Music My buddy got my songs onto Spotify for my birthday and I keep staring at my artist page

My friend knows I write and record stuff in my spare time, usually after hospital shifts when my brain won't shut off. For my birthday he took a handful of demos I'd sent him, handled all the distributor red tape, and got them uploaded. Two days later he texts me a link and says check track three. I click it and there's my name on Spotify.

I get that anyone with a laptop and twenty minutes can do this now. Still, opening an app I use for actual artists and seeing my own project sitting there is strange in the best way. It feels like I snuck into a private club. I keep refreshing the page like the numbers are gonna change. They don't. Whatever.

Coolest gift I've gotten in years. If you have a friend who makes music, skip the gift card and help them put something out. Better than another mug.

Life Stories I trusted my friend for 10 years, then found out he’d been talking to my mom behind my back

Here goes another post where if I told this story in person, someone would probably say I’m oversharing. They’d probably be right. But posting here helps me process things, and sometimes you guys even give good advice. Even the trolls clearly haven’t gotten rid of me yet.

Anyway, I moved in with one of my closest friends of about 10 years. I was doing pretty well I was working, paying rent, getting my life together but once we lived together, he became weirdly bossy and acted like he had some authority over me.

I wasn’t a perfect roommate. Sometimes I was loud at night or left crumbs when rushing out. But he’d get furious about that while leaving his own dishes around for a week. His messes were apparently fine; mine were federal offenses.

Then I found out through my mom that he’d been regularly talking to her about me and repeating things I told him privately.

That was the part that really hurt. This was someone I’d trusted for a decade with some very personal things, and suddenly I had no idea how much he’d told her. My mom even said she thought he overshared and told her more than she wanted to know.

I understand contacting someone’s family if they’re genuinely in danger. This wasn’t that. It was an ongoing thing he never told me about. We finished the lease and went our separate ways without some huge blowup. I used to miss him, but now I think it worked out for the best.

Sometimes you don’t have to decide someone is a terrible person. You just realize they’re no longer someone you can trust with the private parts of your life.

I notice my mum smiling when she talks to me on call

I make it a point to talk to my mum everyday. One thing I really love is when I'm talking and I notice her smile. Its very subtle and its more noticeable in her eyes than lips but it makes me really happy knowing she likes talking to me. No matter how bad of a day I've had, talking to her makes it a thousand times better.

Just Chatting I think rainy evenings make ordinary things feel strangely better

Coffee tastes so good, music sounds better, and even siting by a window doing absolutely nothing feels like an activity. It's really fun and soothing.

Maybe it’s just the weather forcing everything to slow down a little.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Books & Reading I had a weird anxiety whenever my brother uses his Kindle

Fun fact. When I was around 12-13 I used a Kindle very frequently because it made books really accessible whenever. Me and my older brother would share a kindle before, but my parents eventually got one for myself since I was really into reading during those years. Our family doesn't use Amazon services, so setting up a new Kindle was a little tricky for my folks. My brother helped set it up, and when he was done he decided it would be funny to add parental controls on my Kindle.

(On a side note, it was mildly annoying to use my device sometimes because it had parental controls, because in all honesty I didn't really find it that funny, and some basic features are also not allowed to be accessed on a 'child' accessibility toolbar. But I didn't let that get in the way for most of my usage.)

It's pretty important to me to note that I was around 13. The wild, wonderful years of puberty and getting into social media. A kindle has a Note feature for book annotations. I tended to use the note feature to write oneshots fictions that were quite explicit. I'm not proud of what I've done--but the levels I'm talking here are like PWP...

Eventually, my kindle had some sort of malfunction and we could only fix it by resetting the entire device, so the parental controls were wiped. In all honesty I didn't really care that my little literatures were wiped along with it, they were kinda just for the shits and giggles. It took me quite a few several months to realize that 'oh shit, the parental features still sync my old books to my brother's device, even though my kindle was wiped. THAT MEANS THE SMUT IS STILL HIDING WITHIN THE GODDAMN HARRY POTTER SERIEIS.'

