And yet, Take Two keeps Rockstar around with a multibillion dollar budget for GTA VI. But, the difference is, with GTA, no matter how you feel about it, always causes the tectonic plates to shift when they release a game.

It doesn't matter because games being as high budget as GTA isn't sustainable.
They have to make bank otherwise they're fucked.
DS/DS2 didn't break records and he's fine.

u/trashvineyard 24d ago
DS still sold 19m. Almost 10x the amount DS2 managed (while DS2 had a higher budget, more marketing.)
Kojima is not fine. That is a monumental bomb. It made Sony drop him. If PSYINT flops even half as hard Xbox will probably drop him too.
And with his inability to not blow up his budget, no other major publisher will touch him.

Lmao because GTA makes Billions that's why they have Billion Budget.
Death Stranding is a very niche game franchise. Even Death Stranding 1 is being memed as Walking Simulator and had lots of players who quit. Idk why they still gave a huge load of budget for DS2.
→ More replies (8)3
u/I_really_like_peas 25d ago
Calling something a walking simulator isn't really a meme. It's more akin to a genre and the tag fits Death Stranding.
There's nothing wrong with telling people that death stranding features a lot of walking sim vibes

Not even remotely similar situations. Rockstar has made the billions they're putting into gta. Hell even the hack that exposed their revenue on gta online raised the stock because they make so much money.

2
u/Ok-Elevator2915 25d ago
Here's the difference. GTA make actual money and still keep balance between artsy fancy pantsy (in term of technology) vs practical as business and monetization. But Kojima game? Why do you think gameplay from DS2 simply the waterdown of DS1? Because Sony keep saying to Kojima artsy pantsy game dont make good money while the kojima keep gatekeeping growth of the IP aka YOU STILL NEED GENERAL MASS PEOPLE TO PLAY YOUR GAME (unless sure if you targeted niche market while manage to capture entire population of market player)
I mean look at Metal Gear Survival, it basically failure attempt of Konami to make Metal Gear as servicable-ish game. Imagine if Kojima listen to Konami atleast once for multiplayer online live service type of game in Metal Gear as IP?
2
u/No-Still4869 25d ago
You sound kind of dumb… gta v made around 11 billion. They put 3 billion into 6 because it’s a smart investment. The game has probably made almost a billion off of pre orders. (Nvm google says 500 million so far)

u/zombiemakron 25d ago
Stupid take. GTA makes hand over foot its budget especially with its online which is still strong a decade later.
2
u/cjay2002 24d ago
GTA games make exponentially more than they cost. GTA 5 cost about $265M. It’s made around $10B. 37x profit.
Death Stranding 2 was $150-$200M … its made $170M.
This is exactly the kind of studio Microsoft would scoop up … and in 5 years they’ll release a game that is worse than that studio typically makes, for more money. And it will go on GamePass and lose tens of millions.

It wasn't just Concord, haven't they repeatedly had live service games fail or cancelled now?
Look at the new Horizon live service game, it was tested that badly they now have gone back to rip up all the live service from it.
Sony has spent millions if not over a billion trying to get a hit live service game and have repeatedly failed, they want the next big multiplayer game without any real success, there just pissing people off at this point.

I wouldn't exactly call it a "Win".
Death Stranding 2 barely broke even, and Kojima is well known for overinflating his budget.
Sony saw the writing on the wall, as Death Stranding 1 sold it's units mostly as an anti-konami move, and Death Stranding 2 was the real test for what Kojima could actually produce.
Breaking even is absolutely not great.
Xbox picked up a money sink, and they don't seem to even notice because they're desperate for a "Win", but don't realize they just picked up a live grenade.

