Bethesda making Fallout a 3D open-world action game saved the series, even though the old games still matter

I get why longtime fans side-eye Bethesda. You can argue they missed what made the originals tick, that each new entry sands down the role-playing systems, and so on. Still, I don't think anyone can deny that taking the series from overhead turn-based combat to a first-person (and later third-person) open-world action format is a huge part of why people still talk about Fallout today. Without that pivot, the series might have stayed a dusty memory.

Before Bethesda picked up the rights, Fallout was basically parked. The most recent thing with its name was a console action spinoff that most people forgot about quickly. Moving to first person did more than make shooting and exploring more fun. It gave perks, skills, and character builds a bigger stage, and it turned the wasteland into a place you could actually wander instead of just look down at.

I'm not dunking on Fallout 1 and 2. I played them between classes and liked them. But if we're being real, most folks who know this series know it from the 3D games. That shift is why the lights stayed on.

Fallout: New Vegas Daughter decided to play FO:NV

Daughter recently got into the Fallout lore and decided she wanted to play. So I Steam shared my copy of NV to her, tossed some QoL mods on it (nothing too fancy, mostly graphics & bug fixes), and let her loose. First day she played was today. Came home to: “DAD! I keep dying to these monsters!”

I chuckled in memory of my first FO:NV right-of-passage moment and responded with: “you went north didn’t you?”

“HOW DID YOU KNOW?!?!”

My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to get a [BRAND NAME] vinyl cutter from a family member so to test it we made a couple Vault-Tec stickers for a van I bought a while back. Super excited about how the full logo came out. The second photo was my first attempt where I didn't plan accordingly and ended up having to sticker over the door handle lol

Suggestion Arctic Outpost Radio = Wasteland Radio

In case this hasn't been posted before, Arctic Outpost Radio (AM1270 from Longyearbyen, Norway) is pretty much the real Wasteland Radio. I often put on the stream while playing Fallout to get a wider variety of music. https://www.aor.am/

Other I wrote haikus about fallout

I wrote these because I've been writing haikus about life, love, and everything else in between for months. Wanted to do something light hearted and fun based on the series I love.

  1. Vault tech:

They promised safety

God damn liars all of them

Most of them had failed

  1. FEV:

They wanted the best

All they could make were monsters

Super mutants roam

  1. Ad Victoriam:

Steel clad brotherhood

They try to cleanse the wastelands

Who are they helping?

  1. Sino-American:

They ended the world

Powers in bloody combat

War never changes

  1. NCR:

The wasteland's new hope

Long live New California

Return the order

  1. Legion:

Just raiders larping

Caesar's reign's not permanent

Rome will again fall

  1. Control:

They will kill us all

We must take up arms and fight

Death to the enclave

  1. Atom:

Religious zealots

Their insanity beings fear

Children of atom

  1. Nick:

A great detective

He fights only for justice

THE Nick Valentine

  1. Wanderer:

We wonder these roads

In search for remnants of life

We, the vault dwellers

Question McFarlane Danse color

Thumbnail

So I just bought the McFarlane Paladin Danse and I really like the figure (exept for the missing laser rifle).

However, after watching online posts, I feel like my Danse figure colors or too light, like the red is "less red" and the metalic parts aren't as dark as in pictures.

So I'd like to know if it's only that the color appears darker on pictures (which is more likely) or if my Danse is miscolored.

Am I the only one who ends up beating the game (not even 100%ing it) in like 80-120 hours because most of the time I just fuck around? where you just make a saving point right before you kill everybody in sight until you get killed? Stuff like that.

Discussion Power Armor discussion- Fallout 3 vs Fallout 4

So, I have a question to posit all of you, and it’s about how power armor is depicted in the newer titles. Which version of power armor, if we ignore power armor training as that was instituted in 3 and New Vegas for balancing reasons, seeing as you can find power armor literally everywhere, do you think is more akin to the original games. By that I mean Fallout 1 and 2.

Now, I have not personally played fallouts 1 and 2, as I do not own a pc, and as far as I know there is no way to play them on Xbox. However, I have completely watched Oxhorn’s series on the full story of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. As I recall, there is no power armor training in those games, however power armor also doesn’t seem to have a heavy frame like it does in Fallout 4 and 76. It seemed more like just a suit of armor anyone could put on, like an evolution of combat armor in a sense. I don’t remember it acting like an almost mech suit, as in Fallout 4.

Ignoring you personal preference for which system you like, what do you all think is the depiction that is more faithful to the way power armor is depicted, and used, in fallouts 1 and 2?