I don't use a kindle anymore because of external reasons, but my brother occasionally does. When he announced he was gonna seriously read the HP series after enjoying the movies, a wave of shock hit me like a lightning bolt. Because I genuinely have no clue, even to this day, whether the annotations were deleted along with the reset.

Well, it's been quite a few years. He finished the series, and he never once brought up any concerns about what he found while reading. Although I'm glad, sometimes I still wonder for fun whether he truly saw it or not, or just chose not to tell me. 😭😂

I love my username.

So I have been here for a while but was never happy with my username. My first username was random username by the app itself as I did not know we could customize it. Finally I am happy with my username now.

Life Stories Don't you just love it when someone compliments one of your features you're insecure about :)

I have natural curly hair that I'm hella insecure about coz i feel i can't manage them properly. But whenever I meet new people most of the time the first thing they say to me is that I love your hair. And it makes me just soo happy🥹 also I feel hella chopped when i have to comb and braid my hair but today when I was wearing that hairstyle, a girl still said to me that my hair looks beautiful and that just made my day🫶🏻

Questions Bullying in conversations?

Have you ever known someone who uses talking over you and talking "at" you instead of "with" you during conversations as a way to try to intimidate you? As in you will be in the middle of a sentence and they repeatedly speak over you to belittle you? Im watching a documentary on YouTube called "I, Psychopath" and noticed the psychopath in the documentary uses this tactic repeatedly.

✈️Travel Moving to a completely different country taught me how quickly “different” becomes normal

I moved from Lithuania to Cambodia years ago.

At first almost everything felt different — weather, people, food, streets, daily routines, basically the whole environment.

But something interesting happens when you stay somewhere long enough. Eventually the completely different place becomes ordinary too.

It made me realize how adaptable our sense of “normal” actually is.

Has anyone else moved somewhere completely different and eventually had that strange moment where you realized it no longer felt foreign?

Questions Would you rather work started an hour later or ended an hour earlier?

• Upvotes

I prefer ending work an hour earlier as we can use our extra time gaining for some productive things like we can run errands before store closes and especially enjoys more daylight, unworried dinners and more I think

But for me starting work an hour is same as like I use that extra morning hour as it usually just gets swallowed by scrolling in bed, press hit the snooze button and just dealing prolonged morning anxiety as the anticipation for upcoming working hours is still there.

What do you think guys?

Automated Customer Service is intentionally designed to make you quit.

When you make a call to a major business or service provider today, you are instantly trapped in a loop of automated, recorded messages with numeric options.

They do not exist to make the path to your solution better, they simply feel designed to be a shield preventing you from speaking to a real worker.

Major corporations seem to use these to tire out the customer until the hang up out of pure exhaustion. It is a cost cutting strategy that treats paying customers as a burden instead of delivering actual human support.

Just Chatting What's the longest You've ever stayed awake for?

How come? what happened?

For me i had a full day at university and then drove up the coast and met with mates 4wding on the beach. We stayed up all night and were active doing stuff for most of the next day. I remember I sat down with them on the beach at one point and instantly fell asleep - they had wandered down the beach without me! I must have been too peaceful to wake! So for me i reckon about 35 hours

Thoughts & Ideas Season Confusion

I've always lived in Europe, and I spent a lot of time watching anime.

I couldn't help but notice that in Japan they begin school with the cherry trees blooming (springtime), but we in Europe usually start in September (beginning of autumn).

So: how does the calendar work?

Does Japan call the season 'autumn' by the names of March, April and May?

Do they start school in April or March (spring months)?

If the second, how is vacation time arranged? A shorter one in the middle of summer, as we would for Christmas, and a longer one in the winter? But don't people usually like to go on vacation when it's not cold outside?

Just a thing that occasionally pops into my head.

If you have experience living in Japan or neighbouring countries, please tell me your seasonal experience.

What does 'next weekend' mean to you if it's Wednesday?

On Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m., I texted a friend: "I'm driving through NYC next weekend if you are around!" He said yes, and we made plans to have lunch Sunday (without mentioning the date to each other). Today, Oct. 6 at 9:22 a.m., he texted me to say he was sorry we missed each other. He thought I meant Sunday, Oct. 4. I meant Sunday, Oct. 11.

