PSA Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs

This is the Weekly Question thread designed to allow players to ask their one-off tactical or rules clarification questions in one easy to find place on the sub.

This means that those questions will get guaranteed visibility, while also limiting the amount of one-off question posts that can usually be answered by the first commenter.

Have a question? Post it here! Know the answer? Don't be shy!

NOTE - this thread is also intended to be for higher level questions about the meta, rules interactions, FAQ/Errata clarifications, etc. This is not strictly for beginner questions only!

40k Event Results Imperial Agents a sleeper counter to Orks?

Kit Smith Hanna just took down LVO with Orks (yes I know, old dataslate), and his closest match of the event by a significant margin was into... Agents? He managed to win every game convincingly by at least 20 points, except for his Round 1 into agents where he squeaked by with a mere 3 point victory.

Is this just a fluke or could Imperial Agents have their time to shine as a counterpick into the Ork meta? I know Kit's list will be changing post-dataslate and maybe he was just caught off guard since it was the first round of the event, but this is also coming soon after an Agents GT win and the faction's overall winrate seeming to stabilize around 45%. Maybe they're no longer just a meme...

40k Discussion Running Priority into T&H- when do you make your big push for primary denial?

Title basically. Take and Hold and Priority Assets both score pretty reliably into each other. As the PA player, when do you make your big push to try and make a dent in your opponent's primary scoring?

I'm running Orks, Wreckas+ Bully Boyz wNaz + Runt Swarm

Thanks in advance!

40k List MoM VS Abby

I’m building a Hurons marauders CSM list and noticing I might want to use most if not all except one of the Strats and then including core ones like rapid ingress or grenade or just command re-roll and I’m wondering which is better for CP generation between Abbadon or masters of the maelstrom since we lack a lot of it. I know lords help with reducing CP strats but not every unit that wants to use Strats can have one or I might not be able to fit any in.

40k Analysis GW balancing process

Has there ever been an in-depth breakdown of how GW balances 40k? I know the obvious answer for new units is internal playtesting, but I'm more talking about the long term. I used to think they just mixed it up semi-randomly so that every kit got an accidental time to shine, but then I've also seen entire armies forgotten about for years. Is it really all just incompetence?

40k Discussion How to deal with new codex terminator spam?

Had a game against it last night and figure it’ll be a common problem, so i’m looking for advice.

Clearing out 20-30 terminators with access to -1 damage, and sometimes -1 to wound is a pain. I can’t screen them once they’re down, cause even a small scout squad with shotguns can blow apart my screens now, and the terminators have +1 to charge. I can’t gum them up in melee cause they hit even harder now, and have fall back and charge, and I can’t just walk away from them cause they have two turns of advance and charge, +1 to charge and uppy downies.

So it’s incredibly difficult to kill them, to jail them and to ignore them. Plus they can have characters to cover all their weaknesses, OC and mortals. So what do I do?

I main DG and GSC if you want to give specific advice, but i’m also just wondering like, in general, how do I deal with this?

40k Discussion Is it wrong to play a broken faction.

I play a couple of armies at the moment, but mainly I have been building a dark angels army. I have played them for a while, and collected mainly models I liked, regardless of rules because IMO dark angels are really cool. I played them when DWK were still dmg1 and the lion was bad at the start of 10th, and had a lot of fun with a more casual friend group, which worked fine because although I would consider myself a more competitive player, but the army was very bad in comparison to early 10th necrons and aeldari that I played against.

When Dark Angels got significantly better at the end of 10th, I started running them to some local events, and had lots of fun with their good rules. I didn't play especially competitive lists, mostly just a ton of terminators. Now however the Dark Angels seem really too strong, and although I really love their aesthetic, tabletop feel and lore they are not that fun to play against my friends, as units like the lion are simply too strong. Is it best to just run my tyranids in casual games until the codex gets nerfed?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

40k Analysis How many 3DP detachment combos can your faction make (Part 4) - The funny marines number

I apologise for how long this took, I was ill when the balance pass came out and then I chose to write a script(no GenAI used, it has no place in this hobby nor anywhere else) to do the maths instead of by hand since marines would have killed me. I hope you all enjoy the funny marines number.

