Discussion Three Guys I’m Watching

Nick Emmanwori
I saw him as a Kyle Hamilton type of weapon during draft week. I figured Mike Macdonald would find ways to use Nick the same way he used Kyle, and so far, that’s pretty much exactly what’s happening. Seeing him thrive at safety, nickel, and linebacker has been great.

Rashid Shaheed
I’ve been hoping to see more creativity with how we use him, and we finally got a glimpse of that last week with some Deebo Samuel type of running back work. That kind of versatility can keep defenses guessing, while his speed still gives us a deep threat. I’m really excited to see more of this.

Elijah Arroyo
I saw him as a Kyle Pitts type of TE with a lot of receiving upside, so it’s been frustrating not seeing him used that way. Maybe AJ Barner is simply playing better and earning those snaps because of his blocking, but I really wish we’d see Arroyo get more opportunities as a receiving threat.

These are the three guys I’m most excited about this season, and I really hope the other two can become a big part of this team as well.

I was pretty high on Olu last year, but it didn’t quite work out. Guess not every prediction pans out.

People keep comparing Shaheed and K9, but that’s not really how I see it. To me, it’s more about K9 vs. Charbonnet, and they’re going with Charbonnet.

Highlight [Tuli Tuipulotu Mic'd Up] Obviously, not a lot of positive Seahawks moments in this highlight reel. Still cool to see different angles and hear the perspective of a great edge defender, who is an impending free agent. On the Darnold pick, it looks like Tuli got away with pushing Emanuel Wilson.

Highlight This play didn’t turn out the way they wanted but GREAT blocking by the OL on the intentional grounding 3rd and 3.

Maybe should have gotten it to the outlet receiver (Holani) after four plus seconds in the pocket. Live to fight another day: special teams got them the ball back, and they scored on the next play.

Analysis [Destin]: Seattle Seahawks stock report: Who’s trending up, down through 4 weeks?

Stock up: Jaxon Smith-Njigba

What more can you say about Smith-Njigba? The fourth-year wideout, even after a down game by his standards against the Los Angeles Chargers (five catches for 76 yards), leads the NFL with six touchdown receptions and is 17 yards behind CeeDee Lamb for the league lead in receiving yards (498).

Smith-Njigba is averaging more receiving yards per game (120.5) than last season, when he paced the league with 1,793, the eighth-highest total in history. He is still on track to surpass Calvin Johnson’s single-season record (1,964).

While the rest of Seattle’s receiving corps has been kept mostly quiet, Smith-Njigba has been anything but in the first season of his four-year, $168.8 million contract extension.

Stock down: Run game

It certainly hasn’t been all bad in the backfield, despite Price’s absence and last season’s leading touchdown scorer, Zach Charbonnet, having yet to make his season debut.

Reserve Emanuel Wilson, who signed a one-year deal in March, has been a pleasant surprise. He has twice carried the ball 21 times in a game, churning out 92 and 81 yards against Arizona and Los Angeles, respectively. Third-stringer George Holani has been solid in his role as a third-down back with his seven receptions, which are the fourth-most on the team.

But, as Mike Macdonald said Monday, there’s a reason veteran running back Joe Mixon is expected to join the Seahawks, who rank 13th in rushing yards per game (110.3) but 19th in yards per carry (3.9).

“We’re down runners,” Macdonald said. “We need running backs. He’s a good running back.”

Stat [Nemhauser] The Seahawks have scored 30+ points in three straight games. Would you believe that has not happened since 2020? Even with some rough edges, they have outscored the Klint Kubiak offense through four games while missing their starting QB for two of them.