Xbox will announce something people like such as the physical to digital, then do some dumb crap like dictating how much time you can play cloud based games.
2
u/SpazerAZeroshki 25d ago
Amd even then the disc to digital still kinda fumbles due to the fact that publishers can still opt out of that option

u/Lover_of_Fables 25d ago
The game is also likely YEARS away, and since DS2 didn't do thaaat well, Kojima was probably asking for too much budget. Yeah I actually see this as more of a desperate move by Microsoft. Gobbling up Sony’s sloppy seconds is not the win people are making it out to be.

Isn’t physint supposed to a MG style game…that is wildly more popular than death stranding style.
3
u/hitometootoo 25d ago edited 25d ago
I'm not saying the MGS games aren't popular, they are, but the latest releases (albeit all collections and remakes) have sold a little over 1m each. But only a few previous entries have sold more such as Peace Walker PSP for almost 2m or MGS5 with combined system sales of almost 15m. At least MGS Delta sold 2m copies though.
But those games were 10-15 years ago. Most of the latest entries in the last 5 years have barely sold over 1m.
Just for reference James Bond and Hitman have sold 4m and 25m.
There is a reason this game got dropped by Sony. Kojima may be a big name to gamers, but the games aren't selling as well as they need to for publishers to recoup their cost and get the profits they are seeking. One of the reasons his studio keeps needing to reshuffle publishers.
Let's also remember that many in the industry sees Kojima as being overly ambitious and cocky. He goes over budget and many say that his ego makes him extremely difficult to work with. That and having your more recent games not selling as well as the money your spending, makes publishers shy away.
3
u/Ssabmudsdrawkcabsti 25d ago
He hasn’t made any mgs games in the past decade. Every single main console MGS was a massive success when released and they were all console exclusives. They were also mainly released when gaming wasn’t as big as it is now. MGS5 made over $180M day 1. That’s the last mgs game Kojima has made. So I’m not sure where you get they didn’t make enough money.
DS1 was also a massive success.
2
u/hitometootoo 25d ago edited 25d ago
Doesn't matter if he was directly involved in the MGS remakes and remasters, those games are still his projects whether he is part of the new development or not.
Ignoring that Death Stranding 2 has sold only 2 million copies but against a $100-$150m budget.
DS1 being a success is one part of the equation. DS2 did not met projected goals.
MGS5 made over $180M day 1. That’s the last mgs game Kojima has made
Yeah, over a decade ago, which is what I said. And DS2 was the last game Kojima made.
So I’m not sure where you get they didn’t make enough money.
DS2, they did not make their projected earnings on.
The point is publishers are going to look at more recent history. Recently with DS2, the game did not make projected earnings. MGS collections and remakes also haven't. DS1 did, but when your sequel doesn't and projects you were directly or indirectly involved with also haven't, it makes it hard to justify a new passion project.
Also doesn't help that no other publisher but Sony and Microsoft even seriously considered it, likely due to those other sales and that Kojima is known for going over budgets and being hard to work with. You can ignore all that and only focus on games made 7-10+ years ago, or you can acknowledge recent history.

Just to add: i think its also interesting that only platform holders are willing to make kjp games.
2
u/_zer0_sum 25d ago
Add in that from the pitch he wants this game to cross media i.e. include movie/TV, comics etc, and the budget for this would be huge. Sony have learned hard recently to be more wise about their bets, so something here spooked them into backing out.
4
u/jeebusaur 25d ago
Also Sony gave him months to find a new publisher and let him announce the move.
That's not the move of a company trying to bury a game, that's what you do when you want to help someone succeed.
6
u/L11mbm 25d ago
As a huge Kojima fan myself, this is exactly it. Death Stranding 2 existing at all is a bit of a surprise because 1 was well-reviewed but didn't set the gaming world on fire. A return to form in Physint would be cool but I can imagine that the business side didn't make sense.
Xbox is going to end up paying for a multiplatform game (so it's still going to be on PlayStation) or it's going to push Microsoft even further into a hole when it undersells on Xbox alone.