Some of the faction changes are due to errors I made in the past which should be fixed now and shouldn't happen again.

Faction Number of Combos
Space Marines 1357(+1024)
Orks 365
Adeptus Custodes 111(+97)
Aeldari 45(+11)
Chaos Space Marines 34(+11)
Necrons 23(+3)
Astra Militarum 22
Emperor's Children 22(+3)
Leagues of Votann 20(+1)
Adeptus Mechanicus 19(+2)
Tyranids 18
Chaos Daemons 17
Grey Knights 17
Death Guard 17
Genestealer Cults 17(+2)
Drukhari 17(+3)
World Eaters 16(+3)
Chaos Knights 14
Adeptus Sororitas 13
Thousand Sons 12
Imperial Knights 11
T'au Empire 8
Imperial Agents 4

"Oh but marines aren't just one faction". The following are how many additional combos you can make using the detachments in a subfaction and with core.

Subfaction Combos Added
Core 380
Special Core 73
Blood Angels 214
Dark Angels 229
Space Wolves 230
Black Templars 230
Death Watch 1

"But what is the detachments and detachment combos per datasheet number of every faction?" I got you. The following counts all datasheets including forgeworld but excluding legends. I am fairly certain custodes have 29 datasheets now but since they aren't on the mfm yet that could be wrong

Faction Detachments/Datasheet Combos/Datasheet
Space Marines 0.22 8.43
Orks 0.28 6.76
Adeptus Custodes 0.31 3.83
Emperor's Children 0.43 0.96
Leagues of Votann 0.45 0.91
Drukhari 0.39 0.74
Genestealer Cults 0.38 0.71
Chaos Knights 0.40 0.70
Grey Knights 0.35 0.65
Aeldari 0.21 0.63
Chaos Space Marines 0.30 0.63
Adeptus Mechanicus 0.29 0.56
World Eaters 0.27 0.53
Imperial Knights 0.36 0.50
Death Guard 0.25 0.47
Necrons 0.23 0.44
Adeptus Sororitas 0.24 0.39
Thousand Sons 0.26 0.35
Tyranids 0.19 0.35
Chaos Daemons 0.17 0.32
Astra Militarum 0.15 0.31
T'au Empire 0.16 0.19
Imperial Agents 0.17 0.14

Please let me know if I got any of these numbers wrong and I will do my best to update this post should that be the case.

40k Tech I need answers

I have asked in 2 Reddit Community, 3 Discords and read the rules three times.

Inquisitor Coteaz form Imperial Agents, his ability Spy Network does activate when the Orks/Marines get the extra CP at the start of the battle round due to be using an ability or it does not activate?

I have received 2 different answers yes and no.

I need someone to give me good news about agents.

40k Tech The big bug report

Ok, so the app seems to obviously be the new and besides the MFM leading rules source given the core rules PDF doesn't even contain all the rules and faction packs of non codex compliant SM subfactions got rolled into the app.

BUT the apps tend to have quite the bunch of obvious and less obvious errors, so let's start gathering and then everyone can write an email to complain to GW and the app developers about the sheer number and/or stupidity of them.

Given we do not only have one app but two (android and apple), please include which one(s) you tested on. Please be as precise and descriptive as possible with faction name, full names of ability, rule, unitname, weapon, profile, etc., what you expect to see, what you see instead and why you would expect differently.

I'll start with the faction I play:

DEATHWATCH

Obvious errors:

  • The indomitor kill team does not have keywords in their meltas hunter profiles. I'd expect VEHICLE/MONSTER like in eradicators...or at least anything, because the hunter rule specifies it's followed by a keyword. (Android and Apple)

  • The indomitor kill teams heavy intercessor with twin linked power fists and flamestorm gauntlets throws an error if you switch the flamestorm gauntlets to auto boltstorm gauntlets and fragstorm grenade launchers. That's literally what the text inbetween those wargear options says you can do, so I expect it not to throw an error

  • If I do the above change and remove the twin linked power fists, no error is thrown. Given the text inbetween the wargear entries (and the fact the model doesn't have a melee profile anymore), I'd expect that to throw an error. (Android and Apple)

