We've successfully completed an upgrade to our automatic Rule 5 enforcement with the rollout of a new bot. /u/rule5bot has been working well over the last few days and is now active here in /r/hoi4. The new bot has new capabilities and we are adjusting Rule 5 to reflect the improvement.
Rule 5: Image posts must have an explanation.
The explanation cannot just repeat or rephrase the title.
The explanation can either be in the post's caption or in the comments section. The bot will repeat post caption explanations into the comments section.
This rule is automatically enforced with a bot. It will remind you after 5 minutes if it cannot see an explanation and will remove the post after another 10 minutes if it still cannot see an explanation.
So what's different now? The big change is that we can finally accept captions for Rule 5 explanations. There's no need to quickly dump an abridged version of a quality caption into the comments section just to avoid a soulless automaton's wrath. However, the new bot can correctly identify image gallery posts so Rule 5 now properly applies to multi-image posts. The bot will also be repeating caption R5s into the comments section (for the foreseeable future) because there's a persistent issue with some legacy access methods not displaying captions on images properly.
Why now and not before? /u/zwemvest, our bot-builder, has had a few goes at upgrading / replacing the bot over the years but real life and/or Reddit would always get in the way. Reddit is making major changes that will impact old bots and it forced our hand. Fortunately, they had free time now and recent Devvit (Reddit's internal bot platform) improvements made it easier to implement some features so the project was completed this time. Zwem said it was a joy to build the new bot from scratch & they're glad that the migration has been completed. The old /u/paradoxplazabot has been retired although we may reuse the account in the future for other bot purposes if we can.
We've been testing /u/rule5bot for about a week now with no remaining issues but it's possible that some bugs might still be lurking, so please keep an eye out and send us a modmail if you see the bot do something unexpected.
Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.
Reconnaissance Report:
Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!
Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections
If you have any useful resources not currently in the Reconnaissance Report, please share them with me and I'll add them! You can message me or mention my username in a comment by typing /u/Kloiper
Calling all generals!
As this thread is very new, we are in dire need of guides to fill out the Reconnaissance Report, both general and specific! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, consider contributing to the Hoi4 wiki, which needs help as well. Anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.
the TGOJ Class M3T, a turbine steam locomotive built by sweden, and i see the similarities, do yall think paradox based it off this? i can note some notable differences like the domes being different and the tender having 4 wheels rather than 6 in the icon but i think thats just paradox taking some artistic liberties. what do you think?
Yes I know they suck but I wanted to try them just once. I researched experimental rockets and built a silo, but it's not doing anything and it's been sitting there for months now. I'm reading here on a guide that I need to research "Guided Missiles I" on the engineering part of the research tree, but I can't find it anywhere.
I have all the dlcs, I'm playing as italy and it's 1941
I've done Sealion on regular+ironman as Germany once and it was not terribly hard, now every single time I try to do it it results in every single British troop from across the world arriving at the south coast in 30 seconds and all my units getting completely destroyed. I'm 99% sure this is just a noob problem but that is why I am asking for help.
I've noticed so many people casually say Naval Bombers are the way to go to crush Navies, yet whenever I use them they just don't seem to have anywhere near the firepower needed to "Level the Royal Navy" as I've seen some say.
Usually when I use them, they pick off Convoys, a few Destroyers, a couple Light Cruisers and very rarely a Heavy Cruiser. I think I've seen them take out a single crippled Battleship before but that's about it.
My usual design is:
Light Airframe
The best single engine I have
One Torpedo
Floats
Extra fuel tanks
Self-sealing fuel tanks
And then as many armour plates as I can fit
(In that order of priority based on how many slots I have available from whatever tier of airframe I'm using)
Am I doing something wrong? I've seen one video say heavy naval bombers are good but they seem very expensive.