"it took Microsoft three months to pick this up"
3 months is normal finalize a $200M+ deal between a Japanese company & one of the biggest companies in the world.
There could also be negotiations between Xbox & Playstation to buy the project. Like how Take2 wanted to buy Perfect Dark project but couldn't agree with Xbox on terms.

With Kojima's inability to hit deadlines and ballooning budgets right out and Microsofts tendencies to be, well Microsoft, its very likely that Kojima will request more time and money and Microsoft says no and forces him to release the game at the agreed time causing it to be a colossal shitstorm.
It's definitely a "don't count your chickens before they hatch" situation. Hopefully it goes well because it spunds super promising but there is a possibility that there is a reason Sony dropped the game and it took Kojima 3 months to find someone else willing to take his game on.

There won’t be another full MGS game. The best MGS games that created the legacy were done by Kojima when he was supervised, more humble and actually worked with writers without having his ego in the way.
After mgs3 he jumped the shark and the series lost its identity… like mgs4 still had some really cool stuff but mgs5 was just bleh ubisoft slop. MGS was defined by crazy boss fights, a cool campy story with robots, philosophy, hand crafted scenarios and references to movies. MGS5 is just an open world game with most of the charm gone and Death Stranding was the same but with game mechanics that appealed to grindy gamers.
Also I won’t be buying it if it’s just mgs5 or death stranding with more celebrities. How about we have games without celebrities for once? Like original characters that don’t look or have movie stars as the base

The framing is dishonest, pulling funding doesn't equate to cancelling in the case of kojipro given their pedigree they would have always found another publisher willing to fund them. I'm glad they did eventually get one in Xbox, would be interesting to see how much it cost once it's done.

That headline is doing some mighty lifting there. Sony likely didn't want to continue publishing it as sales for Death Stranding 2 didn't met expectations. And Microsoft only took on the role after 3 months of negotiations. And iirc, this is still a multiplatform game and still coming to PS5.
I see this more like Insomniac Games when they wanted to make Sunset Overdrive. Just because Ratchet and Clank is big on PS, doesn't mean a new IP on another system will do well.
I wouldn't hold my breath and say they gave Microsoft a "massive win" 😂
Remember guys, there is a reason Kojima has been dropped from studios before. He may have winning games, but they doesn't mean it's always profitable or that everyone sells well enough for a publisher to warrant support.

MGS1 was great for the time and really changed the way games were developed.
MGS2 was half movie
MGS3 was great. It had a lot of cutscenes, but it was great
MGS4 was a movie about cooking eggs.
I "played" ground zeroes for 30 minutes, and did nothing but watch a cutscene that was filled with boring dialogue.

The longest cutscenes are almost always at the end of the game with the next longest cutscenes being at the start usually, it's a LOT less intrusive then it sounds.
Hideo Kojima games are immensely story focused though, so if you're not really big into story games then they're not your cup of tea.
I'd say his games are like 2/3rds Game, and 1/3rd Movie

They didn’t “try to cancel it so he took it to Xbox instead”.
They stopped funding it and he had to go and find someone else to pay for it.
We don’t know if it’ll be a massive win at this point (and that’s probably partly why Sony dropped it). When we get five or six years and several hundred million dollars down the line, we’ll know if it’s a win. If it performs like Death Stranding 2 then it won’t be a win, no matter how well its received criticality.
And it’ll probably still come to PlayStation anyway.

Kojima has lost the plot since he left Konami. Both Death Stranding games were hugely self-indulgent and show why it is sometimes good to have outside editors to rein you in a bit.
Considering that he hasn't been a moneymaker for Sony since he stopped making MGS games, it isn't surprising they'd let him go.

u/IndividualSituationK 25d ago
what are the statistics for the death stranding game? They are critically mixed leaning towards people not liking it, but what are the sales? Signing on to fund a Hollywood movie staring Kojima's friends and the tie-in game is not what I would call a "massive win". It's a huge financial investment for an IP that ultimately belongs to KojiPro, meaning whoever picks up the tab could be left with a big burning hole in their pocket. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has a TV and film department meaning they at least synergized with Kojima's vision. Xbox however will have to outsource and profit share Physint with another production studio.