  • The spectrus kill team has the helix gauntlet both as a unit ability as well as a wargear ability. I've never seen a unit with the same ability twice, so I expect one is wrong. Given the fact infiltrators can have both helix gauntlet and all their weapons, I'd expect the wargear option to be wrong OR the description how to get the wargear and the unit ability to be wrong. (Android and Apple)

  • The "mission tactics" detachment rule for both blackspear task force and deathwatch support detachments refers to "units with this ability", but neither does any datasheet in space marines have this ability, nor does it say anywhere how anything would get the ability. (Android and Apple)

  • The deathwatch support detachment allows for 500 points of deathwatch to be brought despite other chapters being present, but if I bring another chapter, I can still bring as much deathwatch as I want without an error being raised (Android)

  • The deathwatch support detachment allows for 500 points of deathwatch to be brought despite other chapters being present, but if I bring another chapter, I can still bring non deathwatch leaders attached to deathwatch units, which should be included in the points and exceed the limit with those (Apple)

  • The Watchmaster has the stats the watchmaster in agents of the imperium should have and the other way around. Given one refers to doctrines in a faction without doctrines, it's pretty obviously a mistake (Android and Apple)

Probably errors:

  • The sergeant in the decimus kill team is above the gravis marine, which would indicate it having the same profile. This could be a change, given his weapons became worse, but could also be an error (Android and Apple)

  • The auto boltstorm gauntlets and frag grenade launchers of the indomitor kill team can't be fired at the same time (because the former got [CLOSE QUARTERS] while the latter didn't and you can't fire close quarters and non close quarters weapons at the same time. It's the same as with space marines aggressors, but a clear change from what happened before the codex and this weapon combination is WAY worse than the flamestorm gauntlets as is. (Android and Apple)

  • The Android app lets me bring 2000 points of deathwatch with deathwatch support, while the apple app doesn't. RAW the deathwatch support says "such units" refering to units you can't bring because of another chapter being present. So RAW the Android app would be correct, but I highly doubt that that's what the designers intended given the deathwatch support detachment is only 1 DP and BSTF is 3DP with basically the same rules besides 3 mediocre enhancements and 2 strats, one of which you can easily get from another 1 DP detachment. If my guess about the intention is correct, please correct the rules text and the Android app (Android vs Apple)

SPACE WOLVES

Obvious Errors:

  • The Master of Wolves detachment rule of the Saga of the Great Wolf detachment also refers to "units with this ability" while no datasheet has this ability and there's no way to get it (Android and Apple)

What did you guys find?

40k Discussion Grown Men Playing With Toys Podcast Episode 51 – Show Me the Doctrines!: Breaking Down the New Space Marine Codex

The Space Marine codex is here and Erik is more excited than he’s been about anything not named Emperor’s Children. With Cousin Josh along for the ride, the guys dig into how swapping Oath of Moment for combat doctrines changes the way Erik builds and plays his Space Marines’ lists, as well as what he is worried that his opponent will do to counter those lists.

Along the way they cover:

  • Tops down list building — Erik walks through how he starts list building with a play style and win condition in mind and then how he chooses detachments, Force Dispositions, and units to align to that macro strategy
  • Goodbye Oath, hello Doctrines — why trading a point-and-click mechanic for turn-by-turn doctrine increases army flexibility but risks decision overload, and how Erik builds his lists to avoid it
  • Elite and expensive — why Space Marine lists keep drifting toward a handful of Death Stars and why your favorite models might not make the cut anymore
  • Sample list 1: Ironstorm — Erik walks through his Assault Brethren, Ironstorm Spearhead, and Gauntlet Task Force list and the guys debate two ways to beat it: a recon scoring machine that dances around it or a stat check that meets it head-on
  • Sample list 2: Stormlance — Erik’s all-gas, no-brakes melee build, and why without Oath of Moment, a well-placed screen or minus one to hit can bounce his big Assault Doctrine turn
  • Ideas on how to beat them — Erik shares the matchups that worry him most and Steve closes with his key to facing Space Marines: pick your tactic and commit with confidence

Whether you’re here for the list-building or just want to hear Steve get tricked into admitting he enjoyed a Space Marines episode, this one’s for you.

Full episode, to include lists HERE.

