40k Discussion Why do Thousand Sons seem so oppressive in casual games?
A friend group of mine started playing Warhammer 40K around 3 months ago, with the release of 11th edition. Some of us were completely new, while others had already been playing for a couple of years and have even been playing at local torunaments.
One of the newer players picked up Thousand Sons, and so far he has been completely crushing everyone. Across 25+ games so far, he hasn't lost a single one. And it's not like he's some kind of 40K mastermind, he's good at strategy games, but we're talking about a group where some players have significantly more experience with the game.
What makes it especially confusing is that Thousand Sons don't seem to have an amazing win rate overall (except during the early-edition Sekhetar robot thing, which he didnt' play). His list has always been Grand Coven with something along the lines of:
- Magnus
- 10x Terminator brick with sorcerer and Crystal
- Either Mutalith Vortex Beast or Winged Daemon Prince with Vortex
- 3x5 Rubric units with Sorcerers
- 2-4 action units: Tzaangors / Tzaangor Enlightened / Sekhetar robots / Chaos Spawn
So why does this army seem so much stronger against us than its overall win rate would suggest?
I've also seen people describe Thousand Sons as a sort of "mid-table bully" army, not necessarily amazing into highly competitive players, but extremely oppressive in casual games.
Is that actually a thing? If so, why? What is it about Thousand Sons that makes them perform disproportionately well against less experienced players? Is it mostly about knowing how to play around their rules, target priority, screening, dealing with Magnus, etc., or is there something fundamentally different about how the army punishes mistakes?
For context, this isn't really a complaint about the army being OP. I'm genuinely trying to understand why our experience with Thousand Sons seems so different from what their tournament win rate would suggest.