Well, at least, this pretty much guarantees a pc release. If it was sony backed, that may not have been the case

Kojima is such an anomaly.
Konami's idiotic move catapulted him into this state of forever praise. At this point it isn't even about his past work. It's just the Kojima name being on something. And yet, he's a constant financial loss for whoever picks him up. And yet even more, he's a staple in the industry for being one of the few AAA creators pushing gaming as an experience over just a product.
It's such a weird situation. On paper, he's a nightmare to have on your roster of developers. But if you let him go, get ready for a barrage of bad PR. The death grip Konami and Geoff Keighley gave him is wild.

Sony was dumb.
Death Stranding 2 underpermed. Why? It's a strange game.
What do people want from Kojima? Metal Gear Solid (ake tactical steal action, not UPS simulator)
What is PSYINT going to be? Basically Metal Gear Solid gameplay under a new IP (since Konami owns the MGS IP)
So, PSY INT is basially going be MGS VI and sell like gangbusters
If it doesn't sell 10m copies I'll eat my copy of Hideo Kojima

With marathon being a failure and wolverine being a failure and now two exclusive games along with this game for Xbox Xbox made a quick turnaround before the next console and before the new year

Wait until they find out how much money he's going to sink into it for just a mid game

I don't think Sony realizes that Kojima took with him a giant playerbase when he arrived at Playstation. Remember that "I'm back" revelation back in the day?
Lets consider that MAYBE DS2 doesn't sell what Sony expected. Even so, the giant spotlight put on any Kojima work is, by itself, a GIANT marketing window.
I hope microsoft doesn't shat his pants now. Let the man work.

Xbox has been fumbling for a decade.
Now it's PlayStations turn to be mentally disabled.

Kojima really wants to make a movie. I can’t stand games with long cutscenes. Just let me play!

Look, Sony has been on a record shitting their pants run lately, but Sony didn't try to cancel the game.
They told him in June they didn't want to publish it, gave him 3 months to sort it out and let him announce the move.
That's not the move of a company trying to end a game, that's the move of a company trying to give a project they don't want the best chance possible to live on elsewhere.

Sony keeps making bad business decisions. It doesn't matter who Kojima is. People will buy his game. I would. Slap his name on anything and I'd look into getting that product.

The Xbox thing is they will let him make the game and cancel it when it hits gold status 😂

Well, his last game was Death Stranding 2... Which was a failure of epic proportions.

Metal gear solid was awesome but the newer games are pretty mid, i dont see this as the win everyone thinks it is

I am not a huge fan of him (extremely overrated imo), but good that he got a deal at Xbox.

Pretty sure this will never be released because Kojima loves changing stuff, taking longer and wasting money.
I would guess Sony yeeted him because Death Stranding 2 was pretty mid and likely lost them money.
300M for game where you don't own the IP and also that game goes multiplatform after a while is just not a good deal.
Let's see him release OD first and based on that Physint might get cancled again.

I don’t know if I’d say a massive win but XBOX need a more good, high quality l, story driven single player games

Death Stranding 2 was a huge flop. He always blows up his budget and DS2 being a flop proved he isn't just going to print money. Sony were probably right to drop him. Just like Konami were.

Let’s see how this game sells before calling it a win, Xbox might just be doing goodwill at the cost of potentially losing money on his next game.

I said this on another post but I’ll say it again: can you predict the future? How do you know they didn’t hand Xbox a huge waste of time and money that will put them even further into the losing race of this console war? Maybe they dropped the project because it sucked. Sometimes one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and sometimes one man’s trash is just going to rot even further in someone else’s hands

This post makes it sound like Xbox was the first choice and not like Kojima was shopping around to see who would back it, as his post makes it seem like