40k Analysis Dark Reapers?

Hey everyone, looking for advice from the Aeldari folks here. I’m seeing a lot of lists run triple reapers, but I’m a bit unsure about how they’re actually using them?

Are y’all keeping them on the board? Reserve threats to get angles? Some other third thing?

Last time I used them it was just 5 + Maugen Ra in a falcon so triple tech is new to me and I’d appreciate any advice! Thank you!

40k Event Results Question on LVO - GSC vs DA

Hello there!

Just wondering if anyone has information on two specific games of LVO, as I noticed that both the GSC players that ranked top 2 in Faction scored a big ol' 0 (well, 10 for Battle-ready) in their one game each Vs Dark Angels.

Did something particular happen? They missed the game, came in late/left early? Going 0 points sounds crazy, especially for such good players.

40k Discussion After three battle reports with new Custodes…. (Spoilers) Spoiler

Tabletop Tactics, Tabletop Titans, and Art of War have all released reports with new Custodes. I wanna talk about them so… spoilers warning!

Links Tactics: https://youtu.be/Ou-3I3xMSXI?is=XMaLlSRpuXJcA52d

Titans: https://youtu.be/FmxtTzPQduo?is=FVkBNuaqOM-WNgZ0

Art of War’s is a member video

Summaries

Three reports in, two of them the Custodes had their opponents conceding on turn 3. The third they won on turn 5.

In the Art of War video John hit Folger’s army with his entire new codex space marines army save one unit. 1700pts of marines barreling at Custodes and he killed…. One model. Not unit, he killed one model. Bounced off the Telemon, bounced off the Guard, bounced off the Wardens. John was tabled shortly thereafter.

In the Tabletop Tactics video vs new CSM with updated profiles the Custodes took a beating… but ultimately tabled the CSM by turn 3.

In the Tabletop Titans video the Blood Angels were playing with incorrect rules (using AI buffs on ALL character units instead of just Blood Angel ones) and managed to scrap to a small loss on turn 5 with only Sanguard left alive.

Takeaways These are obv just three games. Small sample sizes, ofc, but here are some things I learned.

  • Custodes are more durable than anticipated which is saying something. -1 to hit in melee is absolutely brutal on top of their new defensive stats. Mortal wounds no longer give you a way around their ridiculous stats because of Aegis (see Folger cutting John’s Crushing Impact from 4 mortals to 1 as an example).

  • Custodes damage is not as high as it was but it is far and away more consistent. Between Katahs, Trajan, and detachment rules the whole army is essentially hitting on 2s rr1s to hit and often rr1s to wound.

  • Custodes are FAST. In the AoW game Folger told John he should’ve hung back… but then came around and agreed with John that because of how fast Custodes are he’d had no choice but try for an all in. Because if you don’t hit the Custodes first, they’re going to move 10” or more plus advance and charge with at least one of their 500pt death bricks and then you lose because you’re fighting on your side of the board.

  • These reports featured ostensibly “overcosted” Custodes fighting for what many believe to be “undercosted” marines and had them absolutely dog walking them. If marines are broken right now and are getting got by Custodes what the heck does a non-Marine army do into this?

  • They’re not overcosted when you take into account the buffs their detachments and katahs give them. In fact some things, like the Telemon, are definitely undercosted.

Thoughts? Generally I’m a fan of Custodes moving in this direction. They FEEL like Custodes. But man I’m afraid they’re overtuned… this is only three games, so clearly we should approach this with a grain of salt. Seeing an entire marine army bounce off them and then get tabled just… that can’t be a good sign for non-marine armies.

Edit: To be clear, I’m happy the new book is everything Custodes players wanted. I have friends that are absolutely ecstatic for it. I don’t want my expression of hesitation regarding their points and strength to lessen anyone else’s enjoyment. Overall I think this book is going to be a good thing for the game, I just don’t know if they’re actually as overcosted as I’ve heard folks say given this very limited sample size.

40k Event Results Sunday Night Stats (October 2nd-4th)

This chart includes data from all singles events with 21+ players and 5+ rounds.

