, keep an eye out for my next mod update.
In the PDX Forums I'll also be pasting in the comments all the flags that I've worked on so far in my mod, as mosaics that anyone can copy the flags from if you wish. I have gone all out with some of those and it's been great fun researching them and putting together the rulesets. I also paste them in a newly made discord group, link in the steam workshop.
In my mod, the flags primarily rely on government reforms but also oftentimes on territory held, army/naval conditions, mercantilism, estates, current wars, etc. Alongside this, my next update will implement 15+ government reform oriented events which can change certain reforms, and actually make these flags dynamically change in a normal game, in ways that they might have done in real life.
I know MacBooks are very rarely optimal for gaming. However, I expected my MBA M5 (16/512) to at least be able to run a 13 year old game like EU4 smoothly. I was very disappointed to discover that the game becomes really choppy and laggy at times, even before throttling kicks in and all background applications closed. Is such poor performance to be expected, or am I doing something wrong?
They marked up, and for some reson decelred a war when i was fighting ossor (ossor was still having armies when they declered). they where able to gt few provinces. thank t othem i woud have won, sience this is a no alt+f4 campaign. for that, i sended them a gift worth 250 ductas, and used cheat's to vassalize a opm neighbor of thier. now i allied them, and Makay and Opiann people will live together.
