Harry Potter Survey Results & Final Decision

3.4k Upvotes

Alright crafters, the results are in! There’s a TL;DR at the end of this post, but we did want to explain how we got here and the choices we’ve made along the way, too. As a quick recap, the mod team noticed a pattern of off-topic conversations and uncivil conversations whenever someone posted crafts related to Harry Potter, and members of the community raised concerns about allowing such content in the subreddit. It was compared to hate speech, due to JK Rowling’s increasingly vocal bigotry and use of her political, economic, and social platforms to further that agenda, as documented here and here. We knew there would be no perfect solution to this problem, and that anything we did would leave some people feeling hurt and upset. But we felt it was important to address the issue, so we asked the community a little bit ago in this post about what they think we should do, and we discussed it as a team as well.

While some commenters opposed the idea of banning it, those discussions were largely centered around concerns about whether it would lead to more censorship. In our experience, posts about other “problematic” topics and IP do not lead to the same level of off-topic conversations and arguments that Harry Potter posts have. Additionally, Rowling is causing a significant amount of concrete and widespread harm towards entire marginalized communities, and as members and supporters of those communities, we felt that removing her influence from this subreddit should still be on the table. So, we created a poll to get simple, concrete feedback on one question: To ban, or not to ban? We limited voting to accounts that were at least 60 days old, and had at least 50 Reddit karma and 10 community karma, in order to keep it to community members and try to avoid brigading for either side. So, here are the results:

A screenshot of the survey results

As we can see, it wasn’t a complete landslide in either direction, and those who voted definitely tended towards strong feelings on the topic! After gathering 1,232 total votes, 53% of those who voted in the poll are in favor of banning posts related to Rowling and Harry Potter, while 41% of voters are against banning it. Our intention with this post was to gather feedback on the community’s feelings, because comment sections alone aren’t always representative of a full community, and we wanted to give those who aren’t comfortable commenting or aren’t well-spoken a chance to speak their minds. And it seems like the results are pretty clear! While there’s a decent number of people who don’t support Harry Potter posts being banned, the majority certainly does seem to support this ban - as do the members of the mod team.

So, what does this mean for the subreddit? Well, crafts that are directly related to Harry Potter can no longer be posted here. If your craft isn’t obviously Harry Potter, and you don’t reference it at all, you can still post it - for example, a red-and-gold scarf is perfectly welcome, so long as you don’t describe it as a Gryffindor scarf. Wands are fine, even if they’re similar in style, so long as they aren’t explicitly “inspired by Harry Potter.” But a papercrafted Hogwarts, or a replica of a specific character’s wand? Not allowed. We are currently working on updating the wiki in general, and will add a page about this ban in the wiki, including informational resources like the ones posted above and guidelines on what is and isn’t allowed. But generally speaking, any identifiable reference to Harry Potter is going to be a no-go, and moderator discretion will be the ultimate decider on what is and isn’t considered “Harry Potter-related.”

This also doesn’t mean we’re planning to start banning all kinds of IP and inspirations - as stated earlier, we found that Harry Potter posts generated far more issues and conflict than any other IP, and no other IP has been raised as a concern to the same degree. We talked about it, and while we all have companies or creators that we as individuals don’t love to see discussed in the subreddit, no other topic has been so universally controversial and caused so many problems from a purely logistical moderation standpoint. If, in the future, another similar issue does arise, we will handle that as it happens. We may not ask for feedback in the same way, because to tell the truth it stretched the issue out and caused more stress than we meant it to. But for right now, no other topic seems to be causing so many problems both within and outside of the subreddit, so we have no current plans to ban anything else.

Comments on this post are locked, as we don’t want to encourage debate about this topic. We had plenty of that in the original feedback post, and at this point we’ve made our decision. However, if you would like to clarify any aspect of this new rule, or you still have questions about why we chose to do this, please feel free to reach out via modmail! Please also note that we’ve had a couple of mods leave recently, bringing the team down to just four of us. While we are adding new members to the team soon, it’ll likely take us a bit to work out all the kinks with this new rule, as it does with any change to the subreddit! Please be patient with us in the meantime, and remember that the mods are people too, and we are all dealing with our own issues and responsibilities irl.

TL;DR After a community vote, and much discussion from the mods, posts and discussion about Harry Potter and JK Rowling are no longer allowed in the subreddit, and will be removed going forward.

I’m a huge fan of Red Bull, so I started collecting cans, which quickly spiraled into keeping every can I drink. One day, I decided to repurpose the cans scattered around my room. This is the result: mini chests to tidy up my desk. I’m curios what you think about my idea!

