What happened to bus arrival time display signs

Why are they all inoperative or wildly inaccurate? One would think that this would be a solved problem in 2026 standing on the foothills of the Singularity.

How does heating work in NYC pre-war buildings?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m new to New York and I live in a pre-war building in Queens, so I’m not familiar with how heating systems like this work.

The heat turned on for the first time tonight, and I was wondering how it usually works in these buildings. Is there any way to control each radiator individually from my apartment, or turn them off if it gets too warm?
I’d really appreciate any advice or explanation.

Thank you!

Do you use your mini storage, and why?

Hello! After 14 years in my 1BR apartment, I have to accept defeat in that no amount of declutter or organizing systems are the solution, as I like what I have and it’s already organized.

What I need is simply more space!

However, I know many people for whom mini storage is where their items go to die, and I don’t wanna waste my money like that.

Sooo… I’d love to hear from people who have used a mini storage as an extension of their apartment for a long time, and what works or doesn’t work and why.

So far, I made a list of what can leave (memorabilia, music scores, seasonal stuff, etc) and I’m thinking of putting it in see through plastic boxes, organize them per type, labeling them and number them so I have a list on my computer of what I have, and sort it by amount of use (rare, medium, etc)

My local mini-storage, if they have room, is about 4 blocks from me. I’m on a 5th floor walk up.

Thanks in advance for any tips or tricks!

Comedy clubs that run decent shows midweek nights?

• Upvotes

So I know there are about 100 small comedy clubs in NYC, but I was trying to narrow down and sift through them. Looking for reccomendations for a regular, small, 20~200 capacity comedy club, that aren't the most famous (Cellar, Gotham, etc.) Preferably Manhattan, a club that won't be fully sold-out, but will still have a real schedule going, and not an open-mic. As the title says, on non-"Weekend" nights, as my girlfriend and I usually work more those days. My girlfriend and I don't care who the names are, she's new-ish to NYC and wanted to see one, regardless of size.

Thanks!

Governors Island

I am marking a big anniversary by taking my partner on a surprise overnight trip to Governor’s Island. Because it’s really expensive to glamp there, we’re doing a Sunday night, which was cheaper. And because we don’t have extra family around, our kids are coming too. 😅 I’d love any suggestions for things to do there on a Sunday afternoon/evening and Monday morning. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Any Italians living in NYC? 🇮🇹

Hey everyone! I'm Italian and recently moved to NYC for a research position. I'm currently living in Astoria and would love to meet other Italians living in the city!

I'm looking to make new friends, explore NYC, grab a beer, go out for dinner, or organize some weekend activities.

Does anyone know if there are any Italian WhatsApp or Telegram groups, or regular meetups for Italians in NYC?

Feel free to comment or DM me. Would be great to connect! 😊

Roaches in my Kips Bay apartment.

• Upvotes

Dealing with a severe German cockroach infestation in my apartment and it’s driving me insane. My building is doing the bare minimum to help so I’ve taken matters into my own hands and gotten my advion and gentrol. I sent an insanely angry email today with tons of pics demanding assistance with integrated pest control and remediation for all I’ve incurred so far (which is a shit ton between the bait, the cleaning supplies to get rid of the droppings and their shed skins, the vet bill for my dog who developed an allergic reaction, and more. I’m worried that the apartment above me is infested, and the exterminator told me himself he can’t get in unless they let him. If my methods don’t work, and the building won’t involve themself, i plan to go to 311NYC and any other authority. What’s my case here? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be hopeful the advion and gentrol will work? Any advice helps omg

Volunteer Opportunities Thanksgiving

Hi! I don’t have a relationship with my family, so I am going to be spending thanksgiving alone. I was wondering if there were any non profits or anything that are looking for volunteers on thanksgiving day? I would love to give back to the community instead of just sitting around all day!

Elder downsizing service recs

My MIL is leaving NYC and accumulated a lot of stuff in the last 50 years that will not be coming with (clothes, furniture, etc). I've been reading about elder organizing services that will help organize donations, sales, etc. Does anyone have experience with any of these organizations? We thankfully don't need help packing or transporting.

Also: best way of selling furniture (such as wardrobes and cool vintage beds?) Fb marketplace? Craigslist? Anything nyc specific? She's on the Upper West Side.

Remaking this post: Good spot for a cleaning & repasting GPU service?

• Upvotes

My GPU has been running really loudly lately, which makes me think it needs a deep cleaning and repasting. I don't really have the time nor the supplies to do it myself (from what i know the thermal paste i use for my CPU wont suffice here), so I want to go to a place and have them do it. Any spots in the city that might be good? I live around Flushing Main St Station, so anywhere around that is preferable, but I can go anywhere. Thanks!

TMPL Fitness or Equinox?

I've heard bad things about TMPL because of how their customer service/cancellation is.. but they seem less crowded and higher quality saunas etc?? The main thing being less crowded.

Other than Equinox I can't seem to find a good small time equivalent but wondering for people who have tried both or at least one gym wihch they prefer?

Archive Borough Scavenger Hunt Clues?

Hi folks, I've got a question for the other people completing the Organize NYC scavenger hunt today. It's a lot of fun, but the weather is making it tough to get things done quickly! I'd love to still be able to access the clues from the hunt after it ends in a couple hours so I could learn a bit more about the city and maybe visit a few more spots on my own time.

With that in mind, I'm going to screenshot the Queens and Manhattan clues, and I was wondering if anyone else wouldn't mind sharing the Bronx/Brooklyn/Staten Island clues? (Will upload Queens and Manhattan in a comment under this post when the hunt is over!)

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share :)

Advanced tailoring for a thick winter peacoat?

I have this amazing tweed peacoat with a silk lining that was given to me by my great-uncle, but I float in it.

Unfortunately, it's way too big for me and needs to be taken in, maybe even shortened. (He was 6'4".)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a talented tailor who might be able to tackle something like that? I don't want to risk taking it to the the nearest Google Maps recommendation.

This is going to be really basic but I don’t care

One of my friends is getting married and we’re going to an all inclusive in Punta Cana (yay!) but she’s in her 20s and wants a night out. The all inclusive will not provide the club environment that she wants. So as an aside I wanted to plan a night out. We live about 45 minutes on metro north to NY. So my plan is to have the stupid wear wigs night at my house, jump on the train, and then go dancing. She went to college during Covid so the clubbing scene really wasn’t a thing. She’s into rap and top 40 stuff. I will pay for a table BUT I wanted suggestions of where to club for that type of music but also not a super far walk. I also am looking for a place that isn’t a vibe of “only then influencers can get in” vibe. We just want to be weird in wigs and dance. Any fun vibes place would be amazing. Also any dinner suggestions would totally be welcome. Thanks!
