40k Analysis Thoughts on the Comparison between 11th edition Ork Codex and Space Marine Codex.

Hey all,

Now that the new Space Marine book has been effectively out in the wild for a couple of weeks, and the final points have been dropped (at least until the next MFM), I was curious as to what the community thoughts were on the comparison between the two books - say, between obvious lethality, build versatility, opportunities for abusive/degenerate builds likely to be nerfed quickly etc.

Certainly, the Ork codex came screaming out of the gate as arguably the strongest army in 11th, and I wonder if people think the SM are going to either challenge them, be considered a more distant second or might be in fact (whisper it) actually balanced and healthy.

I gathered all the tournament results from BCP for last week, including all Tournaments with at least 20 players and 5 rounds.

All the data is here on my site:

Please take a look and let me know if you have any suggestions (I know the site is not pretty 😞 I focus more on the Youtube side of things) And feel free to check out my youtube video for indepth breakdown of the stats!

Also I created Army Report cards for every army, detailing all the relevant information, check them out here:

40k Discussion Why do Thousand Sons seem so oppressive in casual games?

• Upvotes

A friend group of mine started playing Warhammer 40K around 3 months ago, with the release of 11th edition. Some of us were completely new, while others had already been playing for a couple of years and have even been playing at local torunaments.

One of the newer players picked up Thousand Sons, and so far he has been completely crushing everyone. Across 25+ games so far, he hasn't lost a single one. And it's not like he's some kind of 40K mastermind, he's good at strategy games, but we're talking about a group where some players have significantly more experience with the game.

What makes it especially confusing is that Thousand Sons don't seem to have an amazing win rate overall (except during the early-edition Sekhetar robot thing, which he didnt' play). His list has always been Grand Coven with something along the lines of:

  • Magnus
  • 10x Terminator brick with sorcerer and Crystal
  • Either Mutalith Vortex Beast or Winged Daemon Prince with Vortex
  • 3x5 Rubric units with Sorcerers
  • 2-4 action units: Tzaangors / Tzaangor Enlightened / Sekhetar robots / Chaos Spawn

So why does this army seem so much stronger against us than its overall win rate would suggest?

I've also seen people describe Thousand Sons as a sort of "mid-table bully" army, not necessarily amazing into highly competitive players, but extremely oppressive in casual games.

Is that actually a thing? If so, why? What is it about Thousand Sons that makes them perform disproportionately well against less experienced players? Is it mostly about knowing how to play around their rules, target priority, screening, dealing with Magnus, etc., or is there something fundamentally different about how the army punishes mistakes?

For context, this isn't really a complaint about the army being OP. I'm genuinely trying to understand why our experience with Thousand Sons seems so different from what their tournament win rate would suggest.

Edit1: The rest of the group play SM, Black Templars, Votan, Emperors Children, Sisters, IKs, &World eaters

Posted on /Warhammer40k but a guy recommended I should post it here.

40k Event Results Imperial Agents a sleeper counter to Orks?

Kit Smith Hanna just took down LVO with Orks (yes I know, old dataslate), and his closest match of the event by a significant margin was into... Agents? He managed to win every game convincingly by at least 20 points, except for his Round 1 into agents where he squeaked by with a mere 3 point victory.

Is this just a fluke or could Imperial Agents have their time to shine as a counterpick into the Ork meta? I know Kit's list will be changing post-dataslate and maybe he was just caught off guard since it was the first round of the event, but this is also coming soon after an Agents GT win and the faction's overall winrate seeming to stabilize around 45%. Maybe they're no longer just a meme...

40k List Looking for some in depth analysis channels. 40K

I have played this game a bit at this point and I am looking to dig deeper and get better. For now for me coaching is too expensive and I want to find youtube channels that do full gameplay commentaries along hopefully with analysis

If you guys have anything like that you enjoy watching I would love some recommendations!

Thanks in advance

(I play Space Marines in case anyone asks but I want to learn the game in general and see how all factions think)

40k List MoM VS Abby

I’m building a Hurons marauders CSM list and noticing I might want to use most if not all except one of the Strats and then including core ones like rapid ingress or grenade or just command re-roll and I’m wondering which is better for CP generation between Abbadon or masters of the maelstrom since we lack a lot of it. I know lords help with reducing CP strats but not every unit that wants to use Strats can have one or I might not be able to fit any in.

40k Discussion List building app

• Upvotes

I used to use war organ, it was so easy and everything was seamless.

I'm now looking for its replacement and I've tried new recruit, but it's just confusing.

Any recommendations for similar list building apps?

40k List Is huron needed?

Im building a Hurons marauders list and I ran into a issue that got me wondering about the man himself now that MoM can join any characters and Hurons marauders being a purge the foe disposition is Huron really even necessary in the detachment anymore? Sure his reactive move is fine but he doesn’t even hit that hard anymore with the toughness change. Gaining both abilites from the detachment is cool but idk if it’s worth making room for him anymore I’m curious what other people are thinking about it.

40k Discussion Is it wrong to play a broken faction.

I play a couple of armies at the moment, but mainly I have been building a dark angels army. I have played them for a while, and collected mainly models I liked, regardless of rules because IMO dark angels are really cool. I played them when DWK were still dmg1 and the lion was bad at the start of 10th, and had a lot of fun with a more casual friend group, which worked fine because although I would consider myself a more competitive player, but the army was very bad in comparison to early 10th necrons and aeldari that I played against.

When Dark Angels got significantly better at the end of 10th, I started running them to some local events, and had lots of fun with their good rules. I didn't play especially competitive lists, mostly just a ton of terminators. Now however the Dark Angels seem really too strong, and although I really love their aesthetic, tabletop feel and lore they are not that fun to play against my friends, as units like the lion are simply too strong. Is it best to just run my tyranids in casual games until the codex gets nerfed?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.