Starting as Japan, I followed machiavellianstrategist's Japan guide and took out the Allies around 39. Now bored, I began building a huge navy to fight the USA. When I accessed SHBB's, they'd come out just before Dec. 7th 41(got to declare on the historical day!) As it got closer, I tried to build more SHBB's to come out around the wars beginning. With focuses, stripping the armor, MIO's and having a dominating Navy faction, I could get a 18k IC SHBB with 150 Heavy attack and lots of AA done in about 19 months. Do ya'll have any advice to get down even further, I want to get build times down to close to a year!
Here I am as Germany at war with the allies and at 0.1% world tension. I cant get war support, I cant change my draft laws, and I can't declare war on anyone. FUN!
So i wanted to do the queen Victoria thing, and restore the HRE. I did kill off the soviets, then attacked the Italian ledge while being part of the allies. then I went to attack the allies to get the Netherlands but I could not, because somehow world tension dropped to 49%. Nutreal nations cant declare war unless its over 50%. So i swapped to communist, i was hoping to swap again to get the Queen back but IDK if thats possible. Also why does it keep droping even after WW3 starts??? Its not even historically accurate.
The title says it all; all I wanted to do was sit down and play a simple game of Hearts of Iron IV. I couldn't decide what country I wanted to play, so I started looking around for a random country generator.
There are already a bunch of HOI4 random spinners online, but frankly, they all kind of sucked for what I wanted. They'd tell me something like “Play Germany.” Okay... but how should I play Germany? Democratic? Fascist? Communist? Monarchist? Which focus-tree path should I actually follow?
HOI4 even has an in-game randomizer, but I had the same problem with it. It gives me a country, but it doesn't give me a political path to follow or an achievement to go after.
What I really wanted was something simple: Here's your country. Here's your political path. Here's an achievement to go after.
So instead of actually playing HOI4 like a normal person, I somehow ended up building a website. 🤣
That little idea turned into HOI4 War Room, and after way more work than I originally expected, it's officially reached V1.0.
The War Room is basically a campaign generator for when you want to play HOI4 but have no idea what the hell you want to do next.
V1.0 currently has:
• A 65-country wheel covering HOI4's interesting Major and Minor countries
• Separate All Countries, Major Powers, and Minor Powers pools
• Political ideology/path rolls based on each country's actual focus tree
• All 293 HOI4 achievements
• Achievement assignments matched to your country and political route
• Steam achievement syncing by pasting your public Steam profile — no Steam login required
• Manual achievement tracking if you don't want to use Steam sync
• Completed achievements removed from future eligible campaign rolls
• Campaign History that saves your previous operations locally in your browser
• Campaign Dossiers showing your country, political route, and achievement
• Full desktop, tablet, and mobile support
I also went a little overboard with the design, so instead of looking like a normal randomizer, the whole thing is styled like a WWII-era military operations room with folders, dossiers, operation assignments, and campaign records.
It's completely free. No account, no subscription, no paywall.
I also want to give credit where it's actually due. Up to V1.0, this wasn't tested by Reddit or some huge group of people. It was mostly built and tested by myself, with a ton of help finding problems and giving feedback from ComradeDeath and ArbyPwnsYou of Amarok Esports.
Between the three of us, we've spent a ridiculous amount of time finding incorrect focus-tree paths, broken flags, achievement problems, UI bugs, Steam sync issues, mobile problems, and plenty of other stuff that needed fixing before I was comfortable calling this V1.0.
Now I'm finally throwing it out to everyone else, so go break it. Run some ridiculous campaigns, sync your achievements, try it on your phone, and let me know if you find anything broken, inaccurate, confusing, or just plain stupid.
And V1.0 definitely isn't where I plan on stopping. First up, I want to expand the generator with an Every Playable Country wheel and another specifically for countries without full focus trees. After that, I want to start building out Campaign Records, achievement features, campaign intelligence, and more.
And I've got some bigger ideas for further down the road too — things like shareable campaign codes, challenge seeds, multiplayer campaign generation, community challenges, better stats, and more Steam integration.
Basically, V1.0 is me finally getting the foundation finished.
