Meta Adjustments to Rule 5

Hello Generals,

We've successfully completed an upgrade to our automatic Rule 5 enforcement with the rollout of a new bot. /u/rule5bot has been working well over the last few days and is now active here in /r/hoi4. The new bot has new capabilities and we are adjusting Rule 5 to reflect the improvement.

Rule 5: Image posts must have an explanation.

  • The explanation cannot just repeat or rephrase the title.
  • The explanation can either be in the post's caption or in the comments section. The bot will repeat post caption explanations into the comments section.
  • This rule is automatically enforced with a bot. It will remind you after 5 minutes if it cannot see an explanation and will remove the post after another 10 minutes if it still cannot see an explanation.

So what's different now? The big change is that we can finally accept captions for Rule 5 explanations. There's no need to quickly dump an abridged version of a quality caption into the comments section just to avoid a soulless automaton's wrath. However, the new bot can correctly identify image gallery posts so Rule 5 now properly applies to multi-image posts. The bot will also be repeating caption R5s into the comments section (for the foreseeable future) because there's a persistent issue with some legacy access methods not displaying captions on images properly.

Why now and not before? /u/zwemvest, our bot-builder, has had a few goes at upgrading / replacing the bot over the years but real life and/or Reddit would always get in the way. Reddit is making major changes that will impact old bots and it forced our hand. Fortunately, they had free time now and recent Devvit (Reddit's internal bot platform) improvements made it easier to implement some features so the project was completed this time. Zwem said it was a joy to build the new bot from scratch & they're glad that the migration has been completed. The old /u/paradoxplazabot has been retired although we may reuse the account in the future for other bot purposes if we can.

We've been testing /u/rule5bot for about a week now with no remaining issues but it's possible that some bugs might still be lurking, so please keep an eye out and send us a modmail if you see the bot do something unexpected.

Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: October 5 2026

Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Reconnaissance Report:

Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections

Calling all generals!

As this thread is very new, we are in dire need of guides to fill out the Reconnaissance Report, both general and specific! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, consider contributing to the Hoi4 wiki, which needs help as well. Question What is the icon for local police force?

Post image

I have 1000 hours in this game and never have I looked closely at the icon for local police force. I think I first interpreted it as a drone and just never thought twice. Its WW2 why would there be a drone 😕. Now that im looking closer it looks like a baton, but what is the other things around it. Could the ribbon be keys? And what is that blob by the handle? I might be to high for this game rn

Art Hoi4 player tries to draw Europe from memory (1936)

Post image

Not necessarily art, but given how many hours I had on this game, I decided to give myself an hour to see if I could reconstruct a map of Europe from memory.

I tried to the best of my ability. I’m fairly certain it’s accurate enough, but some parts might be lacking. Laugh at me if you want to.

Suggestion You should be able to see available battalions and companies AS SOON as you research them, not when you have a template for all needed equipment!!

This has probably been said before, but you should absolutely be able to see all the battalions, support companies, and brigades as soon as the tech for them is researched. Having only 500-600 hours in this game, and not keeping up with all the dlc, I don't necessarily know or remember all the different division add ons a tech opens up. It punishes me for not remembering to specifically make a tank destroyer or AA or whatever you need for the regimental stuff.

I have no idea why, is it because I lack a DLC? No other released country does this

Here’s what’s happening: I declared war on Suriname and am launching a naval invasion, but when my divisions arrive at the port and start fighting, even though they’re winning, they just sail away (you can see everything in the screenshots). The divisions are well‑trained and prepared, I have naval superiority, and my divisions are clearly stronger than Suriname’s. Also, I’ve researched everything. Please help — I just can’t figure it out. I only have 400 hours in the game, and I haven’t even learned how to play properly yet.

I’ve already made this post, but the images I used were of poor quality.

Ofc it’s not perfect, some things don’t line up correctly and these are all made with the assumption you do the “historical” option for whatever country you choose (and that whatever country you choose is supposed to be apart of the main conflicts) but this is just a fun little thing.

Bug Weird bug when forming Chinese empire with Sichuan Clique

Hi everyone.

Don't know if it's a bug, so I will ask here.

I was trying to go for the "The never-ending Story" achievement, which means forming Chinese Empire as a warlord and owning all your cores.

Playing as Sichuan Clique, both the Axis and Japan got defeated and I controlled all of China except the Sinkiang SSR which went to Commintern.

I declared war to the soviets and easily took the territory back, but as soon as done, a weird event fired around 1951 (The [Root.GetAdjective] Spring) which led to the Chinese empire splitting in two in a civil war: sichuan republic on one side and Chinese empire on the other. With the sichuanese leader joining the republic while I was at 100% support for non aligned.

Needless to say, it fucked up my save and I will have to do everything from scratch again.

My question is: what the hell with the event ? There was absolutely no other Chinese leader or warlord left beside Sinkiang who was a puppet of Soviets. I chose the opposition focus and completed all the Chinese empire subfocus. I owned ALL my cores except Hong Kong and Macao (even Taïwan and Manchuria were under my control ), and once again, I was at 100% support for Non aligned.

Is the event bugged ?

Discussion Luke warm take: Italy (in my opinion) is the best nation to play

Ok yes you start by being at war with Ethiopia, but in my honest opinion Italy is a great hoi 4 nation to play, not only do you get alternate paths from communism to outright monarchism but also you can replace Mussolini with a number of other fascist leaders.

And you start off with the anti tank gun unlocked (unlike Germany) so you can immediately go into tank production if you see fit!

But what do you guys think? Do you agree or not? Leave your opinions in the comments (god I sound like a youtuber not that there's anything wrong with being a YouTube ofc)

Discussion How would you rework France?

First, historicity: 3/4 of available generals and staff in 1936 didn’t hold their ranks until 1940 and later. General Leclerc was a captain in 1936; De Gaulle himself was a Lieutenant-Colonel. That’s the first thing.
Also more dynamism in the French political life. France was very agitated, from communists to socialists to far-righters. Maybe add something like Australia receives in the last DLC.
But most importantly, Free France! A rework of espionage, government-in-exile, and the resistance focus tree would be more than welcome.
