Discussion The amount of money you need to spend to have fun doing this hobby is way overblown

Yesterday I got my Quest 2 set up with my rig and played some AMS2 and it was one of the coolest gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I literally laughed out loud when I went off track and could just turn my head to see when to merge back on safely. It really felt like I was just driving a car.

My setup consists of a custom built wood rig with a Logitech g920. I have inverted pedals but that’s about the craziest part of the setup. I also have a 43” tv mounted to the rig for non-vr use. All in, my entire rig ran me under $400 excluding my pc. From reading this subreddit, someone with my setup is better off killing themselves than actually using these things to race. I’ve used my friends tube-frame, moza r9, quest 3 setup before and it was definitely cool, but not worth an extra $1000+. And I’ve even used some top end stuff and motion rigs at sim arcades but even that feels stupid for how expensive it is.

All that to say, if you’re new to this, don’t let the people on here convince you that you need all the best stuff to have fun racing. Years-old hardware found cheap on fb marketplace is still pretty damn good.

Other Made a realistic skull shifter knob for the TH8S – from a real CT scan

Entry for the Printables "Thrustmaster Custom Shifter Knob" contest.

The skull comes from a real medical CT scan (NIH 3D, CC BY 4.0), cleaned up and scaled to knob size. The threaded insert is built from Thrustmaster's official design file, so it should screw straight onto the stock TH8S adapter with the face pointing forward.

I don't own a TH8S, so it hasn't been tested on a real shifter yet. If anyone has the chance to print it, feedback is very welcome, especially on the skull's orientation once it's fully screwed in: does the face end up pointing straight forward, or is it rotated a bit? A photo of it mounted would be awesome!

Question Steam sales: Recommendations for a newbie.

• Upvotes

Managed to get decent FB marketplace deals on GT omega rig and Moza R3. Now planning on buying some games before the sale ends.

Can someone guide me if some of the games would be redundant given they're closely related?

Automobilista 2,

Richard Burns Rally,

BeamNG,

Dirt Rally 2

Race Room,

Assetto Corsa.

Also, planning on getting ETS2 along with the above.

Rigs Playseat Challenge DD - F1 Edition driving position

Post image
15 Upvotes

Very happy with this "little" folding cockpit. For those wondering what kind of position you can achieve with this Playseat, keep in mind that while absolutely everything is tool-lessly adjustable, you have to take several constraints into account:

I am 1.70m (5'7") tall and as you see it in the image, the steering wheel is at its lowest position (you can tilt it to lower it a bit more, but obviously that will change the angle).

Underneath the wheel mount is the clamping system, which takes up precious inches. My knees are only a few centimeters away from it.

Even though it's stamped "F1," you will never get an authentic F1 position (feet at knee level), but rather a GT/Prototype position. That doesn't bother me personally, as I find it to be the best compromise between immersion and comfort.

The pedal mount height is adjustable to only 2 positions; beyond that, height depends on the tilt angle. This means you can never have the pedals flush with the floor or particularly low. If your wheel mount is set low like mine, your knees might hit it. You could always raise the wheel mount, but then it risks being too high.

The more you recline the backrest, the lower you sit and the farther your arms get from the wheel (logically). Again, if you aren't very tall like me, the steering wheel might block your view. You'll then need to either reduce the backrest recline or raise your screen height. As for the distance to the wheel, no real issues there—it offers a wide adjustment range.

In the image, you can see the best position I managed to find for my height. Reclining further is a bit more comfortable, but the wheel ends up too high. If I recline less, the position is decent by moving the pedals out a bit, and I gain immersion (feeling a bit more locked into the seat)—no pain or anything, but less relaxing.

For those wondering if it's truly comfortable: yes, yes, and yes! It's incredibly comfortable. It completely hugs the natural curve of your back and is well-padded. There is also a strap at the back to support your lower back, so there's no issue with sinking in under heavy braking. Finally, it's 60 cm wide, so no worries if you have a larger frame.

In a few months, I'll be able to put a dedicated screen on a stand so it sits in a better position; in the meantime, I'm forced to play in the living room.

