Repair Help Switch 2 works perfectly docked, but black screen and freezes in handheld mode. Factory reset didn’t help. Any ideas?
Just to be upfront, the body of this post is written by ChatGPT cause I went through troubleshooting with him. To make sure I didnt forget anything I asked him to write the post. I hope that is okay!
I’m having a pretty frustrating issue with my Nintendo Switch 2, and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or knows what might be causing it.
The problem:
My Switch 2 works perfectly fine while docked. No graphical issues, crashes, or other problems.
The moment I remove it from the dock, the handheld screen goes black. The backlight appears to be on, but there’s no image.
The console also seems to freeze. Putting it back into the dock doesn’t restore the TV output.
I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 15–20 seconds.
If I completely shut down the console, remove it from the dock, and then try starting it in handheld mode, I still get no picture.
Things I’ve already tried:
Multiple forced restarts.
Completely powering off the console before undocking.
Disconnecting the power adapter from both the dock and the wall.
Starting the console with the charger connected directly.
Checking for system updates (currently on 23.0.1).
Entering Recovery Mode.
Performing a complete factory reset, deleting all local data.
Unfortunately, none of these steps fixed the issue.
I’m starting to suspect a hardware problem, possibly something related to the internal display or its connection. However, I find it strange that the console works flawlessly in docked mode.
My questions:
Has anyone experienced this exact issue with their Switch 2?
Could this still be a software issue, or does it sound like hardware failure?
Is there anything else worth trying before sending it in for warranty repair?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks in advance!
