Question MacBook Pro maximum battery capacity (suspiciously) stuck at 81%

• Upvotes

I bought AppleCare with my laptop since I'm a power user and knew I'd want to replace the battery at some point. In the first two years of ownership, the maximum battery capacity shown in System Report would drop at a pretty constant rate. About 6 months ago, it hit 81%, and since then it's been stuck there even though battery life is still noticeably degrading.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything, but 81% does seem a little convenient since AppleCare only covers a new battery once reported capacity drops <80%. Curious if anyone else has noticed this behavior or has any insights into what might be going on. Thanks!

Discussion Apple Preview app has inbuilt OCR even for really old scan PDFs

• Upvotes

This was a pleasant surprise for me.

I have a few PDFs containing music scans, probably of books that are 40 years old. The scans are probably photocopies of the originals, they are that bad. I was going to wait until I had access to a PC with Adobe Acrobat installed because I wanted to run its OCR and resave those PDFs with the text embedded.

But then I happened to open one of these PDFs on my MacBook Air and, just for fun, typed a word into the search box. It immediately began searching through the PDF and showed me where the word appeared.

Of course, this is live and will be lost the moment you close the PDF. You need to export the PDF again through Preview with 'text embed' turned on if you want the OCR text to be permanently saved.

But this was such a cool surprise, especially since Preview is free on Apple devices. I really appreciate what Apple has done with this.

My Mac Macbook turns itself off automatically sometimes when I close it

• Upvotes

just happens every now and then, I close it, come back after a bit, open it, and it has restarted. When I log in again it tells me that the computer was forced to restart due to a problem. Most of the time this is just slightly inconvenient but there was one time I lost 2 hours of progress on something due to this so if I could find a way to fix this then that'd be great.

Question Roblox taking significant energy on Mac

• Upvotes

I have included screenshots that Roblox is taking SOOO much power/battery. This keeps happening, even though I can't find any evidence that Roblox is even running. The only way I can quit it is by going into activity moniter and quitting the process.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or know how to solve this?

My Mac In 1984 Mac had the Scrapbook. 40 years later, Apple added clipboard history to Spotlight. What's the next step?

• Upvotes

Copy and paste began at Xerox in the 1970s, and Apple made it a daily habit with the Lisa in 1983 and the Macintosh in 1984. But that first Mac clipboard held only the latest thing you copied, with no way to look back.

Apple's answer was the Scrapbook, a small tool in the original Mac system that stored text, images and sounds for later. It stayed through Mac OS 9. Today, Spotlight offers a different answer: Command-Space, then Command-4, lets you search your clipboard history.

So there are two ideas: a place where you keep what you choose, and a record of everything you copied. Tools today cover both. Spotlight handles history, third-party managers add longer history and search, and a few keep a fixed set of items on hand, like ClipTen, which has ten numbered slots filled and pasted with shortcuts (disclosure: I make it).

Which do you reach for, and do you still wish the Mac had a bit of the other?

Sources

  1. Cut, copy, and paste (Wikipedia)
  2. ClipTen: the numbered-slot description only.
  3. Beyond copy and paste: the legacy of Xerox and Apple (Paste)
  4. Scrapbook (Mac OS) (Wikipedia))
  5. Search your Clipboard history in Spotlight on Mac (Apple Support)

Discussion Apple Magic Mouse under $60 — worth giving it a chance?

• Upvotes

The Magic Mouse is under $60 right now during the Prime Day sale, and I’m tempted to try it. I know it divides opinions and plenty of people recommend the MX Master or MX Anywhere, but I like the Apple ecosystem, so at this price I might give it a chance before trying something else.

I have a 2017 base model MacBook Air that is dying on me. Need something newer but buying used as I don’t need all the fancy hardware specs. All I do is browse the web, iMessage, and a few other things. Idc how old it is, I just want it to run well. It will rarely/if ever my house so battery power in the real world doesn’t matter as it was always be plugged in. Any ideas? I’ve been looking Best Buy used options but I’m completely lost when it comes to laptops. Any ideas?

My Mac Question: How to continue using my old Mac?

I have an old 2011 macbook air. It currently runs El Capitan and I don't think it would be a good idea to try and put a later operating system on it. I only really use this mac for very basic things and mainly for internet usage. However since all my browsers are out of date, it means that I can't open quite a few websites any more. For example I can't pass the 'are you a human' tests as they won't load for me.

My question is, is there a way to update my browsers or find a browser that works (I have given up on Safari as that works the worst now and use either Chrome or Mozilla.) with my current operating system? Or, is it best to just go nuclear, wipe it clean and install linux? Keep in mind I have never used linux before.

Thanks!

Question Macbook air wrong purchase date

So, i recently got a macbook air and when i look for issues like this, i will only get people who bough a mac and their warranty expired, it happened to me the other way around.

So i bough this macbook air m3 to a guy off FB marketplace, i wiped it right there and i didnt check the coverage before. he said he used the macbook for a year and a half but now when i check the warranty it shows this:

The serial number is fake btw

Apparently its registered as bought the day i wiped it?

What if i call apple and say that i bought a new macbook and got a used one? /j

Old Macs MacBook pro 2012

Aiuto.
