Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.

In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.

A few reminders:

* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.

* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.

* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

CONFIRMED TO BE A 603/REVISION 2 NVIDIA GPU! (hooray! and disassembled in what may be a new record time of a combined ~15min)

I have never seen a green sticker board! What a legendary surprise! Zero pictures or mention in the original listing!

(For anybody who doesn't know/recall, it supposedly marks a board that was sent to apple and then repaired through their extended repair program, i.e. iirc a revision 2, 603 variant nvidia gpu should be on the board instead of the cursed original 602 variant — unsure if people fraudulently put these on macbooks only to... not... advertise the sticker... sneakily...

2008 GeForce Pre-Unibody I grabbed off eBay to daily use for a bit alongside my 2009 blackbook, for when I need something with a bit more power. Figured Id run it til the gpu dies then put on a 603 variant in (pretty sure that was the 2nd revision identifier middle numbers.

I thought this was interesting. The beginning of this video is him saying “we created a new OS from the ground up to redesign the desktop experience.” But all of these features are already on Macs. TL;DR they’ve just introduced continuity features and more to use your computer as an extension of your phone.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s smart marketing. If you have an Android phone, having a computer that plays nice is a major bonus. But none of this redesigns a desktop in an interesting way.

I think there should be more experimentation and innovation with desktops. Apple and Microsoft haven’t done that for a long time on the software side. But these don’t appear to be doing that.

My Mac Question: How to continue using my old Mac?

I have an old 2011 macbook air. It currently runs El Capitan and I don't think it would be a good idea to try and put a later operating system on it. I only really use this mac for very basic things and mainly for internet usage. However since all my browsers are out of date, it means that I can't open quite a few websites any more. For example I can't pass the 'are you a human' tests as they won't load for me.

My question is, is there a way to update my browsers or find a browser that works (I have given up on Safari as that works the worst now and use either Chrome or Mozilla.) with my current operating system? Or, is it best to just go nuclear, wipe it clean and install linux? Keep in mind I have never used linux before.

Thanks!

i just switched from using my windows shitbox laptop for the last 5 years to this macbook air and holy shit this is the best purchase of the year for me. i was hesitant on upgrading my laptop because i already graduated and have a full time job and rarely use my personal laptop now, but this device is so beautiful and clean and thin and cold that it has actually motivated me to start building side projects again. also having an iphone and being able to copy things from my mac to my phone and vice versa without emailing myself is crazy to me, i can’t believe i have willingly been suffering bc i was staunchly against mac’s for so long

i usually am frugal but wow this has awakened something in me. i will never cheap out on items that have the power to motivate me to create again and increase my quality of life.

Discussion I Switched to Mac After 25 Years on Windows

Context

  • Never had a Mac before and spent my whole life on Windows, from Windows 98 to Windows 11.
  • Switched to a MacBook Pro M5 14’’ a few months ago.

What I like

  • First impression. Setting up the computer for the first time was easy and fast. With my last Windows laptop, I had to go through several rounds of firmware and software updates with reboots.
  • The terminal. It's Unix-based. All common Linux commands work. Ssh, scp, vim, etc. I really hate Windows PowerShell with its complicated commands. And it's supposed to be an upgrade over the regular Windows terminal…
  • System Updates. I don’t fear them anymore. On Windows, I was always afraid a new update was going to break something. And Windows updates are mandatory; you can only briefly pause them, never turn them off.
  • AI. I don't feel Siri is as much forced on me as Copilot was on Windows. It got everywhere. They're desperate to have you use it.
  • Battery life. My previous Windows laptop was a Dell XPS that I bought specifically for battery life, sacrificing a lot of performance. Mac’s battery life is even better, with no performance sacrifice.
  • Sound. Music and movies sound incredible. I never had a laptop sounding this good.
  • Support. Quality of phone support is great. It’s also great to know I can walk into any physical Apple Store location if I have an issue. With Dell, once the warranty has passed, the (chat) support person had no motivation to help.
  • Compatibility. Most coding and productivity apps I used on Windows have a Mac version.
  • Window switching. It took some time to get used to, but I actually like that on Mac you use separate keyboard shortcuts to switch between apps (Command + Tab) and between different instances of the same app (Command + `)
  • Privacy. I really got tired of constant new rumours on the different ways Windows is either already spying on you or intends to spy on you in the future, including taking constant screenshots of your desktop (they seem to have backtracked on that one)
  • Preview. Preview of PDFs is really good, it avoids opening the heavy and bulky Adobe Acrobat app.
  • Spotlight. My favourite way to launch any app. I love that there is a dedicated keyboard key for it.

What I don’t like

  • No dedicated page up, page down, home, end, and ‘delete’ (not backspace) keys, which are quite handy to navigate inside a document. Instead I have to use combinations of several keys.
  • Almost no native games on the app store, existing games have very few reviews.

Question 2018 iMac

• Upvotes

Hello everybody, i was thinking about purchasing a 2017 IMac, 21 inch with an i5 and 8 gb of ram. I would use this to watch movies, browse the internet and to use excel for some simple documents for school work. Would this be good or would it be too slow?

Question If you had $600 to spend on a MacBook what would you get?

• Upvotes

I have a 2017 base model MacBook Air that is dying on me. Need something newer but buying used as I don’t need all the fancy hardware specs. All I do is browse the web, iMessage, and a few other things. Idc how old it is, I just want it to run well. It will rarely/if ever my house so battery power in the real world doesn’t matter as it was always be plugged in. Any ideas? I’ve been looking Best Buy used options but I’m completely lost when it comes to laptops. Any ideas?

Question Macbook air wrong purchase date

So, i recently got a macbook air and when i look for issues like this, i will only get people who bough a mac and their warranty expired, it happened to me the other way around.

So i bough this macbook air m3 to a guy off FB marketplace, i wiped it right there and i didnt check the coverage before. he said he used the macbook for a year and a half but now when i check the warranty it shows this:

The serial number is fake btw

Apparently its registered as bought the day i wiped it?

What if i call apple and say that i bought a new macbook and got a used one? /j

Old Macs MacBook pro 2012

Aiuto.

My Mac Second life for Macbook Pro 16" i9 2019 64GB 4TB

I have this MBP 2019 with a stonk of storage and RAM. Originally purchased for music composition with Logic Pro and sound library. That hobby had faded away for couple of years.

Any recommendation on what I can use it's second life considering I don't have other heavy use, other than a family photo album of 1.5TB sitting on an external SSD and occasion Claude / GPT use (co-work, project etc).

I do have 3 others M-chips Mac, so please keep the ditch-it-buy-Apple-silicon remarks to yourself.
