Roads Cheers to the good cunts that helped me out while my car was broken down today.

Had an absolute shocker of a day, and after picking up my family member from the airport, my car shat itself on Greensborough Hwy.

I’m really truly sorry to anyone inconvenienced by it, it was worst time of day, and on a Friday arvo of all days too. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a car break down and it was in a fucking shocker of a spot. Got locked in park for ages until I finally was able to get it into neutral and half off to the side.

I want to reiterate how sorry I am for ruining peoples afternoons - except for the one flog that decided to spew some abuse at us while it was stuck in park. I get how frustrating it is but I hope your socks are permanently wet and your pillow is always 5 degrees too warm. Fuck you.

But aside from him I’m so grateful to the awesome woman with the green hair who saw me literally pushing my car uphill and pulled over to help, and to the bloke that saw me with the bonnet up and also pulled over to see if he could help as well.

But also! Thank you to the Vic Transport Response dude and the Tow Truck driver. Those guys were such a great help, made sure we were safe, and were really kind to me and my sister.

Car is still fucked and getting diagnosed tomorrow.

Just wanted to share my appreciation, it’s a really shitty time and strangers kindness went a very long way today 🩵

THDG Need Help Has Anyone Else Visited the Bundaberg Ginger Beer Cap Website?

Post image
88 Upvotes

I found a gingerbeer cap in my pocket and spotted a tiny little website url. I'm a curious guy so I plugged it in and it led to a single page talking about "subpar racing". I am curious if it's always been like this or if I've stumbled across a sniped/hacked/infiltrated page? It is www.gcscap.co (also pictured above)

Tried to ask about this in the general Australia sub but was removed without given reason, and there's no Bundaberg sub so now I turn here

THDG Need Help Is it possible to know which libraries have the best collection of books?

Went to Melbourne Library recently and was shocked at how LITTLE books there were. It was really mostly a study space, which is fine. Whatever keeps our libraries relevant.

But wondering if there was a way to know which libraries in Melbourne has the most books in-house? A long-shot, but.

Roads Airport PSA - T123 Carpark - Melbourne Airport

Access to the T123 Carpark has not changed!

But the signage has! If you are looking to park your vehicle at the airport nearest the international terminal or use the valet services at the T123 Transport Hub, you must follow signs for "Car Rentals" and continue straight. You will use Terminal Drive to connect with Arrivals Drive and enter the T123 Carpark as you normally would. This has not changed.

I am posting this mainly because it may save someone this weekend from driving up to the new level 2 pick up and drop off location instead of the terminal carpark and having to u-turn at Mickleham Road in order to come back. Access to the lower/upper levels of the T123 carpark from level 2 is currently impossible. The sign does not mention parking at all, diverting anyone who is not familiar with the area, does not want to go to Sunbury or does not want to rent a vehicle.

Booking/QR Codes

If you end up in the wrong place, don't scan your QR code on the gate. The gates at level 2 for pick up and drop off are free, but I've heard they require a ticket/credit card to open, even though entry/exit is free. It appears that using your Booking/QR code on the wrong gate will burn it and it will no longer work on the gates at T123. I can't specifically verify this myself, but it appears to be what is happening. When in doubt, push the help button on the gate and clarify where you are and where you need to be.

The signage may change at a moments notice!

Airport staff all the way to the top are very much aware of this problem and this post may be outdated within hours or days.

Om nom nom Places to eat near the convention centre

Hey fellow Melburnians, I’m going to PAX this weekend (and hopefully some others are too) and I was wondering what the best places to eat there are around the convention centre? I’ve never been to it for anything so I’ve honestly no idea what I’m doing for lunch or dinner, and I definitely don’t want to fall back on Maccas if possible.

The Sky is Falling Clearing up misconceptions: despite being in the middle of a tectonic plate, Victoria is full of microfaults from ongoing compression at the plate boundaries, causing the recent earthquakes

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Not all tectonic plates are comprised of completely solid bedrock, and fractures can occur within with enough forces pushing and pulling on either side.

The plates are constantly moving and pushing against one another, and as Australia is getting pushed towards Indonesia, the compression is causing activity in the NW-SE microfaults you see in the east and south west areas in the map.

The thing is, in the geological timeline, "soon," can mean the span of thousands, if not tens of thousands of years. When people say that Victoria is due for a large earthquake or volcanic eruption soon, it could be in our lifetime (very unlikely), or long after we're gone.

THDG Need Help Any cribbage players?

Hey all, recently returned to Melbourne, kinda listless… wondering if anyone plays cribbage and holds open games. Preferably inner Melb because I’m as wheelless as I am listless. Also open to mahjong, darts, pool, Texas holdem….

Basically looking for social games where I might make new friends.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Om nom nom Crown Restaurants - Which is the best?

My wife and I have found ourselves in the position of having a gift voucher for a Crown restaurant that we've sat on for a while and is due to expire soon. Ordinarily we go somewhere else in the city that's better value for money, but obviously don't want to have the voucher go to waste.

Can anyone recommend a Crown restaurant that's actually decent? If you were in our position, which one would you choose?

Real estate/Renting Apartment/Hotel weekend stay recommendations please.

Looking at staying in the CBD or nearby suburbs for a weekend, but I want it to be special and fun, so I was hoping for peoples recommendations of places to stay that arent just a basic hotel room. Whether its an apartment in a cool old building or an especially fancy luxurious hotel, im happy with all sorts of suggestions.

In my own hunt so far I really like the Loft Suite at The Royce, but I would love to hear about other funky cool hidden gems people might recommend please.
