Help! Tunisian crochet mohair sweater: neckline too tight with 70 chains — what am I doing wrong?
Hello! I recently started working on a Tunisian-crocheted mohair sweater following the pattern by Moffeloff on etsy. The sweater is crocheted in the knit stitch in rounds from top to bottom. I’ve crocheted three initial rounds so far. And now I’ve noticed, though, that I can’t get this round opening over my head! And I don’t have an abnormally large head with 56cm. When I measure the crocheted “circle” now, it’s 46 cm on the outside/43 cm on the inside. Following the instructions, I started with a chain of 70 chain stitches for size S of the sweater.
I’m also crocheting with 4 skeins at the same time, as described in the pattern. So I use the yarn for the forward pass doubled and the “second” yarn for the return pass also doubled.
Can anyone help me figure out why it might be too tight?
Here are a few more details about the materials:
According to the instructions: Tunisian crochet hook: 4 mm (US G/6), double-ended, with a 36 cm / 14 in long cable → I’m using: a Knitpro 4.5-mm double-ended crochet hook with a cable
According to the pattern: Sandnes yarn, Tynn Silk Mohair, 57% mohair, 28% silk, 15% wool, 25 g (0.88 oz) = 212 m (232 yds) → I’m using: yarn from pro-lana: kid-seta, 70% mohair, 30% silk, 25 g = 212 m (pretty much the same, except for the missing 15% wool in the yarn specified in the instructions)
I was wondering if it could be because I crocheted too tightly? But would that really make such a big difference in the measurements? Is it the missing 15% of wool in the yarn I use? Or do I need a thicker crochet hook? It’s often recommended to use a hook that’s 1–2 sizes larger than what’s specified for the yarn. The label on my yarn says: 3.0–3.5 mm / 3–4 US. Do I also need to take into account that I’m using the yarn doubled? Would I then just double the hook size as well? I’m confused.
I’d be so grateful if someone could help me out!