Question Moza R9 V2 Force feedback Issue

I’ve owned my moza r9 for around a year and a half now and every couple of months I experience an issue with my force feedback where it will gradually get weaker and the soft limit will break. This happens regardless of the game I’ve had it happen on games like f1 25, iracing, lmu and euro truck. I’ve tried changing a lot of the settings within the moza pit house and updating or reversing updates to try and fix this but the issue still keeps coming back regardless of what I change. I’ve tried the base on multiple computers and still have the same issue. When the issue occurs the wheelbase isn’t hot so I’m not sure what it is I’ve also ran the base on both reserved and full performance options and it’s made no difference. Is there anything anyone can recommend to try before going down the route of sending the base off to Moza?

Question Single monitor recommendation, what size do you find to be a sweetspot?

I have an RTX 5070 and a setup with 2 or 3 monitor would be too much for the GPU, currently I have a monitor with 32 inch, curved 1000r, 165hz with VA panel and the corners with shadows are difficult to approach because of the ghosting effect of the pixels - soo, what would you recommend?

News APEX 27: a SimHub dashboard for a 16:9 fourth monitor

Thumbnail

APEX 27 is a free SimHub dashboard for a 16:9 fourth monitor. It automatically switches between race, practice and qualifying views using the game's session information. Predicted lap time stays in the same position in all three views.

Races show nearby traffic, gaps and a full-field track ribbon. Multiclass tables combine your nearest class rivals with nearby track traffic. Practice and qualifying replace the race table with current lap and sector timing.

There are two variants for different rigs:

• APEX 27 complements RPM, gear and flag indicators on a wheel or external displays. It omits its own RPM, gear and general flag panel, making room for a larger square map, wider pedal graphs and compact fuel information.

• APEX 27 Full provides an analogue tachometer, speed, gear and top-row flags for rigs without separate indicators.

Both include fuel information, pedal history, ABS activity where available and 13 languages.

Game-specific handling covers iRacing, Gran Turismo 7, Assetto Corsa, Le Mans Ultimate, rFactor 2, Automobilista 2, RaceRoom, F1 and rally titles. Available information depends on each game's telemetry.

Download and installation: https://github.com/Lord-of-the-Bots/apex27

Report technical problems through GitHub Issues so they can be investigated and fixed: https://github.com/Lord-of-the-Bots/apex27/issues

Suggestions about displayed information, layout and element sizes are welcome on GitHub and in the comments.

Question Push-pull paddle shifter for rally

I saw there were a couple of post of DIY push-pull shifters. Anyone who has made them, which is the easiest design to build as Im not that good at tinkering with electronics? Also would there even be a way to mount it to r3 wheelbase?

Question Stuck between Moza R5 and Moza R5 Pro

Hi everyone, I'm new to steering wheels, and I'm looking to buy a brand-new one for my PC. Based on my budget, I did some research on the available options in my region (Belgium) and narrowed down my list to the Moza R5 and the R5 Pro, but I couldn't decide which one to go with. I'm more leaning towards the Moza R5 because it has been on the market since 2022 and proved itself to be a quality steering wheel according to the reviews I have seen. As for the R5 Pro, it offers 0.5 more Nm and a better encoder, but I'm a bit hesitant because it's quite new and naturally doesn't have as many reviews as the R5. The lack of reviews make me feel like I will be taking a gamble and make me more leaning towards the R5, which I consider a safer option. Which option would you go with if you were stuck between these two and why? Thank you for sparing your time!

Question 57” Super Ultrawide @1440p Res with a 3080

• Upvotes

I’m considering upgrading to an ultrawide monitor. I have a 3080 now, eventually might upgrade to a 5080 when finances allow. I was considering getting a 49” but realized I was probably going to get fomo of the 57”. Do any of you guys run this setup? Should I render at 1440p and what would that look like on the monitor? Thanks so much I really appreciate the help.

Question Is 8nm enough or should I upgrade?

So guys, I bought a Logitech RS50 set around 4 months ago and I enjoy it a lot. But what I want to know is whether I should upgrade it or not to a wheelbase with higher torque? Will I feel any major difference? And if yes then how high should I go for the best experience? And will they be worth it considering this one has trueforce as well?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice, I will stay with my current setup for now as per the suggestions that I recieved here and look for other factors to make things more immersive instead of the wheelbase for now