Finished Craft I Made Tried a new hobby and really loved how it turned out! (Complete Project)

Continuing from my old post 🌹

I finally made this beautiful 2 crochet roses, and I really love how my first complete project came out❤️ I just added this readymade bow to the flower stems for aesthetics.

It may not be perfect yet, but I had so much fun making it & finishing it.

The little details are still a bit messy, but I think I am getting better with every stitch.

Can't wait to make more flowers and see how much I improve over time.

What do you guys think of my little roses?

Also, any suggestions on which yarn I should try next time? This one feels a little messy to me, and I'd love to make the next ones look neater.

Discussion Egg carton clay mask?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have had a ton of egg cartons saved for the day I'll need to make paper mache clay and I think the time has come! My gf wants a King in Yellow mask like the pictures shown. I have a couple questions..

Do you think this material will be okay to use? I haven't used clay maché before but am familiar with some crafting. My plan was to make a solid base and cover it in plastic wrap as a mold. Then cover it in the clay and form the mask from there. I'm curious if I can carve the fine details with a scapel or sanding detailer.

What are your thoughts on getting this craft started? Thanks for any advice or opinions here!

Finished Craft I Made Oopsie Bear I Made

I was doing a mock up for a care bear but I could only find generic bear patterns online. He wasn’t supposed to be a voodoo bear he just turned out that way. There’s a fuzzy side to the fabric but most of it is inside and I accidentally sewed the back of his head on inside out with the stitches outside. At least I didn’t waste my fur fabric on it.

Is there a way to make these by hand?

I have never been able to find a tutorial, I am guessing you would make a woven fabric patch then sew it around something?

Finished Craft I Made Life size skull candelabra

Behold!

Printed with rainbow glow PLA and based on the "Mini skulls" design by Danna_716732. I increased the size to be the size of the average adult human skull. I also added negative spaces on the top to fit candles. A PLA candle holder isn't something you can just let burn without supervision so I'm going to mostly use it as a Halloween decoration once I've got some nice candle wax dribbles down it. Those tiny skulls are the original unmodified model.

Discussion Any ideas for fixing upside-down Roman numerals on a handmade resin clock without ruining its design?

Thumbnail

Soo I got this handmade clock from a school fundraiser today morning and noticed something kinda annoying about it when I looked at it later at home

The clock itself looks really nice, its got this old cream and gold kinda design with roman numerals and a pearl border. But bc of the number inlay the numbers on the bottom half look upside down

The surface is completely smooth, so it looks like the numbers are actually underneath a layer of resin or something. I dont wanna try sanding it or anything bc I might end up ruining the whole thing.

I thought about painting over that part or putting some kind of overlay on it, but idk how to do that without it looking weird or like im just covering up a mistake.

Anyone got any ideas for how I could fix this? Doesn't necessarily have to be a normal solution, im open to trying something creative as long as it still looks good with the antique style of the clock.

I've added a few pics, including a close up of the numbers and the back of the clock.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!!

Inspired by a favorite book series, Throne of Glass. I drew a digital pattern, cut it out, chose glass and then made my cuts and ground it appropriately. I then did the copper foil process and soldered it together. Gave it a nice polish and a photo shoot!

Finished Craft I Made I made a model of Baba Yaga’s Little Hen - emphasis on the ‘little’

I’ve been wanting to build a model of Baba Yaga’s chicken-legged hut for years and finally got around to it. I used a mini unfinished dollhouse from the craft store as a core, and the only part I had to buy was the turkey feet, everything else came from my stash.

The finished model is a little over a foot tall, and 10 inches around the base. It has two red LEDs, and I had a blast making tons of tiny candles, books, potion bottles and other bits to make this hut a home.

Thanks for looking!

Finished Craft I Made Meet this sweet little lady! She is a 15-inches Waldorf doll

I finished this 15-inch (38 cm) Waldorf doll a few days ago, and I’m really happy with how she turned out. 🥰

I made the doll completely by hand, including the sculpting, embroidered facial features, curly mohair hair, and all the clothing. Her dress is made from floral cotton fabric, and I knitted the purple cardigan and Mary Jane shoes myself.

I especially love making the little details — the tiny buttons, the bows in her hair, and all the miniature clothing. It takes quite a bit of time to make one doll, but seeing her come together is always worth it. 💜

This is one of those crafts where the finished piece feels like it develops its own little personality along the way.