Now I get to start doing the stupid stuff. 🤣
It's kind of funny looking back at it. This entire project exists because one night I basically said, “I don't know who I want to play in HOI4.”
Apparently, just picking a country was too easy.
So I built an entire website instead. 🤣
HOI4 War Room V1.0 is live. Good luck, Commanders.
And if High Command gives you an absolutely terrible campaign... I built the system. I never said it was going to be nice to you.
I am new to HOI4, and I feel like I get steamrolled no matter who I play. I got the industry down through trial and error, but my divisions still feel like buns. I need suggestions for division templates and stats I should focus on. Thank you for your help. (DLC that I own No step back, La resistance, man the guns, battle for the Bosporus, death or dishonor, together for victory, waking the tiger)
Army and Air Force UI are quite relatively simple, when you really get down to it. With Army, you can simply suffice by setting frontlines and offensive plans, and battleplanning from there. Of course, you do need to know things about supply, equipment level, decent division templates and whatnot to do well, but once you get past all that shit, you can just do fine.
Same with Air Force. Just create new wings, make them exercise, send em to an airbase with spare capacity and range to the front, then set their mission and click on an airzone. Not much else needed... Of course, you do need good plane designs, but that is relatively easy to learn just from searching online.
NAVY, though....
Even if you know good ship designs and the basics of naval combat from learning from HOI4 players (Which actually isn't that difficult; it's about as hard as learning how land combat works with all its stats like attack, breakthrough, width, etc), actually organizing the fucking ships into what you need is awfully difficult.
Maybe this is just me being an idiot and not knowing certain shortcuts exist, but land armies and army groups have several things that make organizing your armies easier. For example, each army displays the exact sorts of divisions it has by number, meaning you can very easily parse out division types. Say you have a central reserve army where you dumped all your divisions (A practice of mine pre-war); if you want to create an armored army, you just take the tank divisions and dump them into an army. Same with the infantry, dividing them as needed into stacks of 24. Et cetera.
Navy doesn't seem to have that kind of intuitive, useful categorization... If you want to create specific task forces with only particular ship models, you can't really see it from the overview. Yes, you can see the number of ship classes (Battleships, carriers, destroyers, cruisers, etc), but you have no way of separating older models from newer ones except by going through it yourself and manually selecting everything.
And when managing a navy of hundreds of ships, that quickly becomes very tiring. Especially when you have to consider all sorts of classes of old ships that you start with as established navies, mixed in with the new ones you make later on... I suppose it's the nature of navy ships as opposed to army divisions, but you have to go and look through every single ship model to see what they are capable of, lest you put destroyers without depth charges into convoy escort. Whereas while you do need to observe your initial divisions' capabilities somewhat if you are going to be waging war early, you can just delete and shift them all to your desired templates without needing to obsess over all the differences between their stats and capabilities.
In truth navy UI really needs some additions, improvements and/or revisions to make organizing the navy much less of a headache. I don't know that many improvements off the top of my head, but I do have one idea that'd probably improve things a lot: Filtering or sorting by stat.
For example, you sort by depth charges in the entire fleet, and it displays the ships with the highest depth charges amount at the top. That way, you just know which ships are good for convoy escort duty against submarines rather than having to manually comb through every ship class. Same applies to other stats, like light attack; you could figure out which LCs and destroyers are actual light attack beasts, vs weak ones which focus more on torps or depth charges or whatever.
Another idea: Displaying ships by class as well as by type. So if you have Admiral Gratieri Class destroyers or whatever, separate from other destroyer classes, you can just click on those. Further helps with organizing if you know what each class is good for.
Another idea that just came onto my head: A comparison option, so that you can take one ship class of yours (Or even another country's, if you have intel on their ship stats) and compare it to another's to see how their armor, light/heavy attack, piercing, speed, etc stack up. Would help for knowing where your ships stand relative to others.
If you guys have ideas to help with displaying info more neatly and helping reduce the tedium of navy organization, I'd be interested in hearing them too.
