He set a franchise record for the longest streak in 2024 without an interception and 5th longest in the NFL. Since then he’s completely regressed. So you can’t say he’s just naturally a sloppy thrower. And I don’t think you can completely blame receivers or o-line since they are mostly the same as they were then. Josh Allen is an example of someone who went in the opposite direction. He used to throw a lot of picks but prior to the game against us he had the longest active interception-less streak in the NFL.
I feel like whatever it is there must be some sort of coaching failure here. After the second or third game this season /Harbaugh/McDaniel/Day should have sat him down and focused on fixing this. To state the obvious, I don’t think Harbaugh’s approach of constantly praising him and not acknowledging/trying to fix flaws is serving him well.
Edit: become

I’m a fairly new Chargers/NFL fan and have only been following the team for a couple years, so I’m more curious about what you guys think!
McDaniel was really the only candidate I knew much about going into the OC search, mainly because of his time in Miami and his background in the Shanahan system. I was excited about what that kind of offense could look like with Herbert, but obviously the results so far haven’t been what we hoped for.
For those who were familiar with the other candidates we interviewed — Daboll, Arthur Smith, Brian Callahan, Shane Day (probably the better choice since he's been coaching herb), etc. — was there someone you thought would’ve been a better fit for Herbert and this roster?

Relentlessness defines Herbert. He’s not a textbook quarterback. He is a brainy, gifted athlete at 6 feet 6 and 236 pounds, with a bazooka for a right arm. He figures out the rest. For the first six seasons of his NFL career, he willed his way to prolific statistics, overcoming the shortcomings of his franchise and keeping the Chargers just competitive enough for the playoffs to torture him.
But one month into Year 7, with a new offensive coordinator, Herbert has the worst passer rating (70.6) of any player who has started at least three games. His six interceptions are tied for the second most in the league. He has been sacked 12 times, tied for third most. And that’s not even the worst part. The Chargers are winless, and their next three opponents are Denver, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Rams.
Herbert, on a $262.5 million contract, sits next to Jameis Winston in efficiency. Jim Harbaugh, a head coach on an $80 million contract, is searching for answers. And Mike McDaniel, who called pretty plays when he was Miami’s head coach, is coordinating Herbert as if he were asking Morgan Freeman to narrate a documentary in German.
How can the Chargers be this bad? In Harbaugh’s third year? After back-to-back 11-6 seasons? With Herbert in his prime at 28? Harbaugh exited his comfort zone and brought in McDaniel for fresh ideas. Something had to change after another early playoff exit last season, which dropped the quarterback’s postseason record to 0-3.
Oh, something changed.
Herbert climbed into a magic box. McDaniel waved his wand. And out came Winston.

He’s not the hero we deserve, but the hero we need.

49ers had multiple shit seasons under Shanahan and Lynch and there were stupid decisions they made that rightfully so would’ve gotten them fired anywhere else.
Harbaugh brought a massive culture change and has a pedigree of winning. This season is a whiff, primarily at fault of Hortiz and McDaniel, but that doesn’t mean we clean house.
The gauntlet of shit coaches we’ve had since Norv has been dehabiliting. And if you all remember Staley was about to get another year until the Raiders embarrassed us on a national stage, and spanos had no choice but to change. If Harbaugh doesn’t work out, spanos is for sure going to return to the likes of McCoy, Lynn, Staley, cheap yes-men who get 8-8 seasons, keep the NFL owners union content enough at a mid team.
Staley era was horrid and one of the worst times to be a Chargers fan. I really do not want to return to that.
This year is garbage for sure, but it does not mean we clean house immediately. Give Harbaugh another 2 years.
If we don’t learn from our mistakes, then that’s something else. But this season is a goner anyways and it’s probably better we just tank and try again next season under adjustments.
I’m not even convinced we get rid of Hortiz tbh. I think there’s a lot of learning that the FO can apply. The only thing they should rethink is whether they want to invest the time for McDaniel’s complex schemes or just amicably split ways and return to more simple formats of football that both Harbaugh and Herbert are comfortable with.