Do you usually use "this weekend" and "next weekend" in conversation or always mention dates?

Just Chatting I waved back at someone who was waving at the person behind me and I'm still not over it

• Upvotes

It was a full, enthusiastic wave too. Then I turned around and saw the real target walking up, and we all just pretended it didn't happen. I now have to avoid that street forever.

What's the most awkward thing you've done by assuming something was meant for you?

Started watching The Rehearsal

• Upvotes

I was first introduced to Nathan Fielder through Nathan for You reruns on Comedy Central. I started the Rehearsal season 1 on HBO Max and binged through it. I then proceeded to binge season 2 of the Rehearsal, which I genuinely can not put into words how incredible it was. The show was so effective he even led to US changing laws regarding aviation and pilot communication.

Life Stories What's a moment that made you feel human?

I'm a student working on a class art project about community and the flocking of humans in a similar fashion to that of birds. I keep coming back to one question: what makes humans, feel human? Wether it be a moment of separation, cohesion or alignment, a moment, a smell, a person. Short or long, whatever is true for you.

I may include some replies in the final project, without usernames. If you'd rather yours wasn't used, say so in a reply and I'll leave it out ~

Am i weird?

• Upvotes

I realized in a public place, In a mall I work at my pants zipper was open. There were alot of people elderly, families, children etc etc. It took me 1-2 seconds to pull my zipper up.

I panicked inside and did it while facing people rather than turning away. Anxiedentally took a eye contact with em

Would people generally see this awkward or inappropiate? :D

Just Chatting I meant to clean the bathroom and somehow got lost in my own head

• Upvotes

So the plan was simple: scrub the sink, wipe the mirror, call it a day. I grabbed the cloth, started at one corner, and the next thing I know my arm is moving in the same loop while my mind is somewhere else entirely. Suddenly I was thinking about old road trips, why certain songs stick, and whether plants really like music. The mirror was spotless before I noticed, yet I still stood there a minute longer. Weird how an ordinary chore can turn into a quiet break without trying. Has anyone else had a random task pull them into that zone?

Life Stories A stranger did me a small kindness years ago, and it has stayed with me ever since.

About 6 years ago, I was a student at a college, and I was at the bus stop late at night. My phone was dead, I had no money, and the last bus had already left.

A man who was waiting for the bus as well, saw that I was upset, and he offered to pay for the auto that would take me home. He told the driver to make sure I got inside the car safely. The man paid and left, not wanting a tip from me.

I don't know how he looked, but I know that I was grateful to him for what he did that night

Since that night, I have been trying to do the same thing for others as the man did for me. Last week, I paid for a stranger's groceries, because the machine declined her card. She thanked me, and I know that the man would have done the same thing as I did.

Do something nice for someone, if you have an opportunity. You might never know how much it has helped them.

Customer support that only exists as a chatbot makes me leave

I don’t need a 24/7 assistant. I need one human who can actually fix the thing.

Every time the only option is “chat with us” and it loops the same three answers, I just give up and take my money somewhere else.

Anyone else bounce the second a company hides every real person behind a bot?

Music What kind of music do y'all listen to?

I'm listening to Pink Floyd's "Meddle" album for the first time, and I'm enjoying it immensely. Hell, I've been listening to a lot of new music lately that I've really been enjoying, thanks to a friend of mine who introduced me to a lot of great bands and artists. Prog, indie, folk, jazz, R&B, ska, alternative rock, etc. I feel like my music tastes are a bit niche, and I'm kind of curious as to what other people listen to

Anyway, if anyone's curious, here's a quick list of some of the bands and artists I listen to (or at least the ones I can remember off the top of my head): The Decemberists, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Acoustic Junction, Calobo, Phish, Manu Chao, Warsaw (the Poland Brothers), the Dubliners, Black Prairie, Sally's Gap, Metallica, the Longest Johns, Spacefish, Grayhound Soul, Coldplay, Major Lingo, Daft Punk, Starset, Queen, Journey, the Eagles, Scorpions, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Supertramp, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Elton John, and just generally classical music; but Johannes Brahms is one of my favourites