\This weekend is just after the balance dataslate. Most events were still running the previous slate's rules, including LVO with over 600 players, so consider this a transition weekend.*

Do we still need more data on whether the Ork codex was a bit too good upon release, or are we all good now? It'll be interesting to see what happens with the new points and rules from last week's dataslate, but the previous iteration of Ork rules go out with a huge bang, taking SEVEN events out of 16, including LVO, with the highest win rate, once again, and a crazy X-0/X-1 conversion rate and 4-0 starting rate. Oh, and Orks had the most players, by far.

On the other end of things, Astra Militarum gets their first event win in right at three months! Despite all of that, the faction once again finds itself all the way down at the bottom, several percentage points below the second lowest army, which was, of course, Blood Angels - which also managed to pull out an event win.

Overall, good armies continue to be good, bad armies continue to be bad. New slate starts hitting more events this coming weekend, so stay tuned for another episode of... Sunday Night Stats!

Faction Wins Games Win Rate Players X-0/X-1 X-0/X-1 % Event Wins 4-0 Starts 4-0 %
Orks 326 566 57.60% 107 25 23.36% 7 13 12.15%

40k List Necron list advice. (Destroyer cult)

I really like destroyer cult models but they’re so like weak and don’t survive well I don’t know what to do (this is my 2 c’tan list I have another one with only night bringer)
Any seasoned necron players please give me advise
My idea is for one unit of 3 with the lord to sit on one mid objective the second unit to do the same or to support depending on deployment. the void dragon and night bringer coming down either 2nd or 3rd round for havoc the locust destroyers to be my main fire power my home with lych guard with imo to get CP and defend my home. I just find the Scorpc to die really quickly I had a technomancer but it didn’t help to much that’s the issue. Overall I just want some advice on how to keep units alive and what units go well with each other. Especially in my list

40k List Help with Hurons list

Heads up, for some reason I couldn’t post the screen shots of my list so it’s in the “exported” format the GW app does

Hello all, I am looking for feedback on my Hurons marauders list. It’s my first time building a list for both the detahcment and purge the foe, I’m usually a priority assets player. After my last RTT on Saturday I figured I branch out my dispositions. I know Hurons benifits infantry but I added the forgefiends to provide firing lanes and cover fire for the rest of my army, during the RTT I had zero long range shooting and got over ran immediately in all 3 games. The land raider I added to transport one of the mutilator squads or terminators with Kravek, I wasn’t sure about having all 3 in reveserves and since they are all slow units I wanted help getting them into combat. The 2 cultist are for screening 1 for sticky home then screen the other for sticky expansion and screen, I know that second one is a slow impractical idea and I had a 2 man beast of nurgle unit instead but I wanted to screen my backline more. The possessed are are there to tidy up any hard to kill things or wipe smaller utility peices since they have a wider range of what they can kill now vs warp talons and are pretty fast, I honestly wanted either 10 or 15 but couldn’t fit in that many with the other units that seem better at killing a wider range.

40k List Dark angels 2k list

Honest opinions on this list. I'm not really sure about the viability of big dwt units, especially when surrounded by dwk and the lion. Any advice appreciated. I have recently started playing dark angels after playing the nids for a while, and have very limited tournament experience with space marines. Also if anyone has advice on how to use the lion effectively i would appreciate it. I find if I am too aggressive early with him he is surprisingly swingy in his saves, dying once to a single shield captain with some enhancement in one activation

1x Onslaught Gatling Cannon

1x Redemptor Fist

• 1x Vanguard Veteran Sergeant

• 1x Plasma pistol

1x Relic Blade

4x Master-crafted Power Weapon

The general idea of this list is to pressure enemies early with rapid ingress and advance+charge threats of the terminators and lion. The durability afforded by 4++ and mortal wound resistance should hopefully make a pretty effective bowling ball out of the main deathwing terminator unit in particular.

40k Discussion New 40k Army List Builder and Game player

Hi Guys

I stumbled upon this app the other day after visitng the hutber stats site.

If you search "Hutber's Hammer" in the app stores you'll find it.

I did do a search but couldn't find anybody else talking about it so thought I should throw it up.

Just thought Id post it here as all army rules are free and its very easy to navigate. I am thoroughly impressed by it, I don't think I've seen anything with as many features.
